I thought they were a conversion of a standard head with the cam bearing towers milled off so no real improvment

correct, it donst fix the pintos basic problem in that the it isnt great in the air flow dept, and whilst bucket tappets are mechanically nicer, the std finger follower arrangement give greater valve acceleration which the pinto really needs

Dave Brookes did his own version of the Piper Twin Cam one that was suppose to be far superior to their design. It was fitted to Dave's DB4 Rear wheel drive Escort Rally Car in the early nineties mated on a 2.3 Pinto block and head. It had 6R4 Cam profiles fitted at the time according to him.

Just to add on the Piper Pinto Twin cam conversion the exhaust cam is driven anti clockwise. I remember seeing these advertised in either Hot Car or CCC magazines along with a X flow integral steel rocker assembly back in the late 70's to early 80's.
