    Hiya P,heads
Anybody used the Melling M86CHV oil pump on a Pinto
A high volumne oil pump as different to a high pressue oil pump
    whats needed ?
    More pressure or more volumne.
Or stick with a standard Burtons ?

i havnt, but you need nothing more special than a standard oil pump.

most replacements are not very good and wear out relatively quickly, where possible for a fairly standard engine i prefer to use an original ford pump thats still in good condition.

but from what i read you wont go far wrong with this one

Remember that pumps don't put out pressure they only put out volume.

A higher volume pump will always produce more pressure if nothing else is changed as it is trying to squeeze more oil through the same hole (galleries). Low revs, pumping low volume = low pressure. High revs, pumping more volume = high pressure.

The old thinking used to be 10psi per 1000rpm but these days 60psi hot seems to be considered fine.

There are ways to get more pressure from a standard Pinto pump by shimming some bits inside. This prevents the by-pass function coming in too early. There are threads on this.

I have not used the pump you mentioned.

The Melling M86CHV does not fit the European pinto engines. I bought one, tried it, doesn't fit!!

They only do a standard volume pump that fits our pinto.

Google M86CHV and go to images then compare it with the standard pump...completely different!!

If you still don't believe my I'll very happily sell you the one I have in my garage.

But seriously don't waste your money.

My 2 cents: if you have an oilcooler fitted, use a high capacity pump.
