Re: Mk2 project...Here we go again on my own( na na na na)

    Hey Folks

Not been overly productive the past couple months but i have managed to get a little done! Ive just started a new job as a Grapic Designer for an event production company so im pretty busy these days! The student days are long gone!

after painting the interior, my main focus has been trying to get rid of any dents etc from the body work in preparation for the U Pol surfacer that im applying before primer, I remember using it at my old work and its really good for avoiding a ripply looking panel after painting. Ive got a set of long blocks as well which im going to use to get the panels dead straight! Its all ready now and if its not too cold ill get that sprayed on tomorrow night. Managed to make a start on rebuilding the back end too and the car now has a rear axle, ive got a new set of Gaz adjustable that are going on too. I managed to pick up a pair of Bilstein struts for a good price on Ebay Popped round to the garage after work last night and stripped and painted them all ready to be fitted. Il put some pics up once i get the surfacer on the car.

So I managed to pop round on Friday night and spray 3 coats of Upol Surfacer on the two side and the front and rear panels. Its really thick stuff so theres plenty to block down and make nice and level. Im gonna pop round a couple nights this week and start rubbing it. Next step is fitting the arches!!

Alrite mate, hows it going? car is looking good now!

What is this upol surfacer that you are using, never heard of it before? Is it upol high build primer?

What size of nozzel did you use and what grade you flattening it with? Do you then high build on top?

    Soz for all the questions!

    Hey mate

The Upol stuff isn't primer! its more like liquid body filler, its used for levelling out repairs. Not a lot of people use it but when i used to work for Mercedes everyone used it! If you ever watch Overhauling you'll see they always use it there too! Its really thick stuff so you need a thicker nozzle gun. I bought a cheap one years ago for about 60 quid. Cant remember the size of the nozzle but i might be at the garage tonight so i can find out!

This is the stuff here mate! i got 3 tins and that got 3 coats on both the sides and the front and rear panels, I was round at the garage last night but totally forgot to check the nozzle sizes on the gun so il try remember next time I'm round! Yes you put high build on as normal after it! Its like a really fine cataloy (body filler) but is really easy to rub with 120, I've been using 180s just so I'm not rubbing it all away at once! You get a better build with it than primer and its a good way to level out any ripples in the body!

You use one bottle of hardener to a tin!

Cheers for the comments guys, appreciate the support!
The colour is Magnum Grey metallic! its a Ford Ka colour i think.

Well ive spent a bit of time rubbing down all the Upol Reface stuff, and im really happy with the results, all the panels feel really straight and even though its a light colour im painting the car, im confident the body work should be rippleless! Im now at the stage where im stripping all the panels, Ie the bonnet, boot and both the doors in preparation for hight build priming! ill get them ready to paint and then move onto fitting the arches. I spent a bit of time on the boot yesterday, measuring out the holes for the spoiler. After spending a bit of time being overly fussy, i think it paid off as the spoiler looks spot on! Then i welded up the holes for the badges and what looks like holes that were holding on a chrome strip! Stripped the boot on the top, just need to do the underside now so i can get it primed and prepped!

Here are a few pictures of the alloy rocker cover I have, Im having a bit of difficulty trying to find an oil cap to fit it as it seems to be an akward size!

Just wondered if any of you lovely people on here can help me find one? Its 40mm in diameter and it is threaded! If any one knows where to get them from, or if anyone knows some one who could make one or has one etc etc please could you let me know! Its doing my head in not being able to find something so simple!

    Cheers folks

Re: Mk2 project...Here we go again on my own( na na na na)

Been getting a little bit done here and there for the past few weeks! I think since my last post i managed to get the boot all etch primed and high build primed, thats all rubbed down now and basically ready for some Olympic Blue to go on! The rear arches are fixed permanently into place with sealer and counter sunk rivets. I then put a light skim of filler over the arches just to get rid of the welding joins and the rivets. Im quite pleased with how the arches are looking actually! they look really flush and it doesn't half help with the motivation seeing them on!!

The past couple of days ive been working on the passenger door, its all ready for primer on the outside but the inside needed fully stripped back to bare metal, Pretty much every bit of metal at the rear of the door was fresh clean metal before i stuck the coat of epoxy primer on it! I seriously think i have an OCD for bare metal! Im not happy unless its totally clean!
I ran out of time today but one night next week ill nip round and bash about 3 coats of high build filler on the door. The drivers door is all ready for primer, i stripped that back to metal and epoxied it a few months ago! Just needs a quick scotchy and its good to go!

My next step once the doors are done is to finish putting the axle, tramp bars and rear shocks on the car, put the rear wheels on and then turn the car around in the garage do i can have more room to fit the front arches and spoiler

Once there on, its just the bonnet i need to prep and were ready for priming the shell!!!

    nice update there .
    never saw that primer before.
a have always use u-pol filler primer and rub down with 400 or 500 grit with a interface pad .then wet flat with 800.
    works for me.

    Cheers mate,

Yeah it works as a kind of liquid cataloy! Basically for fussy beggars like me!
I can guarantee that ill still not be happy with the final finish! Its good for eliminating a ripply panel, you know how sometimes when you look at a car thats been restored, you can see ripples in the body work from all the filler, This is just a good way of levelling all that out before primer!

Re: Mk2 project...Here we go again on my own( na na na na)

    Hey Folks

Another little update, its been a while!
We've just sold our flat and bought a house so progress on the car has been a little slower than usual! Theres always little jobs to do on the house so escaping it has proven to be rather difficult lately.

Since my last post, ive turned the car around in the garage to begin work on the front end. The bonnet has been completely stripped back to bare metal! verging on being slightly anal on this but never mind! Ive given the bonnet a skim of filler, 3 coats of Upol reface, blocked that all down then applied 4 coats of high build primer. The under side has been stone chipped so the bonnet is now ready for the final rub then paint!

Once that was done ive spent the past few nights working on fitting the front arches and spoiler. I decided to work on it all day Saturday so the arches are now test fitted along with the spoiler ready to be removed so i can trim the arches and front panel down a little. Only one word i can say about fitting the front spoiler.....NIGHTMARE!!!! Seriously, not a quick job, i was at it for hours before i decided i was happy with it. It takes a fair bit of reshaping to say the least!

Anyway, its looking good now and im happy with how there sitting, it was also nice to have all 4 wheels on the ground for the first time in nearly 4 years! So i rolled it out the garage so i could stand and stare at it for ages with a cup of tea! lol

Im always amazed at how small an Escort looks when its not in a garage! lol.

Any way, more frequent updates to follow hopefully! lol

Il try get some photos up later, im at work just now and the uploaders not really working!!

Hi mate, cars looking sweet, just a wee spot though, the front spoiler is on a bit low, maybe it's because it's the short type but it should go over the curve on the front panel not below it, I'm in Edinburgh too if you fancy a wee look at mine your more than welcome to pop round.

Cheers mate, Although i wish i seen this comment before i riveted and bonded the spoiler in place! At this stage im not sure weather or not to remove it or leave it as it is. I may more more of a mess trying to put it up a couple of inches. I think if it was sitting a couple inches higher i might struggle to get it meeting the arches right on the corners, i dont think its long enough! Ive got a bit of thinking to do me thinks!

On a more positive note though! the wheels arrived the other day there, there looking proper sexy! Fill the arches a treat! Getting some tyres fitted on Saturday!

Wheels look good bud, what tyres are you using? I'm on 205 50 15's on 8'' rims, fill the arches perfectly although mine are forest arches, I'm using +10mm grp4 alloy hubs on the front.

Using the same size mate, 205 50 15s, It was a slightly more affordable size of tyre and more readily available! If i went for 215 or 225s the price difference was mental! Managed to pick myself up a set of Toyo T1 Proxes for a good price

Looking good Dave, how do they look on the back? have you got a different offset front to bk? That's where you might have problems filling them

I was gonna get 9x15s on the back but went for the more affordable option! On the back I've got spacers and longer studs! Theres not a huge powerplant goin in so figured spacers would be fine! Eventually the running gear will all change as I plan on keeping this one!

    Hey Folks

Apologies for the lack of posts recently! Still been bashing on with it but forgetting to take pictures along the way!

The whole cars been primed with 4 coats of white, 2 pack high build filler primer and the past few weeks ive just been spending a bit of time on each panel, blocking it all down with 320 strips on long blocks and then over it all with 800wet and dry. Then any rub throughs have been coated over with High 5 aerosol then flattened with 1200 wet or dry paper. Any little pin holes have been filled in with Dolphin Glaze filler (great stuff)
So far ive done the roof, bonnet, boot lid, both front wings and the front panel, Ive decided to blend the front spoiler in to the front panel so need to apply a little filler to hide the join them prime it again. After thinking about it for ages ive decided to leave the front panel where it is. Yes it probably should be a little higher but it really doesnt bother me where it is and i think id make a horrendous mess trying to fix it. The annoying thing is that i had it sitting higher before but it wouldnt reach the arches which is why i dropped it a little, i think it was too short to fix it a couple inches higher. I may decide to change it later down the line but for now im happy with it.

Ive got a full new set of brakes for it, brand new everything, callipers, pads, shoes and drums. My Dads been bashing on with the rear breaks and there all now fitted, hes about to start laying down all the new brake lines as well. Also the longer studs for bigger wheels are fitted. Once all the lines are in well get the front end all built up, including dropping the engine in. We got a new clutch for it as well as we figured while the engine was out we would just change it. So its got a new clutch as well! Anyway, its moving along, just really slowly as now is the time when i start being really anal about the paintwork.
