    Question Coilover helper spring

    I was searching for helper spring for my mk2 escort (trackday/hillclimb car), and I notice that there are several spring rates, and I have no idea which rate I will choose. Currently running with 2.25x10.5x180lbs main springs, unknown inserts.

    Wonder if anyone can advise which is the best rate for this purpose?

    I would get the lowest spring rate you can buy, especially with 180 lb/in springs.

    It really depends on what youre trying to achieve, if its to make the travel more progressive then you have to match the helper spring close to your 180ld spring otherwise the intitial travel will be too soft and you'll get a quick suspension movement followed by a slower one, meaning the travel wont be progressive, it will be jerky.

    We used this type of helper spring on a Group A Cosworth, the only purpose it served on our car was to hold the spring in situ when the suspension was on full droop. The spring was of very low poundage and would compress when the weight of the car was applied to it. if you look at the thin coils on the helper spring you can see that this can serve as no other purpose.

    That is my understanding of them, I assume in rallying if you leave the ground enough you could unseat the spring. Or when you lower your car off the jack it stops that big clang as the spring seats back again.

    Dependant of what poundage you select, if the spring wont fully compress under the weight of the car it will act like a progressive spring in conjunction with the main spring.
