Pinto 205 block vs 2.0 block

    Hello,

    I will make a 2.1 Pinto.
Why does everybody wants the "famous" 205 block?
Are there people here who have made fast 2.1 pinto's with the 20 block?
Positive and negative opinions about the "ordinary" 20 block are welcome !

Re: Pinto 205 block vs 2.0 block

the 205 block is said to thicker cylinder walls, they also have thicker main bearing caps. a 2.0 bare block weighs in at 40kg the 205 42kg, so theres not that much extra material in there.

that said people were boring 20 blocks to 93mm for years before the 205 came along

The differences I noted is thicker lower part where sump is being fitted, also l there is a bung on the left lower side of the block (useful for turbo drain) on 205 block. Deck thickness seems to be similar, don't know about cylinder wall and floor thickness though.

Re: Pinto 205 block vs 2.0 block

    Ok thanks for the replies.
I have 4 2.0 blocks. Some people have said I have to start with a 205 block, because the 2.0 is more sensitive to burst. Now it's to stupid for words to buy a 205 block when I have 4 others...
So now I'm looking for some experiences with the 2.0 block before I will start making mine ....

I would like to make a 2.1 with forged pistons, BF63 cam, twin 45, ported head with 38-44.5 valves.
Are the Rods from a 205 better then the 2.0 ? With my specs, which rods should I use?

I'm running turbo on 20 block at 280 bhp (on standard bore), I think it's strong enough

david vizard was running turbocharged 20 pinto blocks at well over 400bhp, i recall him writing that block distortion set in with vengeance at 450bhp, in other words they are very very strong, that said not all will bore safely to 93mm

I've got a 20 block on my bench at the mo bored to 93mm, two bores have got hot spots with cracks in them.

Re: Pinto 205 block vs 2.0 block

why 2.1? a + 0.060 rebore gives about 2060cc and unless you are very unlucky it will be just fine, the power difference between that and 2.1 will be negligible, personally i woudl simply bore the block to whatever size it needs to make it good again.

i see no point in boring to 93mm , unless its going with a stroker crank to make 2.2 or bigger, then i think going to 93mm is worthwhile

It was just a standard 2.0 block bored out. Unfortunately for this person it was an eBay purchase, the hot spots were below the piston crown when at bdc so could not be seen unless stripped. This was another case of a rip off sellers on eBay. No real come back as the engine was not going to be built/ checked thoroughly for a couple of years. This could have been a lot more serious for this person if a head had been fitted then in the car only to find it overheat possibly hydraulic and cause serious damage to a lot of parts let alone to his wallet. As Graham says not a great deal more performance to be gained from the extra cc at a possible cost to realiability. More pub bragging rights than actual power.

Ok, thanks for the replies Guys !
I was also thinking that way, I will just bore it to 92mm, not the 93mm. That will be a little "safer"

One last question, Are the rods and cam followers of the 205 stronger than those of the 2.0 block?

cam followers are same, later rods are thicker, and marginally stronger, but not by much

You can use VW T1 pistons in 92mm bore. They have 22 mm pin. If you fit the VW small end bronze bush into the Pinto rod, it's a perfect fit. Pistons are very cheap in good quality. You need to skimm the block a little.
