    Inlet manifold off...



    Plenum made for MAP sensor, as the engine wasn't behaving quite right...



    All back together, and seems a lot better... Engine is more responsive to throttle applied. Next on the list is a new radiator and fan... I took some pics on my test session today and a video of it running.









    When ticking over throttle response still seems a bit sluggish when the revs are low (below 2000) but after that it revs like a good un.

    When driving (i don't have a rev counter so i'm guessing) the engine doesn't have a lot of torque, but once it gets past 3500?? It takes off
    Is this normal for this engine? Anyone know?

    The 4AGE in standard form has the tvis system, standing for Toyota Variable Induction System. this is an additional set of butterflies that are located in the inlet manifold. You'll notice that the old manifold has 8 inlet pipes, 2 for each cylinder, one of the two will have this extra butterfly. Below 3500rpm (but dont quite me on that figure) these butterflies are closed, thus increasing the velocity of the air entering the combustion chamber and thus creating the quick throttle response and improving low down torque below 3500rpm.

    Once the revs reach 3500rpm, the butterflies open and increases the inlet size into the cyclinder, this allows a much larger volume of air to flow at required flow rate, as is required at higher rpm to produce the grunt.

    I'm sure if you google Toyota TVIS you will find information that explains it alot better than i can but thats the basics for you.

    As on your engine you have throttle bodies from a 20v version that doesnt have the tvis. The engine will run perfectly fine without the tvis, but this will affect the low down grunt of the engine as you have experienced. Power output is not affected, so your engine will still produce the standard bhp figure, about 130bhp. Idle throttle response is also affected and is slower, due to the slower inlet air velocity below 3500rpm. but above that it'll produce good response and grunt, it'll rev right up to about 9000rpm max, 8000 is the reasonable safe limit.

    The 4AGE is not a torquey engine anyway, its designed to rev, but it can be tuned to produce more torque.

    A long response but i do hope it answers your questions and queries.

    p.s the throttle bodies sound the bollox

    Thanks Deano. I understand the TVIS system and the extra torque it creates. I just thought that the torque was a little low even with the TVIS off... can't have everything i suppose

    Very nice looking install there mate, very sweet and love the trumpets

    Looks to me like an airflow speed problem may be adding to the slow low rev throttle response. Those trumpets look the dogs danglies but they have a wide internal diameter and are short, if im right that'll give slow initial response. (The long inlet may also affect it )

    Somewhere between the beer cans and the wide boys would probably be about right. Good luck with sorting it, she's a stunner

    Cheers mate. I have been looking into getting some longer trumpets, but nothing has come up yet...
    I have heard the same as you, but i have never had throttle bodies before, so do know how true it is, or how much difference it makes??
    I thought a long inlet was supposed to give more torque too...?

    my friend says the shorter rampipes u used, the better this 4AGE engine will response. u'll feel the power at high rev 8K to 9K rpm. he used a 20V tb too.. bigger exaust manifold may helps.. i'll ask more what could be upgrade for standard bottom end to gain power. will let u know mate..anyway, he agreed with what deano shares with us..

    well, ur mk1 looks hot!

    Not sure on capacity... But it is actually a bit smaller than the STD one, But i would imagine it will keep the car cool better because it's new and has a nice big fan.

    Well... I bought a stand alone Apexi Power FC for the car.
    As it has had TB's fitted and still running the STD ECU, is doesn't run 100% and drinks a lot of fuel...
    It has a MAP setup for the Engine Load, and with TB's a MAP sensor is not the best as the vacuum signal is very unstable and is only good when the throttle is closed (tick over)
    I was told that the Power FC can be tuned from the TPS... I took it over to the tuners today and after an hour of head scratching... I refitted the STD ECU. The Power FC can only be tuned from a MAP or Airflow signal. So no good for my application.
    I am going to look into other options...
    Apexi SAFC maybe, although i know it wont run 100% with this piggyback, it will run better than it does now.

    I've managed to find and buy a Toyota Racing Developments - TRD ECU



    It's not exactly what you would call state of the art, but it is adjustable... and on the fly
    Fitted it into the car and initial tests look good... Not too sure if it really has any more power, but the plugs are retuning to their golden brown colour instead of carbon black, which should be lighter on my pocket and better for the engine.
    Adjustable camshaft pullies fitted... And a bit of a tidy up on the wiring...

    New ECU F-con Vpro 2.1 fitted and tuned, i must say it now pulls like a train and revs a lot better and is a lot lighter on fuel!
    Changed to distibutorless ignition and coil pack also.
    I tried to get an in car video but the camera is playing up!





    I could really do with wiring tiding up, maybe the battery moving to the boot and the coil pack fitting where the battery is, at the moment there is nowhere else for it to go...

    Have a word with Steve G at Race Engine Calibration, sponsor on here. He's pretty clued up on the Toyota set up. He'll know the best type of standalone ecu for it and how to set it up. See his videos on youtube of Mike Storrars engine on the dyno. google Steve Greenald and you'll find a whole list of dyno stuff of his.

    It's a bit of a pain to get to fill up the brake master cylinder, because the whole filter has to be removed... But i think it looks nice.
