BDA Cam carrier to head gasket

Does anyone have experience with the BDA cam carrier assembly and in particular the gasket that appears on the engine exploded view between the cam carrier and the top of the head.
    How thick are these?
What is the correct name for the gasket? and any advice on sourcing as they are not in the Burtons 'complete' kit i received, and i don't see them on the site.

    Hello James,

there used to be a very thin paper gasket in the set. Very thin otherwise it would/could upset the valve clearances.
I used one on my first BD 20+ years ago but it was very prone and didn't seal properly.
Instead I use a pro flexible gasket maker (tube); it is on a rubber basis (non silicone).
You need just a very small layer of it as most of it is pushed out when you put the camcarrier onto the head.

    Regards, Leon.

    Hi Leon,

I have the same problem with a Lotus 907. What product do you use?

    Cheers, Steve

How do you account for tapper/shim adjustment.?
i would imagine the final assembly would have an error due to thickness of the rubber seal. Or is it negligible?

sealant thickness is negliable, dry build to get tappets correct, then final assembly with just a very thin coat of sealant, most of the sealant will ooze out when you bolt the carrier down.

    Thanks, Graham.
This is the very reason for my gasket sourcing question in the first place. I was try to account for gasket thickness for shim clearances.
i.e. a 40tho' gasket (instead of sealant) would require an increase of 40tho' to the shim size.

When using the thin paper gaskets you would have to use one every time you check the clearances.
Take the camcarrier off, clean surfaces, and use a new one.

i would use grease to stick the buckets in the carrier, but i t think the original ford method was use magnets to hold them in

Re: BDA Cam carrier to head gasket

Preferably you have the engine out of the car and turn the engine upside down so that the followers stay in place in the cam carrier (ie held in by the cams). Unfortunately this method may result in the shims falling out and you won't know which one came from where which is important for your clearances and any necessary adjustments.

If you are doing it "in-car" magnets are the way to do it but they've got to be strong ones.

The engine I've just worked on had top hat shims rather than biscuit shims and they tend to stay in place even when the engine is upside down (if there is oil in there which gives them stiction). Installing is easy upside down as there are no magnets needed, just stick the shims to the valves with grease. Again, this may not be quite as easy when using biscuit shims but the method still applies.

Re: BDA Cam carrier to head gasket

Before removing camcarrier (with cambelt still in place!) smear grease on the sides of every bucket when these are pushed up fully by the springs. Obviously you need to turn the camshafts (turn crank pulley) to get to every bucket.
That way the grease holds them inplace in the camcarrier.
Remove belt, take off camcarrier. The shims will probably fall out. Top hat shims are way better to use than the older type.
