    Real World Experience

Built a YB NA engine and 4 spd Type E box. As the car is for hill climbing I wanted to keep the weight down so got an HD alloy maincase and straight cut synchro HD Quaife gearset, all assembled by a reputable builder. Got 170BHP/160nm torque at the wheels. All good so far. First runs up the hill took it easy as engine is still bedding in. Reset the rev limiter to 7800. Away I go first full noise run and couldnt get 2nd gear at all. By the time I get it to go into gear Ive lost my roadspeed and the engine is off power band.

Whats going on? Alloy case flexing? Synchro gears cant handle the revs?

    All advice appreciated

simply 7800 rpm is probably too much for the syncros to work properly, or it may be your gear oil is too thick, why not ask quaife what they think

Yeah, was going to send them an email too see if I can convert the QKE2Z GEARSET to dog engagement.Odds on the mainshaft will be thicker but worth a shot. A mate did say try a lighter oil(using 75W/90) and check the selector forks are all good. Tx for the reply

Don't expect any help from Quaife over your problem, all's that they'll want to do is sell you a Dog Box. I very much doubt it's your main case flexing with the power your engine's producing. You could have a cracked syncro or one of poor quality. Also if you are very fast at changing gear, especially if you have a quickshift fitted you could literally be beating the syncromesh and not allowing it to do it's job properly.

Try using a good quality synthetic 75/90 oil such as Fuchs SRG 5 or Titan Race to see if it helps your cause.

    Re: Real World Experience

Was using a standard Escort box with original NA build and had no issues getting gears, a lot less power though but same revs. Going to try a different oil to the Penrite 75W-90 and see what happens. Do gearboxes need a bedding in process like an engine or if they are built properly they should just work?
