    opinions on duratec crank

Hi all, just wondering what you think on this duratec crank. Bought the engine with a knocking bottom end. turns out number 1 conrod gave up put two holes in the block and shattered the bearing carrier. . the crank may be salvageable what do you think and is it worth it ? given the price of complete engines as opposed to a regrind new shells etc and a crank that will be pretty well ground if at all possible on a performance build. on a plus note i only paid £50 for the whole engine including ancillaries surprisingly the head is untouched.

As you say a s/hand un-damaged std. crank, even adding new shells is liable to be cheaper! Damage looks like a lot of material needs to be removed so are undersized shells available - I suppose undergrind, metal spray and re-grind to stock is an option but would be spendy!

It's not a lost case i bought the engine initially for fitting up and measuring etc and took a gamble it may have been a regrind etc before finding out the extent of the damage. the block is still good for mounting. after that it can go in scrap bin.

here are some pics for amusement

It's a waste of time and money spending on that bottom end when perfectly good Duratec engines are out there. The Scrap yards are full of them.

With that sort of damage the crank will most likely be bent.

Thanks guys, I think you have confirmed my thoughts. What made me laugh is that the holes in the block were on cylinder 2 and it cracked the sump. it must have gone with a real bang.

    opinions on duratec crank

I assume that is a bike engine. What revs was it at ? Even worse it was between someone's legs 😖
