Here you go matt, pics of my Clio header tank in the mk1...works a treat
That's great, cheers Gaz
Do the header tanks need to be a specific volume?
you can use pretty much anysize you like, ideally you want at least a litre of both air space and coolant in the tank
I've been looking into the fuel pump and filter options and with some handy searching on here and some PMs with Mr Bahr ( ) I'm pretty much decided on this BMW E30 fuel pump and two Cavalier fuel filters, one before the pump and one after.
Now my next issue is a fuel cradle, Ive had my attention brought to several models of cars which have a fuel cradle which is suitable to sling under the boot of the Mk2, but had no luck in locating one. I would obviously like a Sierra one, but they as you all know, are like hen's teeth!
While searching eBay I came across these "Motorsport Fuel Pump Cradle Bosch 044" Will this be suitable to hold the above E30 fuel pump, and if so, how would I then mount the Cavalier fuel filters?
A few questions to mull over this weekend. I've just been paid so it means I can finally start buying a few bits
Cheers all for any help
a genuine early e30 325 pump is a bosch 044!!!
as for mounting filters exhaust clamps work well either the normal u bolt type or the flat no blow type that amoungst others ashley used to clamp there 3 piece manifolds together with, or failing that a jubliee clip works well
im looking at the same issues at the mo ive already bought those filters, i im/was intending to use a capri pump i have but that pump looks decent value tbh. do you know the inlet/outlet fittings on it ?
does your polo rad not have a small outlet pipe ?
Cheers for the advice all
I don't know anything about the pump at all, I have emailed the chap selling them on eBay and he hasn't got back to me. Perhaps Graham will know? I assume it'll take 8mm fuel hose too? I literally know nothing about all this!
As for the rad I don't think it does, but it's in storage at the moment so can't check, I'll ask Luz to cast his eye over the thread to find out I don't mind buying a new radiator with the header tank inlet/outlet if it makes things easier. I'm considering a 105 Speed manifold and system too since I want to try and do this properly rather than the usual bodges
ive looked at my capri 2.8 pump, itsa lucas and has got banjos so i might use it anyway as should plumb easy. unless anyone knows why i shouldnt !
as for rad i may dummy up with the std rad and bottom cross pipe for a std look. looks like loads of room at front and im sure its up to the task.
im also thinking about the manifold (i have a ss sys) its an investment thing ( i keep repeating this when selling bits on ebay to fund it)
the polo rad had same size ports top and bottom, i made up some crazy 3 way reducers from copper because the rad, header tank, water pump and fuel rail all had different size outlets. i worked in the end though
i used a sierra fuel pump which originally had banjo fittings but i got a threaded barb adapter thing from the local hydralic hose suppliers for abuot £2, screwed this into the fuel pump then i had 8mm outlet which i clamped the fuel line onto
Cheers for all the replies
I've done some shopping and bought the following:
I got the fuel cradle from eBay and it was described as 'Used' however, I'm a little concerned about the rusty bits on it, or should I not worry about them?
I also bought two Cavalier fuel filters off eBay
I put the key next to it for a comparison of size. I was a little suprised at the size of them, but they should do the trick. May only run one though because it will fit in the cradle neatly
mount one directly below tank ? thats my thought at the mo ?
All the cradles I've ever seen have been at least that bad. If you're a proper bufty you can get the whole lot sandblasted and powercoated or painted and fit stainless nuts & bolts, well that's what I'd do anyway
Those little isolator bobbins can be bought new BTW, should be some on the 'bay.

That will probably do the trick, what are you going to mount it with or let it 'hang' inline as it exits the tank?
Cheers for the reply, I gave eBay a little searh 'little isolator bobbins' didn't return much Is there a 'proper name' for the part? I assume you mean the bit I've highlighted in the pic below?
Ta, Matt
he means the little rubber bobbins that mount that bit. £1 on ebay or £2 in halfords for mini exaust unless they are 2 big.
i was thinking of a bracket tucked away somewhere between tank exit and where the pump/filter unit will sit. you dont want it hanging loose to get ripped off !
im not sure if my capri bracket has the rubber mnts.....

Nice one thats as bad as mine is unless you pay about £250 your not going to get a mint one!! I used the filter side to hold my facet red top (theres a bracket missing to hold the filter on yours) and i took off the rusted to shit fuel pump holder and put a nice big mk6 escort filter in there with cable ties If you do have a filter from the tank before the other one in the cradle, make sure you have it secured as its an mot fail if its not secure, a cable tie on one of those cable tie bases is enough (i have some in stock somewhere if need be?! although you may use them for your fuel lines so youll end up buying a pack!?)
Just put 'bobbin mount*' into eBay, 58 matches
This is what I was thinking of, M6 threads and only 25mm thick,

Or these, M4 threads and only 15mm thick

You'll have to measure what is on yours at the mo to find out what's suitable

Ah I see! I was being a numpty - sorry Thank you for your replies exboyracer
I've bought both the above sets of bobbins because it's going to be a month or so before I get started and I don't want to be messing around with parts collecting then. I've also just bought a pack of 100 cable ties for £1.10 delivered
Dave, are these the type of cable tie bases you were thinking of? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Cable-Tie-Moun...item5192b68744
I went for the BMW fuel pump in the end for £35 off eBay and that should be arriving tomorrow hopefully so I'll be able to measure in size of fuel line I'll initially need before running the 8mm the length of the car. Anyone know a cheap place for fuel hose? I've looked on ebay and a lot of the high pressure/EFI stuff is about £6p/m. Seems a bit steep to me, but that said, I can't remember the last time I ever had to buy normal fuel hose, let alone high pressure!
Just need to decide on the header tank now too. So many to choose from, I think that may have to wait until the engine is in and I can sort out where it's going to fit best and what plumping I'm going to need.
Cheers all to the replies. I'm really excited about all this
Yes mate thats the ones, domed head stainless m6 (i think) bolts fit in them nice and flush
Also with the lines can you not run the main lines down the car in 8mm microbore (plumbers/boiler pipe) and then just have the ends in rubber, the microbores a lot cheaper to buy and im sure a lot of the injection conversions use it
you should really use copper nicol pipe.
But why??
i think its because copper work hardens and cracks .
ps. dave when you finishing the rear disc conversion how to
Im sure the pipe we use at work on gas installs is just straight copper and thats all certified stuff, my cars done with microbore and its not caught fire yet
Erm il get round to it before i sell the car il grab some pics next time i have the back wheels off as i need to paint the calipers black as they are gay and gold at the mo but at least i finally got round to painting the axle
Cheers for the advice on the clips Dave I've just bought a set.
I had considered copper pipe like you say, but as has just been highlighted, I really didn't know what to buy, hence sticking with high pressure hose. Anyone else know much on the matter?
Any ideas what else I may have forgotten to buy?
mine too is done with micro bore, although in the last install i soldered an olive to the pipe at each end to give a nice securing lip for the hose
sod it, im using m/b then as its a lot cheaper !

just make sure its agreed value and its all ok!
Yep, definately going with microbore then! What sort of length do you think I'll need? I'm thinking about 3m so that I have enough to allow for a cock up. I'll get a meter or two of hose too so that I can get the fiddly bits done, e.g. up to the throttle bodies and from the tank etc.
Fuel pump arrived on Friday, I'll wack some pictures up tonight
I bought a roll from the local plumbers' merchants, I think it was £10 - I've done two cars with it now and I've still got some left!

Ok, I'm moving closer to the install, just need to shift the Pinto so I can afford to get the engine bay sorted. While investigating the broken starter motor on the car I noticed a steering gator is split so thought I'd combat that by buying a quick rack Now, the choice is 2.4 or 2.9...Now I know I'll get you all calling me gay, but I'm thinking 2.9 since it ain't a race car and I'm a shite driver so it's a nice halfway house between go-kart handling and relaxing and non-twitchy.
Opinions please...
*hides behind the table*
A quicker rack wont make it twitchy, but they are a bit hard work for general road use ie parking so id go with a 2.9 as your not going to see the benefits or a 2.4 imo with what you use it for and a 2.9 will be x1000 better than a std one!
gayboy,2.4 and powersteering pmsl
2.4 on mine and fook me its heavy when trying to park but when do you really ever park your ford and it doesnt make it twitchy.
Hexham and District Motorclub
Thank you for your inputs fellas. I've gone for the 2.9. I ordered it last night from Rally Design and then thought in the shower this morning whether I needed anything else, group 4 steering knuckle sprung to mind. Can anyone confirm? Sooner the better as well because I can try and add one to my order to save postage costs from Rally Design. Thank you.
After a quick text to Dangerous this morning I'm sorted. Got myself the steering coupling and some poly rack mount bushes
