Capri Mk2 2.0 Pinto springs rate for track days

    Hello

I'm preparing my Capri Mk2 -77 2.0 Pinto for track days, the plan was also use the car little on the road.

I plan make stronger engine later. I have order GAZ shock, Super Flex bushings, vented disc, Ferodo DS2500 pads, etc. I plan run Yokohama ADVAN NEOVA® AD08R 205/50R15" to start with, on 7"x15" RS 4 spoke replica wheel.
(If you know of use RS wheel in good condition please tell me)

I was lucky and got a ride in Gustav “therealpinto” turbo Capri with 230-250 hp on the race track. I like it very much, it was not for stiff for my taste, and it could be even stiffer. (My Group3 Pantera is much stiffer).

He had 225lb front springs and 200lb at rear (coilovers front and rear with Sierra rear end).
Gustav “therealpinto” turbo Capri weight about 30 kg more at front than my Capri. (Turbo, manifold, intercooler, big brakes)

The problem I have is to choose springs; I know I want lower 40 mm (1,5"). I will use original struts.
The question is should I go for 230lb custom made front springs or is it too stiff, should I go for little softer, if so how soft?

How stiff can I use on the road?

The stiffest I have found not custom made is 190lb, is 190lb to soft on the race track?

Must I have two set springs, one on track one on road…?

    Please I need help...

    Thanks
    Anders from Sweden

190 would be very soft on a track in a pinto powered escort let alone a heavier capri, 230 would be firm on the road but not overly so

I would purchase from www.dfaulknersprings.com based close to Goodwood down on the west sussex coast here in UK.

You will need to work out the free (open) length & poundage. Do not go too low on standard length struts ( maybe get GAZ to build the new struts for a 2" lowered car/ shorter bodies)

on a pinto engined escort race/track day car we would use minimum 350 lb. running a standard anti roll bar. If you can get a 2.8 inj front roll bar (much fatter) with mounting brackets etc, i think you would get away with 300 lb

This poundage may sound high to you, but believe me, we are now running 550 on toyo or kumho in race trim.

not surprised on those spring rates i know of current and past escorts which rain spring rates of 600lb all be it on slicks, my bmw 2002 rain 750lb although that used a thinner roll bar than most escorts

I could surely go higher in spring rates but the track we run on has some uneven surfaces and is also pretty slow (due to safety constraints), top speeds around 140-150 km/h and rather slow turns. But I also have a rather stiff blade ARB, forgot to speak about that with Anders.

Unfortunately 2.8i or Laser ARBs are hard to find here (never sold in Sweden). I was planning twin front ARBs before I fitted the blad ARB, that could be an option.

We fit 250lb on Ford Anglia (fast road) slightly modified running 185/60/13 road tyres.

Please don't waste your money on anything less than 300/350.

The capri will roll/weight transfer into any corners and pick up an inside rear wheel.

On my track and some road (a bit teeth- shakin', but noe too much, really) I use 450 - 500 lbs up front, but with a heavy weight engine. With a pinto, I'd guess 350 will be good.

You are better off converting your struts to coil- over; you can experiment with any springrate and length, then- for little money....
