What you need to do is start the vehicle , then turn it off with the start/stop button and press the manual handbrake release , it should now say handbrake deactivated on the
dashboard.Remove the card from the ignition slot and you should be good to go

The way Russ has described should work as this is how we do it at work , but if this will not work you . Lift up the carpet in the boot where the spare wheel is and you will see a red cover about 100mm long pull that up and the emergency relase is under that , pull the yellow handle and it will relase the handbrake .
Once you have fitted the pads pull the handbrake handle out and press the button in the middle and it will reset the cables .

    Re: help,renault scenic handbrake

    Hello Everyone!

So here's the thing..... I have a Renault Grand Scenic 05... a while ago my mum was driving and she put the hand brake on. Then she couldn't release it!!

We called the AA and they pulled the emergency release.... now the handbrake doesn't work and the dash board says "parking brake fault".

Took it to my local ATS and they hooked it up to a green bosh diagnosis tool... but it said they couldn't reset it - the option was not available. When they called Bosh, their guys said apparently there is some sort of spacer that holds the cable in place and when the emergency release is pulled, the spacer falls out and needs to be put back in..... (not sure as i've scoured the forums and found no mention of this).

    I tried the following:

    1. Insert card key and press down brake peddle.
    2. start engine with brake peddle firmly pushed down.
    3. When engine is running, continue pressing brake peddle.
    4. With the brake peddle pressed down, pull the manual handbrake out and at the same time press
the middle square button with the red light in.
    5. Release the manual handbrake and button, however keep the brake peddle pressed down.
    6. Repeat step 4 another two times.....

Apparently this should reset the brakes but it makes no difference.... am i doing something wrong? Should i check the fuses to see if there is power going to the handbrake motor or is this pointless? Where are the fuses?

Thanks in advance for any light that can be shed on this problem!!

    Re: help,renault scenic handbrake

If the emergncy handle is pulled , there is certainly no spacer that falls out and needs to be replaced .
To reset providing there are no faults with the system turn the ignition on wich you can do without starting the engine , to do this have the drivers door open and press the lock button on the mag card .
Then put the mag card in the reader and hold the down the start button for 5 secs and the ignition will come on .
Pull out the large part of the hanbrake switch and the push in the small part without letting go of the large part and you should hear the handbrake motor operate , sometimes will need to be done twice .
You should not need to put it onto a diagnosis tool to reset unless there is a problem with the system but as you say the AA could not relase the handbrake it sounds like you have may have a problem with the system , and my advice would be to get a Renault dealer to check as my be quicker and cheaper in the long run .
If still no joy let me know how you get on as I work for Renault .

I hope you have a windback tool!! I done pads on my sisters and took me 5 hours with a swan neck pliers and g-clamp to wind the pistons back in! Motor factors only had a 90 quid set, then Bought a tool the next week for 15 quid at a markey...typical.

Never again do I want to see a senic!

My mums scenic megane has a similar problem - let the h/brake off and it goes off and says so. Put the h/b on and it goes on and says so. But in both situations after a short while a warning light comes on on the dash. This has ONLY been like this since my dad sat in the car for two hours with the heater blower on and the engine off resulting in a flat battery. Once flat it would never hold a charge so I fitted a new battery. Would the above procedure sort the warning light problem or could it be something else?

    Re: help,renault scenic handbrake

    Steve

When the battery has been changed it can bring the light on because the handbrake computer thinks its before ignition feed has been lost and will sometimes bring the warning light on when you first fit the new battery , and will need to go on a diag computer to have the fault erased .
But as you say the light is not always on and only usually comes on after the handbrake has been used I would think the fault maybe with the hanbrake lever on the dash , and have changed a couple of these for a similar fault .
Another thing to check as you have an intermiant fault would be to look under the passanger seat there is a storage tray or the cd multi changer , you need to pull the tray out and you should be able to see the main connection for the front to rear loom , it will have about 35 wires each side . Have a look for water damage wich occurs when the drain tubes get blocked under the front scuttle panel , wich then lets the water into the car and collects under the seats , and causes high resistance in the plug .
Let me know how you get on and if its possible for you to get the car on a diag machine let me know the code you get and I should be able to give you some more advice .

    Re: help,renault scenic handbrake

    Hi Ian,

Apologies for not replying sooner - i thought i would get an email when a response was posted but i didnt... will need to check the preferences!

Anyway on to my problem .... Thanks for your reply. I tried what you said and upon pulling the lever and pushing the button i didnt hear anything whir!

I have had many different people tell me different things... some of which are:

    1) if i disassemble the unit the emergency break cable goes to, i can wind the cables back again and reset.
    2) i can replace the unit which the cable from the emergency release goes to.
    3) fuses can blow and need to be checked.

Starting to worry that this is gonna be expensive!!
Can you advise on the above 3 theories especially which fuse it is i need to check?

    Thanks again

    Kind regads

    Re: help,renault scenic handbrake

As you can't get any noise out of the handbrake computer when trying to reset the system , it maybe a fault with the unit itself .
There is a fuse for the system it is in the auxliary fuseboard wich is under the passanger seat , if you pull the tray from under the seat and look inside you should see it its a 25amp fuse and it feeds the lever and the handbrake computer , if the fuse is o.k. it goes to pin H4 on the hanbrake computer to see if you are getting a feed there and to pin 6 on the lever .While you under the seat have a look for any sign of water damage in the main loom connection its a big plug with about 30 wires each side .
Let me know how you get on with that and I will go from there .

    Re: help,renault scenic handbrake

    Hey Ian.....

before i start rooting around under the seat... you said the fuse supplies to the handbrake computer and lever..... so if the red LED on the lever flashes constantly (as it does so now) to show there is a problem, presumably the fuse is ok? Is that right? or does a different fuse control the light?

Also is there any point opening up the unit that the cable goes to?

    Thanks buddy

    Re: help,renault scenic handbrake

I would say if the light is on the handle then the fuse is proably o.k. , but I will check the wiring diagram at work tommorow for you in case it gets a live from the computer to turn the light on .
But usually computers supply an earth to turn the warning lights on .

With regrad to opening the unit up there is not alot you can do with them other than change the cables if 1 has snapped , but have never had to replace cables seperatly as have never had any snap .

If you are going to pull the unit down would be worth checking if you have a feed to the handrake unit before thinking of taking it apart as could have a broken wire to the computer even though the fuse could be o.k.

    Re: help,renault scenic handbrake

Had a look at the wiring diagram , and it says the handbrake computer controls the light on the lever but my concern would as the handbrake computer talks to 4 other computers on the multiplex system then 1 of these could send a signal via the instrument to the lever .
I would still want to check the fuse before booking it into a garage to have it checked as its only a case of pulling the tray out from under the seat and no need to remove the seat its worth checking it . As if all the feeds are o.k. think your best way forward will be to goto your nearest Renault dealer to get them to check it as dont think alot of the scanner type tools can get into the system .
Let me know how you get on .

    Hey...

Progression... i managed to get the nice chap in the ATS to lift it up for me and i took a picture of the unit the release goes to....

    (see attached)...

He is willing to open it but is unsure whats inside and if it will even make a difference? Is there any point?

    Will check the fuse today...

How much does one of these units cost?

    Thanks

    Re: help,renault scenic handbrake

That unit is what contains the handbrake motor and computer and to be honest if the fault is inside it there is not much point opening it up as no parts can be changed inside it other than the handbrake cables.
The only time I have seen inside one was on the product lunch course but they only opened it up just to show what was inside it , and recommened for us to change the whole unit if there was a problem as parts where not available then to repair them and are still not now .
I am not sure of the correct price but would say it would be around £ 300 , but will get a price for you on Monday .
If you pm me your reg number I will be able to make sure to get you the correct price in case there is any difference in what year .

    Hi
I have just had rear brake pads fitted to my 04 Scenic for an MOT at the local garage - parking brake is now not working. I have taken it back 3 times when audible and dash warnings start and the red light doesn't come on the lever. They couldn't sort it out so resorted to Renault main dealer who have said I need a new motor costing £750. Is this a coincidence that the motor should go after the brake pads were fitted or could it be something they haven't pressed/pulled/twiddled/reset????!!!! I feel that I am going to be paying out for something which isn't necessary. Anyone have any thoughts. Thanks

When the rear pads where replaced it should not effect the handbrake computer as they should have disconected the cables from the calipers when they wound back the rear calipers , did the Renault garage tell you what the fault code was that there diag machine showed ?

Ian... on the back of this problem... recently i've noticed that when im driving or especially when I start the car and put my foot down, the digital displays go blank for a few seconds, the clock and the miles reset (not the actual car mileage) and there is a long beep followed by 3 more.

    Any ideas why??

    The car still runs...

The problem with the instrument panel will be with the panel itself .
Renault are aware of the problem and will supply and fit a new panel for £ 100 inc vat , wich is a good price as the panel alone costs from £ 350+ vat depending on radio type .

    Hey!

    Wow its a known problem?

So how come they want to charge to fix it... surely if its a fault with the car they should fix it for free?

Happened a few times the other day... was quite worried as it happened whilst i was driving.

Can i argue the point that if its a known problem then they should fix it for free?

You could try arguing the point but you may not get anywhere as they are already giving you a panel fitted for a £100 , wich would cost you at least £65 + vat to be fitted and programmed alone plus £ 350 +vat for the panel , I wouls say you are getting a good deal as it was .

    Re: help,renault scenic handbrake

Hi folks - sorry to be bumping an old thread here.

I've had handbrake fail on my grand scenic (2005) and the garage have told me the unit needs replacing. This is over €800 here in Ireland, I looked into getting it done up north, but its still £410 for the part alone.

I've found a breakers who say they have the part, but I'm no mechanic - is there any way I can identify that it is the correct part, and what do I actually need to get off them (motor, cables, anything else?)

    thanks.

Just a (possible) update that may be of use to some posting on this thread.
My Mum has just had a recall to do with the handbrake on her Scenic. Apparantly the local dealer is collecting the car from her tomorrow to check and re-programme the handbrake. I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, the main dealer turned up at my Mum's, took the car away, reprogrammed some software, washed and cleaned the car, returned it, all free of charge. Job Done. This wasn't the fault that she had but by reprogramming it it cured the fault she did have. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...handbrake.html

    Re: help,renault scenic handbrake

Sorry to post to an old thread but my 04 Scenic 1.9DCI (not grand) handbrake has failed this week, checked out the fuse and loom etc under the passenger seat and all seems OK. The next step I guess is to remove the unit and have a look.

I spoke to my local Renault dealer and they are quoting £504 for the part but insist that it needs calibrating by them therefore they want another £170 to fit and calibrate, does anyone know if this is straight up or are they taking the p***?

Also if I source one from the breakers will it work straight off or do I need it calibrating?

    TIA for any help
    Jim

If it is a new unit it does have to be programmed to get it to work , if you do get a 2nd hand one if possible make sure it is off a manual car if yours is a manual or auto if auto as otherwise it will not understand when you want to move away and may stay locked on , it should just work ok as only thing not possible to reprog in them is chassis number if it does need any further work by a dealer

    Re: help,renault scenic handbrake

    hello Ian from Renault,
I am fed up with my scenic 2004 1.9 diesel . I have a problem with my handbrake unit. I changed brake pads and brake discs what cost me 400£ and now they told me (renault) that I would have to change my automatic handbrake unit cost 600£. I have problem with my back right hand side brake disc is getting hot after few miles but left hand side is ok. is this is possible that only one side could be broken?
When I was at renault my battery was low do you think that battery could be reason that my hand brake was a problem? and when renault changed my discs and pads they pull an emergency liver in boot. is it true that when you use that emergency thing in boot you have to change whole unit later?
one more thing I have now a warning on my dashboard telling me to check my handbrake but after I changed battery everything was good and other mechanic check my back wheel and sad that there was a missing spring he put in back a new one and everything was ok until now. I have warning check you hand brake and my right disc is getting hot during driving. where could be a problem because I don't know any more in handbrake unit? or something else. I am afraid going to renault cos there is very expensive and 600£ for this job is far too much for me.

    Re: help,renault scenic handbrake

fitted rear brake pads yesterday, pulled the emergency release cable to release tension on brake cable also opened up control box which is pointless. Put everything back together again and followed instructions to reset handbrake which worked fantastically. anyone who are replacing brake pads you need a piston windback tool but you can make one out of a bit pipe, all you have to do is cut the pipe to leave two lugs to fit in the slots on the piston. thanks again for the information, saved a lot of time

    Re: help,renault scenic handbrake

I had a handbrake recall, August 2010 on my 04 Scenic 1.9dci (had it since new). But 2-3 months afterwards, I got the Handbrake warning light message. Had it checked out at ATS and they said the handbrake was fine, but would have to go to Renault to get the computer reset. I never bothered as £60 to turn off a light seemed a bit expensive.

During the winter, the heating went which I had fixed at an independent garage and cost £350+
Just as the warm weather came around, I found out the air-con no longer worked. Needed re-gas £50
In April this year, I've had a new windscreen - £75 excess and New battery £95
Last month the clutch went, Renault wanted £1,700 but I had it done at my trusted garage for £1050 + another £140 for a suspension arm which they'd warned me about on the previous service.

And now the handbrake, that hasn't been a problem apart from the warning light, appears not to be releasing as quick as it should when setting off on an uphill slope. On level ground or down hill it seems fine. But on say uphill junctions, I'm having to resort to using the manual leaver for fear of locking the brakes and doing damage.

I'm reluctantly going to have to call Renault on Monday, but don't trust them not to say "£600+ EBU new unit please". To me, it appears more mechanical than electrical, as with the leaver/switch it's fine.

My last 3 cars have all been Renaults, but I'm sorry to say, that this will probably be my last.

And yes, I've had the £100 new dashboard unit a year or two back.

It's very rare for the handbrake unit to fail , so you should be fine
