    MK1 S2 Granada 2.3 Coupe rescue

So all year I've been looking at Granadas thinking of getting one or preferably trade that Chevy Blazer I have in one. I was looking mostly at MK2 S2s, since I had a MK1 a few years ago and now wanted to try a MK2. Then it took a surprising turn. When I told a friend of mine I was looking for one he said he knew where one was sitting pretty much abandoned. So the next time he went by there he sent me a picture of it, and told me where it was. 20 minutes later I was staring at a '77 2.3 Coupe, that obviously hadn't been left alone for the past 20 years it had sat there. Windows were smashed, the roof had been jumped on and a thick layer of moss and spiderweb had taken the interior hostage.
Now I'm not one to shy away from an abandoned car, dilapidated as it may be. The Escort would be proof of that.
So I noted the VIN number, tracked down the owner and gave him a call. Turns out he hadn't even thought of the car for years. If I wanted it, I could have it. So I strapped it to the Blazer and hauled it home.

Now I'm having some issues with the photo sharing for some reason so if you want to have a look I hope it's not too much bother with a youtube video and a facebook album link. Anyway, here they are.

Yeah, I seem to just have them fall into my lap. Now, if I could just find a mk1 Cortina and a mk1 Fiesta.

    Re: MK1 S2 Granada 2.3 Coupe rescue

FINALLY I got some pics sorted. I've only been able to upload the latest photos so far.
For a while I've entertained the thought of using the massive L88 scoop, but finally decided to take it back off.
And as I seem to have a hard time getting a hold of headlamps I thought I should have a look if I could mount some universal square lamps in it temporarily. Still not sure here, but we'll see. I have a little pile of various freebie parts coming in next weekend so an update will be up when I get through all the boxes to see what I can do with it.

Would a pair of preface lift Mk2 Capri square headlights not be similar?

The scoop is giving me ideas of a Perana Coupe. 302, 4-speed, LSD, 40mm lower, etc.

They might be! I haven't thought of that until now.

    Re: MK1 S2 Granada 2.3 Coupe rescue

A lot has happened since my last post. I got a hold of a saloon that was abandoned in 1989, it's all shot up with a .22 and the only good part of it is the floor. Luckily for me..
Also in that load of freebie parts I got a set of GXL gauges so that will be going in when I get a hold of a connector for it.

Also got a hold of all the glass I was missing so the rear and side window has been installed. The windscreen is on the stand waiting for the rubber to show up. Got a rebuild kit for the brake calipers and a new set of wheel cylinders so the brakes are done aswell.

The new floor section is on it's way in as we speak so hopefully it will be done soon.

Alot has happened! The floor is completed, the interior back in, the windscreen is in. Although it cracked with 5cm left of the seal. Also took it to get it's inspection/MOT. I realized when I was almost there that it wouldn't pass as the rear wheelbearings were making a lot of noise. In the end it failed the inspection due to both rear bearings and 3 out of the 4 ball joints.

    Re: MK1 S2 Granada 2.3 Coupe rescue

Ok, I seem to have forgotten about this post. Well, atleast I have a monumental update for you now. To catch you all up on the remainder of 2017, 18, 19 and the first few months of 2020. I got it registered and had just over 2 years of mostly troublefree motoring. I decided to replace the engine after having driven it about for something like 8000km. And having to top up the oil a little bit too regularly. I had replaced the valvestem oil seals, but it was still drinking oil and spewing it back out the tailpipe. Now.. In the start of 2020 I had decided to fix the rust in the arches and under the wings that summer. But being my daily driver I had to look for something else to get around with while the Granny was down for repairs. After a few months of searching around, (looking for old Fords, obviously) I came across a beautiful, red MK1 Cortina 1500, with low miles and only one owner since 1966. And lets face it, me and red mk1 Fords are bound to be a match, so I bought it. And two days later I had a huge wreck in the Granada. It became a three-wheeler. It was the 12th of May, and summer had been in full startup mode for almost a month, which meant everyone had put their summer wheels on. Including me. On my way to work that morning, I got a surprise in the form of a very local overnight snowfall. And as I was about to find out, it was as slippery as a polished piece of metal coated in oil. And the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV coming the other way had the same problem. Neither of us had any say in what was about to happen.

The entire left rear suspension was missing. The wheel, brakedrum, hub, backing plate, bearing, axleshaft, and half of the parkingbrake cable was poking out of the ditch, all still assembled. I had the wreckage towed home, and immediately got on the task of getting a hold of the bodypanels it needed.

    Re: MK1 S2 Granada 2.3 Coupe rescue

Time to survey the damage. It was bad. Here's a quick list of what was damaged to the point of no return.
Rear fender, drivers door, front fender, rear wheel tub, left rear subframe mount, inner and outer sill, lower section of b-pillar, rear valence, left rear suspension arm, rear subframe, shock absorber, parkingbrake cable, left rear brake hardline, left inner cv-joint, both driversside wheels, transmission extension housing, driversside glass, and front windscreen.

I had gotten all the big parts by August, and that's when I had my vacation. Just enough time to chop it up. Along with the donor car.

Putting Humpty back together again. This is where I let the pictures talk. Because this was months of work.

And there you are, all up to date. I just started putting the interior back in today. And the MOT expires on the 30th of June. So there's my deadline..

    Wow...

I'm not sure I would have been up to that kind of rescue mission. Good work!
