    Clutch release pivot problem

    Hi all,

Should there be some kind of spacer behind this clutch release pivot from a 68' Cortina Mk2 3-rail gearbox. This one is very loose and flapping around freely.
The pin it fits on is knocked into the bellhousing so that its about flush with the end of the hole it goes into, not sure if it needs knocking in further or something is missing.

    Okay thanks for confirming.

The only reason why we are wondering is; sometimes when you press the clutch down, as soon as you start to put pressure on the pedal you hear a loud knocking noise which you can also feel vibrating through the pedal.
The release bearing is new old stock and feels perfectly okay. The clutch appears to be in good condition with no damaged fins on the pressure plate.

Clutch disc bent? Easily done when installing your engine (if you install engine and gearbox separately) if you "hang" the engine on the gearbox nose with too much misalignment.

Once the load goes onto the pivot it shouldn't move other than slightly pivot on its contact face with the bellhousing.

We just discovered we have quite a lot of crankshaft end float, we can pull the crank back and forth. Could be the source of the noise.

How much do you think it moves? Certainly sounds like that could be your problem.

odds are someone has rebuilt it at some stage and put thrust washers wrong way round. pintos/xflow normally have about 0.0045" end float, something you cant feel but have to measure with a dti

Potentially yes. It's a 1600 xflow, movement is say 1mm or so, enough to visibly notice movement.

so about 10 times the acceptable amount, either the thrusts are in wrong, or they and probably the crank are badly worn, sounds like you need to get it checked out, if your lucky you wont need a new crank and block, keep using it and you will
