I agree... some more wheels... I was going to go today, but the car has been spitting it toys out of the pram again. which means i haven't had time.

Since i had the rear axle fitted the gear box has started complaining... I think it liked the old axle more than the new one. So it looks like i am going to have to have it rebuilt.

    Still... it looks nice

Re: Mk1 Escort Almost There... (almost)

I went to have a look at some wheels this weekend...

    I had a look at the 17's...

But when i saw them on the car... I didn't like them... Far too big and made the car look silly.

So i put on some 15's...

And decided on the black spokes...

The owner of the shop has a Mitsubishi Celeste with the 17's on... Looks ok close up, but from a distance it looks odd...

This is partly what put me off the 17's as i saw him drive up the road, and saw how odd it looked...

So 15's fitted with 195/45/15 tyres...

It could do with lowering an inch or so and i think it will look a lot better...

Don't start that... I was at that wheel shop, deciding for about an hour, on the spoke colour!

It was a toss up between silver and black...

love the way you can "try before you buy" over there. Excellent.

I would personally have gone for the anthracite colour, and you deffo made a good choice on the 15's. I think the 17's would have looked ok in Silver though, and lowered a bit.

    does look the nuts though

    Thanks Guys.

The try before you buy is good yeah... I can't see them spending 2-3 hours with me messing about in the UK

They are 15x8 et-12 (minus) But they are available in a 0 offset too.

The wheels are around £80 each (depending on exchange rate) + a choice of tyres (many different ones) Mine were £50 each - 195/45/15 Federal Brand (Taiwan)

The PCD on the wheels are 114.4 and 100 (8 stud holes)

No 108... It just isn't popular over here.

As i said earlier, or in another thread... The Escort hubs can take a 114.4 stud pattern being drilled into them (i have done it) whilst still retaining the 108 PCD holes... So if you want to swap back to 108 it is as easy as popping the studs out and changing holes.

Nice one Mark, it does look good on the 15s IMO

That Celeste would look a lot better with narrower rims and a less ridiculous tyre stretch!

HOLY SHIT Mark!!!!! I dont look at the thread for a week and look what ive missed!!!!!!

Unbelievable progress mate. The arches and cibies have made it a completely different animal and they have done a cracking job getting the bodywork and stripes all matched up. Love it!

And the 15" wheels suit her a treat. Though i wonder how the 17's would have looked without the polished outer rim?? A bit cartoony maybe but the car could have carried it off i reckon. You would need a big turbo on the 4age tho

    Great progress mate

    now that looks sweet

i think you made the right choice though , big arch need big rims , but maybe you can go too big ... ?

but i suppose if the power supports the 17s , then maybe a different story

    Never ending indeed.............

The head gasket has gone on the thing now!

    A few pics from today.

The head is ready to take off now, but i do not have a 12mm long socket to get to the head bolts. I will have to buy one tomorrow as there isnt anywhere open today.

A bit of wear on the cam and the journals... But it should be ok.

Checking the port sizes to match them to the inlet manifold. To be honest they are pretty damn close to the right size already, so i am not going to mess around with them.

I made a degree wheel for the crank shaft

And pulled the starter off... I knew there was a problem with it... Now i know why!

I am going to buy the bits to do the head tomorrow and hopefully it should be back up and running this week

It was meant as a joke... I did put a pic up of Shane Mcgawan with no teeth at all, but it doesn't seem to have worked!

Some more pics and a bit of advice needed...

Head off! You NEED a 3/8 10mm socket, 12 point, to get it off, or a 1/2inch long socket that goes as thin as a 3/8. I only had a 1/2 inch socket set, had to buy a new 3/8 one.

Back from the engineering shop - 0.5mm shaved off to help me boost compression.

I am going to use a 7afe head gasket as it is thinner and will also boost compression. Here is the 7afe gasket next to the 4age gasket

Some holes are not in the same places, but when you fit it to the head and the block, everything looks to go together ok.

When i was cleaning the block i found this little indentation. Hard to see in the pics, but with the naked eye and running your finger over it, it is definitely not flat.

The head shows similar signs or corrosion.

Seeing as the new head gasket is all metal, will this seal up properly? I was thinking about a dab of sealer in this area??? Good idea?

    TDC marked up

My valve spring tool is not deep enough for the job, so i am scuppered for today... I will go and get a deeper one tomorrow.

Any tips on removing the rusty brown crud on the inside of the block?

And advice on putting sealer on the head, where it is not so flat?

It would be best to get the block skimmed to get rid of the pitting - however you might get away with it with a dab of instant gasket.

It's best to get the block acid dipped to get rid of the scale in the waterways, but you might be able to shift some of it with kettle descaler. Just don't leave it in too long!

I don't want to actually take the block out of the car... They don't really have kettles over here ( and yes, a good cuppa is very hard to find!) Everyone who boils water seems to have those electric water heaters. (mainly to make instant noodles)
Although i did buy a kettle about a month ago, the missis looked at it like it was something alien... she had never seen one before
Might get my mum to bring some over... she is coming on Friday and definitely knows what a kettle is
Have you ever used instant gasket on a head with success Dave? i have some pretty good stuff i bought, it wasn't cheap and i once used it (i am ashamed to say ) to seal a crack in a steel water pipe that was round the back of the engine, and would have meant taking the engine out or the head off to fix... That was over a year ago, and it's still going strong... Although i understand the head itself gets very hot.
I don't wanna do it twice, and Graham advised me to use the standard/thicker gasket. Thats the safest option, but i wouls like to use the thinner gasket.

Nope, I always do the job properly

You'll have to weigh up the pros and cons, if the only proper solution is to take the block out and you really don't want to do that, then I suppose instant gasket is worth a go.

The cons far outweigh the pros, so i went back to the Toyota shop today and swapped the steel gasket for a OEM one. It's a lot thicker and just looking at it i feel a lot more confident that it will be o.k when its back together

I don't fancy doing the job twice, only to fit the standard head gasket the second time around

    Job Jobbed...

Well it will be as soon as i get around to Jobbing it I might take the head back to the engineering shop and have another 0.5 mil taken off it first. I need to sleep on it first.

Re: Mk1 Escort Almost There... (almost)

I had another 0.5 mil taken off the face of the head today.

The effected area looks a lot better now too.

New valve spring compressor bought... Upto the job not problems!
BUT!! After removing one valve and fitting 1 seal, i decided to stick with the ones that are fitted to the head already as they are a much tighter fit than the "new" ones i have bought. The existing seals are still soft and not hard and the engine wasn't smoking or using oil... So... better the devil you know.

I spent about 2 hours scraping and cleaning the inside of the engine block today, I removed the water pump and housing and using a hose pipe pushed inside the block i got a trusty screw diver and scraped away... You should have seen the rusty shite that came out!!

Old water pump refitted as the one the shop sold me is for a FWD! Rear water housing cleaned and re-fitted, getting there...

That's it for today... Head placed back on the block, it should be fitted and torqued down tomorrow

    Cheers

Car is now back up and running, and seems to run a lot cooler. I am not even sure if the head gasket had gone now. Someone (Barry Bodgit) had used a really thin water pipe (instead of a 15mm) to link the back water outlet on the head back to the water pump. All the rust in the engine had blocked it up so it couldn't flow. The head needed to come off to clean all the rust out, so it wasn't in vain

I don't know what the compression is, but standard is 9.4:1. I think it should be more than 10:1 now, after talking with some guys on a Toyota forum.
