    clio 1.6 auto gearbox probs

i just got the misses a renault clio 1999 rxe auto 1.6 44000miles
but has lost all forward gears and reverse works fine. i did a search and found this to be a common problems on the clio auto boxes and the problem is likely to be the Forward internal clutch plates.
does anyone know where i can get these parts from
    cheers

The problem is usally the E1 clutch seal as well as the acutal clutch packs , as the E1 clutch pack controls the forward gears and E2 does reverse you still have reverse gear , most gearbox specialists should be able to recon the box for you and fit modified bits so the fault does not reoccur . You will struggle to get the bits from Renault because most main dealers will not rebuild the boxes because it works out cheaper to fit an exchange box , all the Renault exchange boxes in England are rebuilt by a company called Autotrans in swindon .
I do know someone who rebuilds them depending on where abouts you are in the country they maybe able to help .

Sounds like you have the same fault as above if you have no forward gears will be the seal for the E1 clutch pack , I have Autotrans number at work as they are an approved repaier for Renault I will get you the number tmw .

Re: clio 1.6 auto gearbox probs

I ended up up buying a second hand box with 33000miles on it. Was a bitch to fit but worked fine, i looked into buying new seals for it but was advised it was a tricky job to do if you havnt done one before.
I was getting quotes between £700-900 for a recon box so oppted for a £300 box from the breakers.

Re: clio 1.6 auto gearbox probs

That could be low fluid causing that. And as far as i know only renault can check fluid levels properly with a machine. Or do what i did once i fitted the new box and that was at the bottom of the gear box there is a drain plug. When you look at it there is a large nut with a smaller nut inside it, the outer one is to drain the fluid and the iner one is a level plug. Remove the iner plug and pour fluid in from the plug at the top (hex nut ) until fluid stops coming out of the bottom, start engine sellect and run through all gears and repeat. This worked fine for me but the only real way of checking for the exact amount is like i said through a machine renault use or maybe a gearbox specialist.

Re: clio 1.6 auto gearbox probs

Just to update you this is the story of my car so far

I have just brought my 2000 Renault Lutecia (Clio Mk2) 1.6 Automatic (3 speed plus overdrive?) Reg: DZZ956 Chassis number: VF1BB0D0AY0600573
but it will only drive in reverse gear.

When you start it up and move it from Park to Reverse it changes into gear positively and when you go from Reverse to Neutral it changes fine.

When you go from Neutral to Drive (and any of the forward gears) the engine note changes and it runs free as if it is not going through the gear box and has no load on it.

This problem developed suddenly and with no symptoms before it stopped driving. It was going fine with NO drive issues the last time it drove normally.

The previous owner came home in it and parked the car in the garage (forward) as normal. The next time they drove it (later that day I believe) they reversed it out of the garage as per normal but when they selected Drive there was nothing there.

I was told it could be the forward drive clutch in the box gone but it seems unlikely to me that the gearbox would develop a terminal mechanical fault given it was going fine when parked up but I am open to any suggestions as to what it could be.

I have had a look at my car today and I unplugged the Gearbox ECU and it moved forward in drive (I think they call it safe mode and only in 3rd gear) so I was now thinking it is the gearbox ECU but after reading these comments I am picking it is the gearbox itself.

Does anyone have any ideas as to where and how to look for a exact answer as even the service agent said the fault codes (if plugged into the computer) aren't exact.

If I have to take the gearbox out, by looking at the car does the box have to come out the top opposed to dropping the box out the bottom?

Many thanks for any comments or suggestions.

I know the hydraulic valves pack up in the Megane Savvi, I have changed quite a few of them and a little awkward but no too bad... would imagine the Clio is the same box too can't remember from memory.

Don't know if it helps, just a passing thought reading through the page..

Re: clio 1.6 auto gearbox probs

Recently I was driving home in my T reg Clio RT 1.4 Auto, and just as I came off the sliproad, the forward drive just went completely, and fortunately I was heading downhill (and so was able to coast into a nearby parking spot).

Nothing appeared to have overheated, but any kind of forward movement was like you were in neutral... but it did reverse as normal. I had the AA out to assist, and the guy couldn't/didn't know where to check the gearbox fluid level - as that was his first thought, that the level was down... other than that, he said he felt it would need specialist attention as an automatic gearbox for a clio is not a cheap or easy fix.

So he towed the car home, and I was able to reverse it back onto our drive - but it's just sat there looking quite sad now. The value of the car itself is minimal, so any expensive repair work probably wouldn't be worthwhile. I can't drive it anywhere currently because of the forward issue.

Is it possible (and not too difficult) to be able to check the gearbox fluid level - as someone who's not that great under the bonnet?

I've seen online a few mentions of a forward internal clutch that could be the issue for others who had this problem... is there a ballpark figure for how much this could be to fix if it is that?

low fluid level would not cause a sudden lack of forward drive, but ok reverse.
