Escort boot tension rods and acid dipping?

Has anyone had any experience with their boot hinge tension rods going weak?? I striped my shell and didn't touch them, I sent it off to the acid dippers more than a year ago, then I've come to fit my boot lid and there's just no tension in them.
Ive checked there still attached and I'm assuming the dippers had no reason to remove but I'm thinking, has the acid wreaked the "spring" in the rods. I'm going to call the dippers tomorrow to ask if they've ever experienced anything like this, very strange.

i wouldnt of though the acid could effect them, its not going to penetrate spring steel, i woudl of thought its that they are simply fitted wrong so dont have any preload

On my mk1 you can adjust the tension by loosening a bolt on each side, I slackened mine off a bit for glass fibre boot lid.
    Just need tension re-set?

    Hi.
I had exactly the same with mine. Don't know why they've done it but they have definitely lost their spring!
I tried re twisting them but as soon as I pushed down the hinge they twisted right back!
The she'll does go through an oven to dry it out after rinsing but I wouldn't of thought it was hot enough to make this happen.

It is strange as they haven't been removed, so exactly how I left them, and they are under slight tension but no real force behind them to hold the boot up.
Good to know somebody else had the same problem, will delve a little deeper and let you know Dave.

Just got back from my body shop guy and he said it always happens with dipped cars, I also telephoned the dippers and they'd never come across it or been informed but they will inform future customers.

The shells are baked in a hot oven so I can only imagine thats where the damage is coming from, I'm going to try and turn the rod a 360 but its not easy.

Tried that one. I put it in a vice and twisted it right round but as soon as I put it back on and pushed the hinge down it lost it's tension.
Need to get it heat treated and tempered again.
Or just find another pair. I need some! Anybody?

I had my shell done at Envirostrip and exactly the same thing has happened. Weak springs, but they use the heat process to incinerate off all the old paint and filler. Haven’t looked at adjusting them yet!

Re: Escort boot tension rods and acid dipping?

    Hi all,
I found this old thread, I have the same issue : tension rods lost their tension after heat treatment of the shell to remove the paint...
I was wondering if any of you found a solution to put back the tension, or if I just need to get a new pair.

    Thank you,
    Cheers,
    Alan
