Well done mate, all problems are solveable with a little help from your mates!

1968 MK1 Escort 1300GT
1969 'Big Wing' MK1 Escort
1972 MK3 Cortina 1600XL
1984 Sierra XR4i
And other junk I don't like to talk about!
result, well done fella , but quite how you managed to control yourself when you went under that bridge/tunnel i shall never know
its not dead till it's buried!
T.I.T engineering. "Feel the power!"
Haha, I know! If you notice, the last car to go past before the tunnel was a member of the local constabulary so thought better of it...
Nice one dude enjoy it
MK3 Capri 2LT ZETEC
sounding good
I'm baaaaaaack!
I've been away from TS and the Mk2 for a few months while I moved into my new flat - Now that the decorating has been finished (for now - does it ever end!?) I thought I'd dig the Escort out of its new garaged home!
Once the battery had been replaced and some fuel added it fired into life straight away But as ever... it wasn't all dancing bananas.
Cylinder number 2 now doesn't fire
It did when I put the car away in September 2012... now in February 2013 it doesn't! HOW? WHY?
I've run some tests:
1) I have spark - I used an inline spark tester and swapped plugs around to rule out dodgy plugs/leads/coil pack.
2) Compression test - the tester shot up to about 170 so compression isn't the issue!
This lead to me thinking it had to be fuel - a dodgy injector perhaps - so I swapper injector number 1 and 2 around and still cylinder 2 doesn't work.
Fed up already and it has only been 2 days back on the car!
In other news... I took it to its MOT on 3 cylinders and it only failed on emissions (not a surprise, only running on 3 and needs mapping) and some lights which was down to corroded fuses.
does it feel like its on 4 cyls when you rev it? if so you probably are back to square one with an intake air leak, it its a balance issue on the t/bs
Oh shite thats bad news hope ya get It sorted....I thought old escorts didnt require an emissions test? Just visual smoke check Is It because new engine?
iirc a mk2 will still have to idle with a co level lower than 4.5%
When I drove it to MOT station it pulled well and ran what I would say is smoothly. I reckon as you later say, it must be an air leak
Yep, as Graham says, has to pass 4.5% CO2 at idle... They couldn't get the sensor to return to 0 because the garage was so polluted by the car so it failed
Yep the visual test is for older cars than matts, don't remember off hand...the computer tells me based on the reg
Back into the garage for another year then Matt? How much fuel was in the tank before you added to it?
Yep sod it! Back to work tomorrow so only weekends now! Won't make the 10 day free retest that's for sure!
Tank was empty Think there's a leak in it because there was fuel in it when I put it away!
Hi all,
Long time no post! Escort still isn't running and it's the GSXR Throttle body set up giving me grief I'm sure. So I'm considering dumping the lot and getting a set of Jenveys for it. I plan on using as much of what is there already as possible, Focus fuel reg, wiring etc.
A few questions (for now!):
1) I'm running standard Mk2 Master Cylinder (no servo) - will a Zetec on Jenveys (with short trumpets I expect) fit?
2) I already have wiring for TPS (three wires) and the wiring to the injectors - apart from a little re-routing - can all that remain the same with the Jenvey set up?
3) Will the injectors I currently have (standard Ford ones I think) fit into the Jenveys (therefore meaning I don't need to faff around too much)?
4) Will THIS Retro Ford stuff (minus the ECU and wiring) include everything I'll need?
5) Is there anything I've not considered?
Thank you all,
Matt
P.s. I know I posted this in Zetec tech section - but no one looks in there!
jenveys wont effect the wiring, the tps can go on either end, on one end the wires come out the top, put on the other end out the bottom.
i believe st170 injectors will fit as they are the same size/fitment as most normal bosch injectors.
i dont know regarding space issues, but if you can find a car with dcoes, and a std non servo master then the jenveys will fit as they are the same as webers dimentionally unless you buy short jenveys
Told you I was going to get some!
Huge thank you to Graham as ever for all his help. You can tune in again next year for the next installment!
Matt
excellent, you should be able to recoup some of your outlay by bunging your bike body setup on ebay
matt you might be better off reversing the linkage so its attached to the other body, that way the cable will enter from the front of the car, could make for a gentler smoother cable run
Sound advice there, Graham. Thank you. I shall do that. All I need now is some time and dry weather!
Yeah I am going to put the bike TB set up on ebay, it's all dumped in a box in the garage at the moment after a fit of rage removing it!
Did a rough fit today. Only had a short while outside, so only got as far as fitting the new inlet studs - but it's still more progress on the actual car than I've had in the past two years!
Finished roughly putting the Jenveys together too and built the fuel rail and inserted the injectors. It all goes to together very easily with press fittings. Just need to cut the fuel tube to bridge the gap between the two bodies.
Next things to work out (and therefore today's questions!):
1) Which inlet manifold gasket to use (I have the Weber manifold).
2) Buy a right angled joint for the fuel line so that it will clear the firewall.
3) Does it matter which way the fuel runs through the rail? I assume not as long as the regulator is on the return side as before?
no idea on the gasket,
doesnt matter which way the fuel flows through the rail. make sure the middle section tube has nice rounded ends or it will damage the o rings in the rail, a rotary styel pipe cutter like a plumber would use is best as they put a natural radius on whatever they cut, a dab of oil also makes it easier to slide into the o rings
Cheers for the info once again Graham.
I've located a gasket too... http://www.retro-ford.co.uk/shop/node/209
just had a gander matt, glad you've still got the ol girl mate and the bodies look great.all the best
Cheers, Pig! Good to hear from you. Hope you're well!
I do plan on getting it on the road... Honest!
Glad to hear she's still with you Matt,
Be good to see some pics on how its progressing
Thought it was time to dust off the keyboard and let you know the progress!
There are no pictures sadly, but the long and short of it is... It works! I would love to say I persevered and troubleshot each issue... But I didn't. A friendly chap we all know called Clint was called upon to "Finish it". Which he did.
So the car runs and has an MOT for the first time in about 5-6 years!
The trouble doesn't end though... "Oh no!" I hear you all cry!
Noticed that the battery was dead so checked the alternator and it wasn't charging. A new alternator was ordered and fitted this morning. I tested the voltage at the alternator and it read a healthy 14.something Volts at idle
I then double checked the battery and that was down at about 12.something
I chased the wiring around and found a break (my fault - I'd bodged it!) in the cable from the alternator to the starter. I bought a new length of cable and replaced the broken bodge so it had a direct link between alternator and starter. Tested it again and this time the alternator read 12.6 at idle and the batter 12.3. When held at a few more revs (no idea how many - none of my two rev counters work) it increased to 13.something at the alternator (didn't test the battery at this point as the girlfriend managed to stall it so thought it best I remove her from the car).
Anyway, my question, is there still an issue? And where have my 2 volts gone?! It may be worth noting that the battery doesn't have enough strength in it to start the car at the moment, I had been doing that using a booster pack that had been lent to me.
Over to you good people of TS!
I lied, I have a picture!
matt you need to do some volt drop checks, the 2v will be a poor or number of poor connections in the circuit, dont forget the earth path is also an important part of teh circuit see thread
http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthre...ight=volt+drop
Ah, brilliant, thank you Graham. Don't know what I'd do without you! I'll do the volt drop test next week/weekend and see what happens.
Although, would this explain why the alternator was putting out 14v when the broken cable hadn't been identified and then dropped to 12 once the circuit had been completed to the starter?
it could be because IF the battery were fairly discharged and was absorbing a lot of amps the overal system voltage would of been dragged down.
to make the before and after comparisons valid you would of needed to on both tests, check voltage at alternator and battery
Your drop after repair was only 0.3 ?
And we'll done Matt 👍

Just to update you all - the charging issues were down to the fact the battery was dead as a dodo! Took it on a few long drives and it seems good as gold now!
Loving using it again, just keep looking for excuses and places to take it!
There's a whole host of little bits that need sorting, but I can sort them in time and get it how I want it again... Starting with both headlights working!
Great to hear you still have this Matt! You must be the only person from "the good old days" who still has the same car!
