The car formally known as 'mint'

Thought it was about time I started a proper 'resto' thread about my car.

I'll start by saying it is jynxed and if it will go wrong...it will, both Rich and Grant can vouch for that.

It was originally a 1.1 L and after a succession of 1.3 crossflows and 2 shite Pinto's it now has a freshly build 2.1 pinto under the bonnet.

I have plans for the whole car, but at the moment it's at Terry's (PanelBasher) workshop having it's MOT repairs done (see pics below).

When I get it back I plan to drive it lots and just enjoy it.

Plans over the next few months and when funds and time allows includes Anti-dive kit for the front end, anti-tramp bars, fit rear billies and maybe some sort of new front suspension set up.

Here are my rusty MOT pics

Above is the initial hole that was an MOT failure (apart from the other few bits which were simply down to neglect )

Where the car's been living for the past couple of weeks.

New rust holes which after a few more pokes got worse

Well many weeks/months ago I promised a picture of the finished work, I even went outside at the time to take a pic (in the dark) but due to the death of my laptop, the picture never got posted... so now the laptop's back, here is that singular pic

I know, the hard work is only just starting

Next job, the 'damaged' thread on one of the billies I got...here is a pic...

The silver bit is the bit which has almost no thread...so I'll look into re-threading (I believe it's known as tapping) them tomorrow...and by saying that I mean I'll take them to the garage and leave them there

FYI .. tapping is for holes, threading is for rods bar etc. Not gonna get much thread if it's gone already. Looks like the important part below it is ok.

    Cheers for the info

Yeah the shocks themselves seem fine it's just the thread on the top of one of them.

Swapped my number plates over today for the plastic ones I took off a couple of weeks ago and fitted my new window winder today Not much but they are little jobs that need doing.

Also got a slightly better picture of the damaged thread on the billies. What do you recommend? File it down/lathe it and re-tap?

Re: The car formally known as 'mint'

Right, having given suspension a thought, I've decided to give up on the billies and go for Gaz Shocks all round.

I've managed to get hold of a set of Capri front legs to send off to Gaz, however, I'm still in need of the removable steering arms to go with them, so if you have any please let me know.

As well as this, after dad driving the Mk2 back from Wheels Day and describing its handling as "Dangerous and fookin' scary" I've also decided to turn my attention to the brakes. I'm currently thinking on of the nice shiny Wilwood set ups should do the trick, but finances won't allow that this month so will have to wait for now. Going to dig out my brake servo tomorrow as well and see if it's worth fitting that too to try and make the car stop better

Re: The car formally known as 'mint'

i wouldn't bother with a servo matt tbh mate. were the capri legs bare? or with hubs/discs etc? 2.8 capri are the common budget upgrade & plenty of people seem to run them with no probs on a road car

Re: The car formally known as 'mint'

They are just standard Capri ones from Grant's 1.6 Capri because they are getting the Gaz Shocks treatment so I think I only need the stub axles.

Right, I thought it was about time I updated this thread...

...recently my wing mirror fell off, so I fitted a new one. Simple as that. Here are the pics

    Here is the stump

So it's off with the door cards etc.

    Undo nuts...

    Two minutes later...new mirror on.

Think that's enough work for now

Re: The car formally known as 'mint'

After my last epic update, I thought I'd follow it up with another!

No pictures with this one because I couldn't be bothered to keep cleaning hands to use the camera. Besides, if you know what a Pinto head looks like there is no need for them.

To Do List at beginning of the day:
    1) Clean car for insurance photos - DONE
    2) Adjust appets to remove tapping

So I took the rocker cover off and started on the tappets...and after doing them all, none of them at all were loose, if anything they were too tight! So put them to where they should be and was pleased with the days work.

Then put the rocker cover back on and started bolting it up...until one snapped

So I now have a snapped bolt in the head and the car is oily again

Off to the motor factors in the week to get something to remove it again.

    Pissed off doesn't cover it!

I remember back in the day with my orange mk2, I tightened up the temp sender too tight and wrecked the engine getting it out.

So yeh, if you want to borrow my drill !!!

Re: The car formally known as 'mint'

    Well, time for an update

As some of you know I have recently been to Gaz Shocks for my new suspension (I have to say as well their service so far has been spot on and I would recommend them 100%). Since I dropped my Capri legs to them myself I was able to pick up the rear shocks to save waiting for them while the front legs are being built.

    Here they are:

Here are a couple of pictures of the car before I changed anything (I like a good before and after shot! )

Then it was off with the wheels, not essential I know, but makes everything easier to get to.

Then with the undoing of two nuts the old shocks were out, here is the old next to the new

The new shocks were fastened into place and looking good.

Finally the wheels were put on and the car lowered back to the ground. The car sits about half an inch higher than it used to which isn't too bad. Once I get the fronts on I'll decide if it needs lowering any more.

Only took an hour or so (with plenty of tea breaks and one phone call to Matt because I was being a tit )

Took it for a test drive after and all of a sudden the roads round here aren't as smooth as they used to be
