I would suggest talking to Phil at Connaught Competition Engines in Kent UK
Very nice people to deal with, we have used a 2ltr on carbs version in a mk1 escort to many top 3 places and championship wins. Also use a 2.3 version in mk2 escort on jenvey & MBE. Again many top 3 finishes with absolute 100% reliability.
No similarities is a bold statement.
They build an array of marques of engine but specialise in holbay, keeping many spares, kits, gasket sets etc in stock, they also know & understand these engines inside out !
do you have his email? i've sent an email to info@connaughtengines.co.uk but havent replied yet.
Yes that is correct email. I do know they are all very busy in the workshop right now. I'm sure Phil will reply very soon.
The Warrior cylinder head was designed in the 80's by a company called Warrior Automotive from Manchester.
The Holbay head that gapzo requires parts for was designed and produced by Holbay Engineering in the 1970's. I doubt whether there are many parts around now for that head.
Yes, it was a bold statement but that is what I still think about the Holbay cylinder head parts availability. I hope they can help, I can only be happy to see these kind of engines brought back to life. It certainly is a part of the motorsport history and that head is in the Escort's homologation papers.
Anyway, it seems that the engine in the photos are in a kind of working order unless it is badly blown internally and nowadays there is almost no part in an engine which can not be reproduced, custom made etc etc. including the brand new Holbay cylinder head. It is just a matter of funds available for the project.
Ok yes you hit the nail on the head there. Items such as valves, valve springs, retainers, buckets and so on are all available. Cams are a lookalikie to a BD cam & can still be sourced locally.
With modern day engineering facilities & skills there is little reason why this old engine should not rise from the ashes again.
Do you run warrior/holbay kit in Istanbull these days ? If so , on what vehicle ?
There you go fella speak to http://www.dunnellengines.com/
Hi again Piekey,
I have a brand new Warrior 16v cylinder head ( from Connaught ) which I have bought many many years ago. But, unfortunately things did not work out as expected and our local regulations never allowed me to use this head in our championship. I had a hope but they never allowed that non FIA cylinder head but there still is a hope. If I were able to use, it would be in an Escort.
At the time of purchase, Connaught also had a hope that they could get an approval from FIA but that also did not work. If I am not wrong, as of today UK and Belgium are the only countries accepts the Warrior head in their local Historic Championship.
Yes,
Paul dunnell replied and willing to help with the parts. im parting the engine out today. all looks good. only the pulleys are in bad shape. it still mated with ford rocket 4 speed dogbox. will post some pictures of the internals. its holbay aluminium block with holbay stamping in the con rod as well.
Is it an alloy block really ?
I love the water pump system. I knew its existence and was thinking if it could be adapted to the iron block too.
my mistake its iron block
Hi I am new to this Forum and there are a lot of very interesting threads to read through. I am building a Escort Mk1( historic) Rallycar at the moment and i have to decide what engine is the best choice for the car . The holbay head is the only "legal" 16v head for the Rs 2000 but to find one is the problem, i think, after reading this thread. I am surrounded with the right people to get the head remanufactured ( digitalising ,rapid prototyping, casting and machining is no problem) but we need a head, cam cover, inlet manifold for carbs and slide throttle to get the project started. Please contact me for every part for sale to get "the real thing" remanufactured
Be careful with that proposal - someone may retain the copyright / rights to use the Holbay design so a scanned / digitised and re-cast replica could cause you issues !
It could be a great attempt and be certainly done. I may be wrong but I believe the copyright might be void for such an old item. However, to make it FIA legal, it has to be the exact replica. With today's low volume manufacturing capabilities it is not a difficult produce the head but certainly not feasible from a business point of view. Most of the FIA legal Escorts are now built as Gr.4 and a reliable BD series engines can be built at a relatively reasonable cost.
By the way, personally, I would love to own a newly produced Holbay head, no doubt !!!
Licenced right normally only last for a period of time
Say 15/20 years then the licence will need up dating
And all this cost money
So they may well not be to bothered now as they may have made there money from
It already
Or they just have ip rights
Which unfortunate can be worked around
As my friend found out
He designed and manufactured the yb hart plenum
Then another company copied it 100%
And his legal people wanted a fair wack of cash to sort it
And they still couldn't be sure he would win
There are 2 kind of license (patent). One on the picture (look, view) and one on working principe. Can't remember exact anymore but one can be taken 5 years longer as the other. I believe 20 years was max for a patent 25 for the look, picture, view (I have one running for my Porsche 911 carb set). After this EVERYBODY can make a legal copy. I can make a legal copy of a Ford Escort MK 2 and nobody, including Ford can stop me. Same for Webers, cylinder heads and whatever.
Only pharmacy and farm products (like special tomato's etc...) can be taken longer, up to 40 years. You need to pay every year and every year more and more expensive. Usual they only pay as long as the production last or as long as the product is interested to make money.
I know where there is an Alloy Holbay Block so yes they do exist...
