Home / Garage CCTV systems - which one you got and is it any good?

    Hi all

I am moving to a new house in the next week or so and I'd like to put up some cctv cameras to cover the garage and entrances to the house.

I have been through Google etc and there are loads of systems available that claim to be good but no real user reviews with images or footage. (if there is a varies wildly between reviews)

I was wondering what people have got installed and if it is actually any good at recording images during the day and at night to a standard where you could easily recognise a face?

My biggest fear is buying and installing a system and then when it is actually need the footage is likes something from a mobile phone camera 8 years ago!

Any reviews or pointers would be appreciated

I bough a DVR and 4 analog cameras from maplin, I think this is the kit I have:
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/swann-dvr8...-cameras-a46tq

Not the greatest quality image, you could read a number plate at maybe 10m, but not at 20m. I have it set up to record only when motion is detected, and I can view it live from an app on my phone also. For the price I wasn’t expecting much, but it has far exceeded my expectations, it was a piece of piss to install, and even easier to setup:

    • Mount cameras and feed the wires back to the “box”,
    • Connect a cat5 cable from the box to my internet router.
    • Download the app & scan a QR code on the box, you can then view the cameras on your phone.

Easy as that, I was able to stream the cameras from my phone from anywhere in the world, took less than 2 hours to install and set it all up.

Is the one I was looking at

I'll do a compare of the 2 though.

Sounds really easy to install, I like easy stuff!

10m should be enough range. Will step it out once we move in. It's a cul-de-sac so someone would need to drive in regardless and I'd need to make sure I didn't have the cameras pointing into others houses.

What's the picture like at night? To me that's the important bit as that's when the scum mostly come out of their rocks!

cameras attract spiders so you need to clean the webs away frequently does not affect much in daylight but bad at night

I have this in my units. In a world of no win no fee claims. I have managed to offer the footage as proof of the fraudulent claim that I am not the only person to have found this way that workshops and garages are being targeted by scam artists who fake a fall or something similar to line their pockets with your hard earned

Are you all buying just cameras, or recording devices too ? Or just recording on the computer ?

I bought one camera ages ago...wouldnt say it was the easiest to get up and running, but never bothered with a recorder as just used the computer.
It was supposed to be able to alert via SMS or email about motion detection, but could never get either of them to work.

But ideally would like a few cameras, preferable all hard wired and POE for simplicity.

That Swann heat sensing kit looks to be pretty good ? can it offer email alerts etc ?

Although looks like cameras are regular BNC/co-ax ? Not Cat5/6 type cable ? Do the cameras also then need power supplies ?
