    Sierra T5 gearbox overhaul

Need to do a rebuild on my Sierra T5 box, who in the UK can supply a full overhaul kit ie bearings/ seals/ shims / baulk rings and poss 4th gear synchro hub ( got a problem selecting 4th when cold ) there are some basic kits from the likes of Burton, the Gearbox man nothing in stock only option I've found is from the US. So any help would be appreciated.

Just a bit of info neither GEARS or CTS will supply parts as all their stock is used for their own builds.

Are you going to cut the rear bearing off to get the box apart or do you have a decent 5th gear puller? Difficult job even with the proper tools!

Would appear to the best to cut the bearing to save destroying 5th gear when you pull them

    Re: Sierra T5 gearbox overhaul

I had a proper puller made that gets 5th gear off without breaking it - I didn't want to be cutting the rear bearing shell in case the bearing was OK as fitting a new bearing almost certainly means re-shimming the main-shaft. It's not a problem if doing a complete overhaul though.

It was a bit of an oversight on Borg-Warner's/Cosworth's part.

    Re: Sierra T5 gearbox overhaul

The main issue I have is selection of 4th gear, it's just solid when cold but does get better once warmed up. But certainly not right. Apart from that the box is ok. Thought while I'm in there May aswell do an overhall because the milage on the box or history is unknown.

    Re: Sierra T5 gearbox overhaul

Could be expensive if you need a replacement main drive gear and synchroniser assembly! Are you using original ATF oil spec'd by Ford?
Could be block bars - last box I did had broken block bar ends on 4th gear side.
Will be a good chance to check end-float while box is apart.
    What BHP you running?

    Re: Sierra T5 gearbox overhaul

Oil that was in the box looked like ATF, it's only at 280 bhp so nothing ridiculous. But don't know how it's been treated in its previous life. Now fitted in a mk1 cortina so it's not an easy task to remove. ..That's life!

    Re: Sierra T5 gearbox overhaul

I have similar shit issues going into second, very hard when cold (especially downshifting).

I haven't had a T5 apart, can you check synchros by just popping off the lid of the gearbox?

I am running close to 300 whp and over 400 Nm so really above the T5 limits long term but still would like to figure out what the issues are before I decide what to do.
