Re: Mk2 project...Here we go again on my own( na na na na)

Another day down, another few jobs knocked on the head!
Yesterday i drilled 5 large holes in a measured piece of sheet metal to be fitted to the front panel instead of the traditional 2 rectangles which i guess is for the radiator and air getting to it!

I made my markings around the sheet metal on the front panel and cut the section out leaving about a 1cm lip on it so i could use my metal flange to crimp the edges of the metal, doing this the new sheet metal with the holes in it sat nicely in place so i then welded it all up then grinded it all down flush.

Next job was to weld in the large radiator cut out panel, before i did this i had to clean up all the edges where it was going to be welded in and trim it down a little so it sat in a little more flush.
With that welded in the next job was to weld in the strengthening gussets for the radiator side sections.

More or less i think that is the welding finished on the front end, unless im forgetting anything!

Next job which i think i will start on monday will be preparing for putting the wings on! Hopefully next week the front end will be finished and in primer!

Once the wings are on il go back and tidy up my welds on the gusset panels cause there a bit messy!

Re: Mk2 project...Here we go again on my own( na na na na)

Another couple of days done on the escort.
Was out and about picking up supplies on monday but atleast managed to get a little bit done! On monday i prepared both the wings for fitting, Punched and drilled all the holes for the spot welding and made sure all my edges were bare metal and zinc primed! Fitted the bonnet again and checked every thing was in line!
Tuesday i self tapped the wings in place and re aligned the doors and bonnet to make sure they were all looking as good as i could get them. Then after about 2 hours of welding, The wings are now on!
The grinder came out to clean my welds up a bit and as far as i can think, thats the front end all welded up and looking good!

Il get back on the car on thursday and start preparing the front end for a coat of epoxy primer(epoxymastic), expensive stuff! apparently its the same stuff that gets used to paint oil rigs and stuff like that to protect against rust!

Re: Mk2 project...Here we go again on my own( na na na na)

Finally after days and days of bare metaling i got a coat of epoxy primer on the car! Well the front end atleast!

But still, it makes such a big difference seeing atleast the front end all in one colour! Certainly helps with motivation!
First time ive picked up a spray gun in nearly a year! Dusted off the old GTI and all was good! It had a little splutter where i welded the holes in the front panel but its only epoxy, itl sand out!

Next step i think is i will just go ahead and start bare metaling the roof and in all the door checks and stuff and spray some epoxy on there too! Or maybe il jst use etch on the roof!

Not really had a lot of time to work on the car recently but i did manage to paint strip the roof and the door checks and sills! I used a strip and clean disc for the grinder then got the rest with lots of different shaped wire brushes for the grinder and drill! Very time consuming but worth it in the end as i now have a nice clean smooth roof and door checks! Im just waiting on some more epoxy primer to be delivered then i can get it coated up!

Hopefuly in the next few days it will arive and i can get that done!

Re: Mk2 project...Here we go again on my own( na na na na)

Nothing much to show here! The cars been sitting for over a week waiting on some more epoxy primer to arive! Decided to get 5 litres of the stuff! so every inch of the car will be propper rust proofed!

It arrived today so i went round the garage and got it ready to spray the roof and door checks and now its all coated up! No more of that horrible fluffy sticky roof where the vinyl was ripped off!

Next job is to bare metal the rear inner wheel arches and put a coat of epoxy in there along with the two quarters and rear panel which has all been sitting in bare metal since the start of the year so il need to wire brush it all again with the grinder!

Il need to get some tramp bars before i take the axle off but that will need to wait till next month cause the epoxy was fooking expensive!

Re: Mk2 project...Here we go again on my own( na na na na)

Got another couple of days done on the car! Gave the rear quarters and back panel a little clean up from any surface rust that appeared and stripped and bare metalled the boot check, Coatd it all up in epoxy and that was enough for one day!

Next day i started stripping and bare metalling the rear inner tubs, Quite alot of surface rust under tons of under seal!! Luckily it all cleaned off really nicely and i managed to coat up the inner tubs with epoxy.

I forgot my camera today so theres no pictures of todays progress yet! But i put the alloy fuel tank platform in place with the fuel tank on and made a template out of hard board for the rear fire wall! Drew around it on a large bit of sheet metal and cut it out! Fire wall fits perfectly so now its just a matter of some filing to make the tank platform sit flush in the boot! I just need to clean up and bare metal where the fire wall and tank platform go and its good to be welded in!

Also my tramp bars arrived today so they will be getting fitted soon!

Epoxy mastic its called! Aparently its the same stuff they use to paint oil rigs in the north sea with so i though what better stuff to protect a rusty old escort!

it should be ok, the guy only seems to stock stuff that is usable on cars and i know he likes these sort of protections to be overpaintable otherwise they are useless in a resto unless they are used on hidden bits which there arent many of! Fingers crossed this should be the most unrusty escort ever in the future

Re: Mk2 project...Here we go again on my own( na na na na)

    Another wee update!

The scraper and heat gun were out again! Completely stipped the paint from inside the boot then went over it all with a wire brush attached to the grinder and drill. Had to do a little filing down of the fuel tank platform before it sat flush with the boot floor. I then put a coat of epoxy underneath the tank platform and just coated up where the platform was going to sit. Got it sitting in place and started welding!

All welds cleaned up it was now time to start putting in the fire wall. I already had both parts of the fire wall cut to shape, now it was just the matter of tacking it all in place! I think it actually came out quite nice! im pretty pleased with it as i can actualy start to see the car taking shape now! So the fire wall in, now all i need to do is piece in the corners of the fire wall to finish it off and the boot area will be finished once ive cleaned off all my welds and coated inside the boot with epoxy!

There was an area which i was dreading! I noticed the passenger footwell was totally caked in filler and sealler so i decided to strip it and see what was underneath, and to my surprise there were no holes, only previous welds that hadnt been grinded down so i was delighted when i noticed i had no more repairs to do on the floor!!

Once the boots finished il need to place the roll cage inside and see where im going to put the plates for the roll cage...

Re: Mk2 project...Here we go again on my own( na na na na)

Only managed a little bit this week! mainly just stood about and looked at it cause ive got the man flu!

I finished off in the boot area, ground down my welds and finished bare metaling it all! Its now all coated in epoxy.
It looks a little browny and dyed around the tank platform but i recon there must of just been some kind of coating on it thats dyed the grey a bit!! im sure itl be fine, its just the under coat anyway!

Started fitting the roll cage so i can see where the plates will go. The roll cage was a fookin nightmare to get in! then i realised id put it in the wrong way round!
So its all in now! not sure if im gonna use the door bars but there detachable anyway!

I have metal which is around 2 1/2 mm thick! Any suggestions on if this is the right thickness for cage plates?

I think once the cage plates are in the next job will be tramp bars! Then move my gear stick hole back a bit and the car will be ready to go on its side for the floor!
    Not looking forward to that!!

My mate who has a genuine Rs2000 is cossying his car and decided to flog his pinto so i think im gonna go for it! He recons its about 150bhp complete with twin 45s and loaded with Burton shit! So it may have a worthy engine going in it after all!!

Once again apologies for the poor pic quality!! Must remember digi camera next time!!

dave 2.5 mm should be ok for plates as im sure ther 3mm when u buy a cage, jsut make sure you make them bigger than the foot plates on the cage,at least 20mm bigger all round,
i think i better get ma finger out and start the mk1 as gettin plenty stick from the "painter and his sidekick doon the road"
    cheers
