    4drmatt's MK1 4dr

Here's some pictures of my current project.

It just needs minor work for the MOT which has just run out. I have the intention of selling it after, but we shall see.

I have made up a list of things I want sorted.

    - Sort out throttle cables
    - Set up bias pedal box so the car stops a bit better and the pedal isn't so high
    - Polybush through out as some of the bushes have perished
    - Sort out exhaust blowing at the joins
    - Stop exhaust from hitting the engine mount
    - Re-think the clutch cable as it is very very close to the exhaust manifold.

Then it's just usual MOT stuff like replacing bulbs etc. The body work isn't actually too bad so that will be left for the moment

Nothing like a sexy rear end

Some nasty holes... the inside is very rotten so I think a new bonnet is needed in the future

    just a little bubbling

Bloody scrathes from me parking under a low tree

Hopefully this is only on the surface

Unsure of what to do here... will I have to bare metal it? I don't have a garage to work in so the less work the better

The door bottom look manky and it is

Exhaust very close the engine mount... hmm...

    Clutch cable dilema

    My engine bay almost done

I'd like to thank my dad for all the help he's done on the car so far , which if I'm honest is more than what I've done

I shall be doing it all from now though

I don't have dry storage. I wouldn't want to get it mint only for it to be ruined by the rain.

If I could find some local storage, or ideally a small workshop to rent then I'd definately keep it. I'd use it often but at least it could be somewhere dry for when I'm not using it.

Engine is a 202 block, standard except for the twin 40's and manifold.

Was checking the car over for the MOT and decided to have a little poke around with a srewdriver... oops...

it's well rotted, but hopefully it shouldn't be too hard to sort out

will order what I need tonight and try and sort it the weekend if the metal gets delivered and I can fix the welder

i used 2 have a nice nordic blue 2dr mk2 that i had to sell cos i lost my storage and was gutted when it went and still regret it now even though the 4dr ive got is in mint condition compared to the 2dr. iam just going to get a car cover for mine for the winter but it will still get used most weekends so shouldnt rot away.

Looks a good project If it's stuck outside all the time, do the best you can for it with a wash and a wax every now and then to keep the worst of the weather off.

Not sure about the Escort, but the Capri's got drain holes in the sills and scuttle that need a good poking out to keep clear so that any water in there can get out.

The bay looks nice and tidy though

Out for a drive on a sunny spring day reminds me why I got this car

I wouldn't know, sorry. I have only ever driven this car with the twin 40's on it, so haven't got anything to compare it to

Thank you Pictures can be very deceiving sometimes... What you can't really see is that there are 3 strut tops both sides, which although they are ok for now, will need sorting in the future. I also need to sort out the wiring properly as it's a bit of a mess (hidden by the carbs and battery at the moment) and possibly move the battery to the boot.

Now weather is getting better my attitude towards keeping it is changing, so we will see. I would still like to find some permanent storage though.

    Re: 4drmatt's MK1 4dr

Not much of an update really... left it alone for a month or so... Car is now fully polybushed (apart from two bushes waiting go on) and I have fitted some 2.8i struts. I will be ordering some wilwood midilite calipers over the weekend to hopefully fit next weekend.

I have all the repair sections I need and my dad's fixed the mig welder, so I really have no excuse to get this shed on the road now

    Re: 4drmatt's MK1 4dr

bit of an update... not all my work but still progress!

last week i fitted my brakes

then tried my capri wheels for size (ps they are now black)

unfortunately they need spacers and don't have tyres so instead of spacers i got some washers and wacked some chav specials on...

then today I came home to find find my dad had done this he had to work around the previous owners repairs and the welder had a problem feeding the wire so not the tidiest of jobs (by his own admition) but's it's solid and I'm very grateful

Got this through the post today. Very surprised as i only ordered it at 2pm yesterday from AC Motorsport Services on eBay

    Comes complete with all instructions...

No before pics, but here's the new ride height at the rear...

Just need to get the wheels sorted with 175/50/13's and the front lowered a bit

    Re: 4drmatt's MK1 4dr

Little update. I was going to get someone else to finish the car but then I thought I'd pull my finger out and get it done... how hard could that be? Right now the only thing holding me back is money... anyway...

1st off, a question. are these lowering blocks fitted correctly? I'm not 100% sure

I am moving the battery to the boot as I am fed up of it getting in the way. Also the "new" battery doesn't fit in the engine bay Sorry, no pic of my empty engine bay

My dad made me a removable battery tray which hooks into where the strap for the spare wheel used to go. I like it lots

Whilst I am waiting until postie comes the only job I could get on with (apart from the electrics) was sorting out some of the rust. I hate curiosity lol. I found these lurking on the drivers side at the front of the floor and half way along the sill once I had removed all the underseal

this first one has been plated over from the inside so this outer bit is just sitting there rotting away.

same story here, but opposite plated on the outside but now the plate is rotting through i wish people would repair things properly

If I could weld and we had a working welder it wouldn't be a problem... hmm might buy one, but I'll have to wait a month until I can afford one

how long does it take to learn to weld a car up to mot standard?

    Re: 4drmatt's MK1 4dr

Well... I have just ordered a welder... Nothing special, just a cheap Sealey/Siegen 130 Amp one... They have a few bad reveiws, but then quite a few saying for the money(£130) they are very good. I'm not too fussed if it's shit, as long as it gets the job done in the end I'll be happy. I can always sell it when I'm done.

Now I've just got to learn how to weld... I've been reading a lot on http://www.mig-welding.co.uk so hopefully can get cracking as soon as the welder turns up. Expect an update at the weekend

    Re: 4drmatt's MK1 4dr

Good luck with the welding Matt, if I can offer you my non-expert but learned over the 1st 6 months of welding tips, which I keep forgetting, then learning again and again.....

1: all metal to be welded should be super clean
2: remove any black panel paint before welding, as it save a heap of time and aggro to remove it later.
3: Thin metal must be really close together, any gaps you will burn holes. Use self tappers, rivets clamps, gravity or force to get panels/edges close together
4: you need to see what you are welding, lots of light and a good angle really helps
5: Keep a bit of scrap steel handy and test weld with each change in amps, little changes in wire speed make all the difference to ease of welding
6: pulse weld thin steel to start with, as little as 0.5cm at a time, until you get a feel for it
7: Weld from thick to thin, if you have a choice
8: practice the wiggle to do seam welds, take time
9: Flap wheels and a Carbide burr can help disguise even the crappiest welding

All the other proper rules apply, this is just what keeps coming back to haunt me when I don't do it. Have fun.

been a bit lazy with this thread, but not with the car.

short version of the long story...

took car for mot today. failed on rear brakes and handbrake.

so glad that's all it failed on. gunna get a mate to sort that where he works.

front tyres are shagged though after ten miles, might have to do some arch rolling or fit rubber bands...

    Re: 4drmatt's MK1 4dr

well it did pass it's mot, made it to ford fair and back (overheated in the car park though )

here's how it is looking now, apart from a 10mm spacer being removed from the front wheels.

still gets bloody hot, but the temp gauge stays low. new sender, tested gauge and it works fine. it's as if the water isn't circulating properly, but has new water pump, thermostat and rad was new not long ago

oil pressure started dropping when I came onto the drive last night though. hopefully nothing serious

can't drive it anyway as got some loose wheel studs and no rear brakes

lowered the car now... not quite as low as i would like. was expecting the front to sit lower (-2" springs on capri struts so about -3" or a bit less in total)

would like it a bit lower but this will do for now. will be getting 175/50/13's soon, but everywhere I have tried is either out of stock or wanting £140 a pair then fitting on top! here's a pic of how it sits now.

thanks russ. it needs a clean and a polish. I think the last time I cleaned it was before christmas. luckily blue is a very forgiving colour.

if it does go lower it won't be for a while as the pennies need to be spent elsewhere first.

Well, it's daily duties are now over. Got fed up with it being unreliable/slow/rusty/leaky etc. So have bought a replacement car so I can tackle this. Not sure if I am going to sell, break, or fix. watch this space.

    Re: 4drmatt's MK1 4dr

little bit of progress... bought a new engine! it's a nissan sr20de! i think people get too caught up in fitting 'ford' engines, and this seems like an affordable option, so why not? 140hp as standard, already rwd so no pissing about on that front. The sump, although front bowl, is pretty shallow so shouldn't be too many problems. i have carefully been studying aussie forums and asking questions specifically about sr20 conversions as they are popular there.

sorry about the crap pics... too sunny LOL

ps. don't go to pick up an engine in a 5 series saloon

I would've been using the nissan sr20det gearbox... in fact I still have it here, but sold the engine as I didn't want to put an aftermarket tunnel in and an auto was too small. now got a crossflow in it.
