something oily! if an engine will stand for a long while before its going to be started/used i use graphogen
Graham - when I was rebuilding old engines quite a lot ( circa 1983 😄 I used to use the STP oil treatment stuff as it was like treacle. No idea if still available but always wondered if it's good/ bad for the job. Any thoughts?

i think most important is actually to prime the thing properly, unless an engine is going to be dry sumped, when its complete but before the sump goes on, i hold a jug of oil upto the pickup and spin the oil pump drive with a drill, it fills the filter, galleries and you can physically see the spray bar spraying, i do this with an oil pressure gauge connected, with a std oil pump on cold 20/50 you will see 60psi on a battery drill, 70 or more if its an uprated pump
the whole point of assembly lube is to protect the moving parts until pressurized oil is available when the engine is started, so i dont see an issue even if any were washed away because priming will give instant oil pressure once its started
no need if you oiled it when you built it, the most important thing if it is going to sit around for any amount of time anywhere other than a warm dry room is to regularly turn the crank over a turn or so
