Mk2 project...Here we go again on my own( na na na na)

Just thought id put up this thread to show the mk2 im about to start building!

Brought it back from North Yorkshire last week in possibly the worst weather ive ever seen.. Took us over 6 hours to get back from Newcastle as we were stuck in Morpeth where there was insane floods everywhere! Never seen anything like it

Any way here it is! I took some pictures of it in Newcastle So il put some more up in a couple of days!

Looks like a good project to get your teeth into. What are your plans for it? Are you registered with SOSE?

    Whats SOSE?

Its a really solid shell but it does need a fair bit welding..Luckily its more or less just replacing panels and everything that is needing replaced is there and was included in the sale

Well i think the plans are to build it for racing but the to be built as a road runner aswell!

Just took delivery of a set of Boreham arches and spoiler so its gettin arched!!

Well ive just finished day one on the project! Well i say day one but i ended up lyin in my bed till mid day then gettin started!

    Student life eh!

Any way ! managed to get the rear panel chopped off today ready for its fresh new one! Luckily it wasnt rotten it was just really warped at the bottom so it wasnt too bad taking it off!!
Need to finish off tidying up round the edges tomorrow and i might get stuck into choppin out the spare wheel well and tank well!

Although it might be a good chance to chop up the back panel and practice some welding skills!

Heres some photos of the progress so far! And before you say! I know the picture quality is crap as i forgot my camera so ended up using my phone which has a shit camera! as you can see

Re: Mk2 project...Here we go again on my own( na na na na)

Well thats me just finished another shift on the Escort!
I actualy think i prefer the fact im only workin on the car 2 days a week cause it lets me get the motivation back up and plenty time to think about my next plan of attack!

Just finished my first attempt at welding on the car! And to be honest for a complete novice im quite chuffed with myself!

I did the outer and inner sections of the fuel tank well! Ive spot welded all the bits that get spot welded but the bits that need a seam welded along it ive just tacked in place untill i get more use to the welder and more confident to put a neat weld along it!

Also went along to my mates today and picked up the roll cage for it 6 point bolt in with rear diagonal and door bars!

Any suggestions on the thickness of metal to use for the floor plates to bolt the cage on top off???

i would think 3mm thick plate would be ok to mount the cage on

I cant really be proud of any welding yet cause im only tacking and spot welding things in place just now!! Once i get a little handier with a welder il go for some seam welds.

Im itching to get back into it but i need to wait till next week till i can hopefully get the back end finished off!!

Job after the back end i think is the rear arches!!

Got a little done today! Unfortunately the gas ran out on the welder! Blooming typical!

Got everything sitting in place! Just waiting on the gas which il try get tomorrow!

For some reason i cant seem to get the back panel to sit flush with the floor! its clamped perfectly in place to the quarters but for some reason its sitting about 5-10mm away from
    the floor!

Finally got back onto the mk2 today! Got quite alot done as i managed to actualy get my arse out of bed this morning and get stuck in!
Welded in the outer section of the spare wheel well Then i prepped the back end to fit the back panel and then welded the back panel in place! Doesnt sound like alot but it took me fookin ages!
Its amazing what you can make fit with a hammer!!

Then decided to have another look at the rear arches and trying to figure out where to cut!

Back end done! Next job is the rear arches!!
Got a bit of time off next week so should get a bit done then!

Here are some pictures of my rear arch lined up at the bottom! Il need to modify the swage line at the top but i need some opinions on wether or not there sitting too high or not! Baring in mind there not tarmac arches there boreham arches! Same as clints!

For the back arches, have a look for one of garys threads on a car he has tubbed. Cut out the arch around where it starts to curve to the 1/4 to ensure you dont cut too much out. Then split the tub down the middle joint, drill out the spot welds if you have the patience! Then come out from the middle square to the tub and mark the 1/4 at that point, cut that line out and then get yourself some flat sheet steel, curve it so it follows the shape of the tub and your cut on the 1/4 then weld it in and trim it off and youll have a perfect solid outer tub

    Cheers mate

i found the thread. I can remember looking at that one before! Total bummer he had to sell it, that car was mint!

Hes fitted the big tubs on the rear whereas on my one im only semi tubbing it cause im only gonna be using 13s in the car!

Clints orange one is a good one to look at but theres only b4 the arches were cut pics then pics of the arches after theyve been semi tubbed but it does give me a rough idea of where to cut!

Dont cut it by pictures, cut it to where your car needs cutting. From the pics of marks car you can get an idea of what it should look like, ie you will keep the inner tub and come off square from that to the 1/4 and then tack the tub to the 1/4 with lots of small spots of weld (thats how marks were done). Just obviously dont cut anywhere near as much of the 1/4 out as the tubs mark had were bigger diameter wise too

Yeah i nkow what you mean! I just meant i was looking at the picture for a guide of what its meant to look like!
Youve helped us out alot with your suggestions tho mate cheers! Think il just go for how you said before and just trim the arch of a little then split the outer tub off and measure out straight from there!

    Chers buddy
