    cheap duratec power...

More and more people seem to be saying these duratec engines are ace, but i was wondering how easy they are to get worth-while power figures from?

example, a set of 45 jenveys, cams, a nice flowed head and a big manifold on a zetec and you should see 200bhp easy if its set up properly.

what sort of power would you get doing the same to a duratec? i had a look on SBD website and they are selling these taper throttle bodie kit, 6k for the 270bhp version

    anybody got an idea?

its much better than a zetec, you can get the same 200 bhp the zetec will give without headwork or cams

    something like that,

rods are the weakest link apparently but only when your talking serious revs as i understand it, cranks also when pulling very very very high revs, opinion seems to vary as to how high std cranks will stand, some say 8k others 9 or more

For 250 you will need rods, pistons and cams

soooo there is a reason why people choose a zetec over a duratec then.... internals are weak and the zetecs are sooo cheap to replace, probably cheaper than a pinto now

i think that calling a component weak when its rated to 250bhp is being a little er... unrealistic?

yeh ok, your right, phrased that wrong. but what i meant to say was to get anywhere near the engine mid potential you have to expect to change the internals...

dont forget how light the duratec is, thats a big plus in the lightweight escorts and stuff it gets put into.

    Re: cheap duratec power...

My rods and pistons cost me 670 quid.
    Cams where aroundthe 400 mark.
Put this together with the cheapness of the doner engine and its bloody cheap. Ok you need an exhaust manifold and tb's + management but then you do with all off te engines. (or carbs if you like)
Fully loaded with manifolds, flywheel and clutch my engine was a little over 100kgs

sounds awesome matt, what spec is your engine and how much power are you hoping to see from it?

    Re: cheap duratec power...

It makes sense, i cant really decide zetec or duratec for mine in the next year or so. A zetec will be cheaper and easier since the bits are out there and cheap, but the powers not as good and its still fairly heavy compared. That said i can do like you say zetec for now then duratec at a later date when bits become cheaper. Tbh i would prob just stick a set of bodies and an ecu on an otherwise standard engine and run it that way. 200bhp from a stock engine is enough for now

Wossner pistons, Steel rods, standard crank, dry sump, jenvey straght to head tb's, cosworth 270 cams. The heads being played with as we speak but although they are good heads as standard when you get into them they are what they are. Cheap mass produced and quite poor quality.
    As or power?
I'll wait for the dyno to tell us that
