    Alternator help needed

I have a brand new alternator and new battery on my pintod escort and about 100 or so miles in the alternator light has come on, funnily though it is off on idle and comes on when you rev it up
Earths fuses are all good, put a new Lucas regulator in tonight and it's still the same
    Anybody have any ideas ?
    Thanks in advance

probably an internal fault with the alternator

Sounds like the field and warning light connections are reversed - warning light to D terminal, field to W !

    Re: Alternator help needed

D & W refer to Dynamo connections, if the light is coming on, then either the 12v coming from the alternator on the thin cable is missing (internal alternator fault) or the 12v from the ignition switch wiring is breaking down, when working correctly, there is 12v+ on both sides of the warning lamp, therefore it does not light up, but if the alternator is not putting the 12v+ out then there is a difference in potential across the lamp and it comes on, likewise, if above tick over the light comes on, it may be the wiring from the ignition switch is missing so again, a difference in potential so the light will come on, you will need to follow the wiring diagram to see where both side of the lamp come/go.

You better come and tell my alternator he's really a dynamo then or maybe I don't know the difference between B, D and W on the one I have.

its worth putting a meter across battery, if its up around 14v when reving then its likely an ignition feed issue as above.

    Re: Alternator help needed

Alternators also have a W-terminal but it is unused when using a internal (removable) regulator.
Back to the issue if all wiring is correct and a new regulator doesn't help, check the earthing of the alternator.
Possibly the metal fan-belt adjuster strip thingy is broken. (seen that several times on Pintos).

    Re: Alternator help needed

I assumed it was the Lucas ACR range of alternators with a plug & socket arrangement on the rear.

    Re: Alternator help needed

Wow, never seen one, all I have come across on my old Fords is Lucas 17 ACR with a plug & socket.

I did not mean to offend, must admit, the modern alternator on my Focus is nothing like a Lucas ACR range, and has 3 plugs on it, Ford's call it an "Intelligent Alternator" with regen on it !!??, live & learn, live & learn.

    Cheers.x

Funnily enough the alternator bracket had cracked but was still making a connection and have put a new one on now and it was still the same 👍
