Re: budget economy pinto with some power, how to rebuild a pinto named Dave

Dave with the pistons out the top of the block i take it you then do the piston to valve clearances using a used head gasket and bluetac lol. Is there any rule of thumb on the protruding piston height for a fast road engine ? i take it the cam lift has a lot to do with this as i think im going to use a RL 21 ? im just getting some bits together for a 2ltr for a freind, this one will be going to Perth down under so it has to be right 1st time. Will be posting up the strip down and build up soon.

silly question, but did you ever put this on the rollers in the ends to check the fueling and power?

dont think it was, it cant of been that far out though as years later its still going strong.

with reference to valve piston clearance on pintos, unless you have a massively skimmed head proud pistons and a mental cam theres never an issue, loads of ways to check it, old gasket and plastoscene on top of the pistons, another method i use is to simply see how much further i can lever the valve open with the engine at tdc, its worth checking several degrees either side of tdc, typically clearance seems tightest about 5 degrees ATDC

So what was the piston heights in the end , ive got .24 down the bore on every one so far and a ring gap on both top and middle ring at 30 thou ,

its a long while since i built this engine now, but i do remember i used a felpro head gasket so i would of most likely gone for 10 thou out the block

Re: budget economy pinto, 32.6 mpg on sidedrafts, a pinto named dave

To be honest I have rarely driven my Escort over the last 12 months or so, to make up for this I decided to drive to John O'groats last weekend just for the Hell of it.
1100 miles there and back in less than 48 hours and that was dawdling.
The engine is brill! It just pulls and pulls, you don't need gears. I reckon you can just about be tootling at 30mph in 5th and boot it all the way up to 130mph without bothering to change gears. Not the best way to treat an engine but it will do it. (Not that I have ever done 130)
It will sit for hours at 90mph on the motorway if you want it to and it is very easy to potter around town in traffic too.
Just wanted to say how much I like the engine.

I have only ever run it on V-power fuel. Up until now it has been V-power petrol too.

I did only put a fivers worth of deisel in, that was when I realised.
I then went on to brim the tank with the proper stuff. It got me home but it will have to come out.

I once put contaminated fuel in a Capri, was over a year before it ran right again, I will take it out.
It is so easy to do on an Escort it is a no brainer really (same as putting it in to start with I guess )

Re: budget economy pinto, 32.6 mpg on sidedrafts, a pinto named dave

Just spent the last 2hrs reading this start to end and the build info was most enlightening. I do have one thought regarding the 'polishing chambers / ports makes no difference' I'd disagree with this when applied to chamber and exhaust port! Its long been known that a polished inlet looses airflow & turbulence so giving poor efficiency but for an economy engine where you are trying to improve cylinder efficiencies and minimise heat transfer, a very fine polish will achieve that. Surface roughness aids heat transfer due to increased surface area so not good in cylinder. In the exhaust, rejected heat speeds gas flow and with a 'designed' exhaust provides a degree of extraction improving cylinder filling/dilution with short overlap cams. Just my thoughts - any comments?

why polish? doesnt matter how shiny you make it once it has ANY sort og mileage on it it will be be covered in carbon.

also if polishing made any significant power, economy or even emission advantages the car manufactures would be doing it, they dont!

Re: budget economy pinto, 32.6 mpg on sidedrafts, a pinto named dave

WOW! It was only a comment! But firstly if its an 'economy' engine then one assumes that mixtures under tight control will burn 'cleaner' leaving little carbon / residues? A polished surface is harder for combustion products to stick to - they will over time but the longer they stay free the better? And as regards OEM doing it - its an additional process that has a cost uplift associated and it most likely isn't cost efficient for everyday sales but i'm betting those 'factory' units picked for mileage testing get blueprinted, relieved and polished internally throughout before, to get the best results possible?
