Just the wheels and tyres to go now. I need to get the wheels balanced/weighted as close to the spokes as possible though in the inside of the wheel because currently the calipers knock into the weights! (So they have been removed obviously! )
Be prepared for masses of weights then if you're balancing close to the centre

Re: The car formally known as 'mint'

    Wow, page 7

Well this is kind of me thinking out loud, but for ages now I've wanted/fancied putting injection/throttle bodies on the Mk2. My thinking is that it's the sort of thing that once fitted, can be interchanged with any engine. I would like a fairly simple set up...if possible...and without the cost escalating too far. I will start collecting together parts over the next few months.

I plan on basing the system around Motorbike Throttle Bodies (far cheaper than aftermarket 'proper' systems) although I know these do have some draw backs, the cost advantage outweighs them in my opinion.

My shopping list so far that I can think of for my Pinto is:

    Suzuki GSXR 750 Throttle Bodies
ECU of some sort - I may spend more on this for a good one, perhaps Emerald?
Electronic fuel pump/filter (I believe the Sierra Cosworth fuel cradle slung under the boot floor should do the trick?).
I've read that I would need a swirl pot for the tank...may just get an Ally one and be done with it

What else? In my head I can do this fairly simply, but I feel in practise it is going to be tricky

Re: The car formally known as 'mint'

I think you should spend the money on the bodywork first before it ends up as a major resto a few years down the line

But your list seems right, except i dont think you need the swirl pot as the std tank doesnt suffer too much from surge

Yep no need for the swirl pot But you will need to do a return to the tank. A fuel level sender from an rs will give you the return to the tank you need. You can pick it up Saturday

    Cheers Kev, you too

Took the car to HT's on Saturday afternoon to get Aaron to fiddle the carbs and as always he did a great job. Had a good chat with Broadmore, Jamie and Jon etc

I've decided after masses of peer pressure I should as Dave said get the bodywork sorted before it becomes a full resto job. The savings account has been started

Just a spruce up - and by that I mean new sills, rear arches, probably a new front panel...new wings too while the cars in bits I'd get the engine bay done as well...which means I may as well do the boot too.

    So not a lot

Worth the money though, think of it like an investment Its a nice shell so best to keep it maintained than let it fall apart, think of it as an expensive service on your engine, oil + filter, all new belts etc in order to prolong its life! Its all too easy to get carried away with bolt on goodies and let the bodywork go downhill to the point of it being a teabag, like mine was

Re: The car formally known as 'mint'

Well, update time. The car has sat ignored all winter - only started twice in about 4 months

I dragged it kicking and screaming to Plough Lane for its MOT last week...and it passed Straight through with only advisories for the sills.

I've decided on giving up with the engine plans, it'll get Zetec'd in a few years I reckon, I'll just put up with it being painfully slow compared to the TDCI Mondeo Until then it's body work bit by bit as and when I can afford it. So once I've got the Mondeo back from Plough Lane (it's getting a scratch in the door/rear arch fixed because some Dorris scratched it in a carpark (me )) the Mk2 will go in to get the sills on both sides done and hopefully painted blue as oposed to the stonechip black that's on there at the moment. So not really an update, more of a bump for my thread and hopefully a little small spark of inspiration to get something done on it.

Re: The car formally known as 'mint'

Right, well as ever I have changed my mind about the plans for the car a hundred times but now I've actually been proactive and done something! After a quick bid on eBay and a 2 hour drive to Nottingham to see Luz008 from here I now own this little lot:

[There should be about another 7 pictures here, but I can't make the uploader work, I'll try again with the rest on Sunday when I get back home]

2.0 Zetec, ported and polished head, fast road cams, ARP bolts, DTA E48 ECU and wiring, GSXR 750 Throttle bodies with ST170 manifold, full exhaust system, Polo radiator, coil pack, all the Retro Ford goodies, spare head etc.

Basically everything I need to pretty much drop it into the Mk2. I need to get hold of a fuel return for the tank, EFI fuel pump, filter, fuel cradle of some sort, high pressure fuel lines, expansion tank for radiator, rad hoses, I'll need to change the exhaust mountings to suit a Mk2 rather than the Mk1 the set up was in orginally, no doubt a few other niggley bits I can't remember off the top of my head. The swap probably won't take place until the end of July (when I'm off work for a few weeks ) but that gives me time to gather the other parts needed. So, if anyone has any of the above parts, do let me know!

Re: The car formally known as 'mint'

Hopefully be dropping the engine and all the other parts off at their holding pen tomorrow where they will stay until I get round to fitting it in a couple of months.

In the mean time I will be preparing to purchase other parts I need, starting with the fuel return situation. After doing some reading it would appear that the RS and Ghia Mk2 tanks have a fuel return built into them, I would assume from this that if I buy one I can simply swap my standard tank for the RS/Ghia one and that's the fuel return sorted?

    Cheers all

Your right matt except its even easier you can just change the sender and you should be able to do it with the tank in place iirc also the sports had them

Popped into Plough Lane earlier and that's exactly what they said too Dave Anyone got one?

Had another go at uploading the pictures and they seem to have worked. Nothing too exciting, but it's something to look at.

My next question, can anyone recommend me a radiator header tank (I will be running a heater so will need the heater outlet/inlet) and is it worth selling the Polo radiator I have and buying the Polo rad with the extra outlet for the header tank?

    Cheers, Matt

For the header tank mate I'd just go through all the newish Ford cars and see which one looks like it will fit well in the space you want to put it - given the size and variety of engines fitted to production cars you will have headers with any number of connections in different directions. PS don't forget the header tank has to be the highest point in the coolant system hahaha

looking good. should be fun with the zetec.

bmw rads have a built in header tank, not 100% if the inlet/outlet position is good for a zetec though.. also, i have a mk5 fiesta header tank here.

I can get pics/measurements of both if you like?

I'd be interested in the Mk5 Fiesta one... is it like this one? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-FIESTA-MK...-/320500929094

Not sure there would be anywhere at the top of the cooling system to mount it. What are other Zetec users using?

I'll have a look out for the VW and GM ones Dave

Oh, hang about, maybe it would fit up near the bulkhead looking at this one? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/fiesta-mk5-hea...item3cac26bbec
