i have read alot on this topic and it appears there are many opinions and thoughts....
My current system uses a Weaver 3-stage pump with a Peterson tank in the boot. The rocker cover is sealed with a breather coming off the block (PCV location) back to the top of the oil tank in the boot. The oil tank then has a small breather tank attached which never has a trace of oil in it.
I have considered making a change for 2 reasons. Firstly, the long length of hose adds weight and secondly, the breather line tends to partially fill up with oil (it has unavoidable low points inside the car where the condensed oil gets trapped). Once the block has a little pressure in it I am sure that pressure forces its way past the condensed oil so maybe that is not an issue providing I empty it when I can. The engine always leaks oil but I think that is more due to a few pin holes in the sump rather than it pushing out through seals. My engine builder say to keep it the way I have it (although wants me to incorporate a rocker cover breather as he says it will help oil to flow back into the block(????)) and I also noticed the Burtons catalogue shows a breather line to the main oil tank.
I have a 2L oil catch tank that I could fit under the bonnet to save weight and make inside the car neater (maybe, the new tank weight less the weight of the -10 breather hose). I have a 1-way flapper valve that i could use to try to create some block vacuum.
Does it matter which way I do it? I am not all that fussed about trying to create a vacuum (I see that possibly being the source of more issues than the 'possible' benefit it provides).
Options;
- leave 100% as is
- breather line to boot tank but incorporate a rocker cover breather with/instead of the block breather
- breather line to boot with/without rocker breather but via under bonnet breather tank to hopefully trap the oil mist (seems overkill and a double up)
- breather tank under bonnet with block and/or rocker cover breather
I know what I have used in the past has worked so am incline to leave it well alone.....
