    Definitly helicoil it.

If it's that badly stripped there is a good chance that the size the hole is now will be very close if not ok to put the helicoil tap straight down it, even better of the helicoil tap has a lead on it too, just make sure you stuff the inlet very well with rag or tissue and use a good cutting compound on the tap to it doesn't clog up.

Right, well the manifold is off now and in the boot of the Mondeo ready for a trip to a machine shop. Thank you for all your replies. I would do the helicoil it myself, but I know I would mess it up and to be honest, I won't have the chance to do it. Taking Amy back to Aylesbury in a bit so it's going to a machine shop near hers to get fixed. A second stud came out the manifold when removing the other 45 and the thread doesn't look great on that one either.

Will let you all know how I get on.

Matt, many many apologies about being a twat and taking ages with the princess 4 pots. I have a fair bit of spare time at the moment, as I got made redundant, so I will definitely get out to the Escort over the next week and sort them out for you.

    Sorry again chief!

Right, well...to put it simply, it's all back together and working again. Was very impressed it started on the button too

It's in desperate need for an RR session now, idle jets are causing it to spit like a camel on part throttle and the idle is erratic to say the least. Oh and there's the pop-popping from the exhaust

    Other than that, all good

    Right, it's D-Day - almost

Got some new rad hose from one of Terry's mates - thanks Terry

Got some new locking wheel nuts from Dangerous - thanks Dave

I'll probably take it for a blast round the block later and all being well we're off to HT Racing in the morning for a rolling road session then as long as Gary is still at work then I'm going to pop and see him to get the suspension sorted out

Re: The car formally known as 'mint'

Well I'm back from HT's and I'm very impressed!

Managed to squeeze a very nice and usable 129.3bhp @ 5681rpm and 129.8lbft @ 4749rpm Aaron and Steve did a fantastic job I'm very pleased with the results. Steve even had a look at my noisy tappets

The car drives so much better and I can use part throttle without it spitting and it doesn't pop and bang on idle

Just getting out and enjoying it is the main objective at the moment! Drove down to my uncles in Haywards Heath today which was a nice motorway run, never missed a beat

I fancy an ATB, but not in the price range at the moment. I'm also starting to save for some bodywork to be done next year because it's going to need doing. Until I'm just waiting for Terry to sponsor me an engine bay resto

Here are some pics I've taken recently. The first two are from the rolling road at HT Racing and the last few are in the sun this morning before setting off to Haywards

Excellent stuff Matt Just caught up and it's coming on a right treat

What were your overall thoughts on the Gaz dampers, or have you not had a chance to get all four wheels pointing the right way yet?

Out for a drive on a sunny spring day reminds me why I got this car

Apologies Stu for the late reply, I never noticed it when the thread dropped off the first page! As for my thoughts on them - I'm very impressed! They have transformed the car both in the way it drives and the way it looks. Finally the front end is at a height I'm happy with and it feels like it's stuck to the road (apart from crappy tyres!). All the odd high speed vibrations have gone and it has been above three figures comfortably Service was spot on from Gaz and all at a very reasonable price with the TS discount

Right, on with my original reasons for digging up the thread. As some of you know, the speedo gave up a while back, I investigated getting a replacement one and could have got one from ScottB, however, found one at home - except there was a reason I wasn't using it...the back had out at some point and damaged it

I now figure that if I'm going to replace it, I may as well replace it with one which actually tells me my speed rather than the over reading that the standard Mk2 ones give when attached to a Type 9 box. Anyone recomend and aftermarket replacement? I've looked at Stack ones but they seem a little heavy on the cost side and I'm not sure they will mount well in the standard Mk2 dial cluster.

My second question: The chrome trim around the front and rear windows needs to go, one for asthetic purposes and two because it's trapping water and going rusty! My question is, are they attached via clips and would therefore leave holes needing to be filled just under each window. Or are they held in simply by the window rubber. Depending who I speak to depends what answer I get and most say it will depend on the model, mine was a L or a Pop (can't remember exactly!)

Anyway, my fingures hurt from typing now - hope it all made sense!

    Cheers for any replies guys

for an electric speedo keep an eye on ebay, the odd bargain does come up. i got a SPA digital tacho and speedo for just over 100quid, they're about 170 each new and packed with features (0-60 1/4mile timers, max, average speed etc) alternativly dig up the thread dave did about fitting a bike speedo. can be had for very little cash

if you want a stock looking one i guess you could get speedy cables to re-calibrate it, i think they do speedos aswell as tachos

Re: The car formally known as 'mint'

Matt, the car is looking 'mint'

All the chrome around the side windows does just unclip, i'm farely sure. On the rear side windows, if you just take out the glass the chrome comes out in one piece. The front side windows have a thin chrome trim which is just push fitted on to the edge of the frame, so comes of very easily. the trim which runs along the bottom of the fronts is held in with the weather seal and the quater glass seal. this obviously takes a bit more effort to remove and you nead to be careful not to damage the weather strip. While its all in bits give it all a waft with satin. Hope all that makes sense and is of use.

Thank you for the advise merp0 Anyone else got any views on this? (Not that I don't trust your advise merp, just always good to get a few people's views )

The coil isn't as close as it looks there a1topdog, but those covers seem like a good idea for not a lot of money. I can't see though (maybe I'm missing something) how all the plugs and connectors will fit the coil though with that coil condom fitted?

    Cheers, Matt

And its a lot better than it was

I agree with merpo, rears are in with the rubber, fronts with the weatherseal, just get a flat head on the back of it between the weather strip and the clip and lever the clips open a touch to get it out nicely

if you want a stock looking one i guess you could get speedy cables to re-calibrate it, i think they do speedos aswell as tachos
Dan, sorry I never saw your post before I'll keep my eye on eBay. I know a fella who's business is speedos so if it comes to it I'll just get my old one fixed and recalibrated.

    The car has been de-gayed!

Dangerous 'The Croydon Coyboy' Dave didn't just spare 5 minutes to de-gay the car - but a good few hours! Car looks much better now...if you ignore the rusty bits that are now more obvious and the missmatched paint colours! Also spent a good amount of time polishing bits of the car (I can't remember when I last polished a car ) and it now looks incredible...well the rear quarter does anyway

Massive thanks to Dave and Terry and all who jeered

Now for the important bits, some pictures!
