    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Stage Car - DVY

After a busy Saturday, DVY was ready to go hillclimbing

As it was a practice day, there were only 80 cars running and Dave and I arrived early on Sunday to walk the hill - although Dave had seen me there quite a few times, there are some bits of the track you can't spectate on so we took our time and I tried to remember where people normally go off

We had been promised 5 runs but as it was a nice sunny day with no delays we ended up with 6

I'd spent a few hours on Saturday fiddling with starters yet again, but DVY still didn't want to start so we resorted to pushing and after a few runs I parked her near the top of the paddock so I could bump start without any assistance

1st Run and there was not much grip as it was very cold, but a time of 64.82s was a good start and the 2nd Run I improved to 62.63s but was having trouble keeping the rear end under control, even having a twitch through the 4th gear kink up Cedar Straight which is always taken flat out

3rd Run was better again with 61.90s and 2.39s off the line, still not that close to my PB in Fly of 60.31s but given the amount of sideways moments it was pretty good. 4th Run after lunch and a few friends had turned up to watch so I did a bit more drifting to get 62.26s

5th Run trying to keep DVY as tidy as possible saw my best run of the day with 61.66s and the 6th Run was 61.71s

Steve Bailey in his Mk1 was there as usual and he was 0.5s off his PB as well, so I'm hoping with a few more suspension tweaks DVY will be quicker than Fly - Fly is not forgotten but needs a few months of welding before she'll be out again so I'll start the season in DVY

As for Dave in his 1.6 Colt, he couldn't stop smiling he was having so much fun - when we'd walked the hill I said about 75s would be a good time, and his first run was 75.28s followed by 72.57s, 72.70s and 72.11s nice and consistent, getting to the point where he wanted more power and less body roll to go any faster

But some late braking on the 5th run gave a time of 71.32s and the 6th run was 71.49s, a very creditable performance for his first Hillclimb, in fact his first event apart from club autotests

My next event should be in May back at Loton although there are a couple of Sprints at MIRA as well that I might look at. Hopefully by then I will have sorted out a reliable starter set up - tonight I took the gearbox out and the ring gear is badly worn so that will be replaced, then I can just fit the bellhousing and check the starter mesh before modifying the bellhousing to mount the starter in the correct place

Thankyou Gav from the fan club (John, sara, wayne, Pete, Mac, me, guy & Daz!!) for the 4th run - good to see you took me seriously when I said I wouldn't video it unless we had some major drift

one day i'll get good at it

    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Stage Car - DVY

A few weeks ago I decided to enter a Sprint at MIRA on Sat 8th May, so I thought it was about time I put DVY back together

A new ring gear had been fitted by a local engineering shop and I'd also bought some recon clutch plates from WWRS having discovered mine were almost down to the rivets - the recon ones don't line up as perfectly as mine, but I was assured that this isn't a problem so I put them on with the flywheel

With just the b/h fitted to the engine I fitted the starter to check the mesh and marked where it needed to go before modifying the bellhousing to suit, ending up making one mounting hole oval c/w an oval bolt to keep it in the right place (I tried filling the hole with chemical metal and drilling one next to it but when I tried to tap a new thread it all fell out )

So the other Sunday I refitted everything and started her up - she turned over ok but a bit slower than I was hoping, but no strange meshing noises so I was hopeful. Then I pushed the clutch down and changed to first with a crunch and found the wheels were turning merrily whatever I did with the pedal or cable (lucky DVY was still on axle stands)

While she was running I thought I'd have a play with the carbs to see if I could get them sounding smoother and managed to stall the engine. This time she span over very fast and started straight away but with the clutch problem there was nothing to do except take the gearbox out again

Everything in bits again and I found the nose of the starter had sheared off (must have been too close mesh) but no much wrong with the clutch although the release arm and b/h were worn, so I welded some 3mm plate to the release arm to take up the slack in the b/h and also some where the release bearing sits to make that further forwards, removed one new clutch plate and refitted my best old one and stuck everything back together again, this time with a different starter having drilled out the mounting hole to 1/2" giving another 1-2mm of clearance

Fingers crossed this time, she turned over like mad and the clutch was working as intended, I checked the starter and no sign of stress

Saturday night I went for a "gentle" drive and everything was working perfectly, even the carbs sound better now then Monday I had checked the camber and castor again, found the camber was only 1.5 deg so added a bit more

I've also bought some more Avon slicks as last years are practically worn out and this time I've gone for 8.2/20-13 instead of last years 7.0/21-13 so hopefully more grip and even more acceleration but I'll save them until the Loton weekend

    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Stage Car - DVY

    Thanks

I arrived at MIRA nice and early but everyone had to wait outside for an extra 30mins until the track was clear and this meant that it was chaos in the paddock

After a convoy run we were all lined up for scrutineering and by the time I got through I had to go straight out for 1st practice, not really having a chance to get Dvy nice and warm, so had a sensible cruise round learning the track in a time of 65.53 seconds, easily slowest in class

2nd practice, everything warmed up properly this time, got off the line ok (no tyre warming at MIRA), but out of the first long left hander I could tell the back end still had no grip, so eased off a fraction for the next left hander, through the speed trap on the next straight at 94mph, then there was a long right with some cones to stop you cutting it, an open square left made out of cones and a final long left hander to finish, this time with I got 57.66s

There were 3 other cars in my class, a 205 who I hadn't seen before who was going quite slowly, Peter in his CRX who'd got 56.89s in 1st practice, and Dean Maddock in his Mk2 Escort RS2000 who has entered the championship this year and already scored quite a few points in the Classic Ford class - his best practice was 58.61 with 96 through the speed trap

During lunch I wondered whether my rear grip problems were due to the rear slicks being completely worn out - the rubber was now level with the wear marks, so I swapped them front to back, deciding if that didn't work I'd do the last run on the wets

1st Timed Run - really booted it off the line to try and get some heat into the tyres, a lot more stable round the first left hander so I kept it flat through the next to the speed trap, 100 this time, and kept pushing round to the finish in 55.59s - Peter was getting slower with 59.34s but Dean improved to 58.16s still at 96

2nd Timed Run - left the tyres as they were, went sensibly off the line (about 0.1 quicker) kept her pretty much flat out to the speed trap (105 this time ), locked the front a little under braking so just flung her into the right, very nearly collecting a cone on the inside as I was well sideways by now, but she came back nicely for the final 2 corners and I crossed the finish in 54.84s - Peter did 61.53, the 205 59.62 and Dean 57.78, so I got the class win, but still felt I would have been quicker if I had more grip at the back

Next weekend I'm out at Loton, so I'll take my new slicks, hopefully fitted to some 8" rims by then (they look a bit tight on 7's and everyone using Avon's recommend a rim at least as wide as the tyres, so I found some 8x13 Allycats on eBay which I'll collect this week) and I'll take some soft rally slicks and the other springs so I can change everything if needed

good stuff gavin and its shows thinking about things and the set up is as important as being able to lobb the car in and sort it out afterwards, well done on the win

Hey Nick, it's all good thanks. So good, I'm doing it all again in September

Won't be doing much in DMN this year now, sticking to hillclimbs for the old man's series and whatever I can fit in timewise.

    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Stage Car - DVY

    Loton Park Sat 16th May

For me this was just a round of the Loton Park championship, but the event was a round of the HSA so there was a good entry of 10 cars in the Mod Prod class

The forecast was not very promising but the day started dry

1st Practice - I left DVY on last years slicks with the better ones on the back and found there was plenty of grip so had a good run up the hill in 63.21s with DVY feeling a lot more stable than on the Practice Day in March

2nd Practice - There was a brief shower before this run which left the hill damp and greasy with no grip at all so I had a sensible run for 69.36s

1st Timed Run - As the sun was shining now, it was time to fit the new slicks and see if I could break the 60s barrier for the first time. I made a good start (2.35s) and hung on round to the split at Triangle in 23.31s (quicker than Fly's best of 23.40s), drifted a bit out of Triangle and through the left hander at Keepers but got my foot down early and kept her flat up Cedar straight and over the crest, got round Fallow nicely and up to the final corner at Museum, and a final blast over the finish

This year there's a clock just over the finish so there was much cheering when I saw the time of 59.82s

2nd Timed Run - My first run was only good enough for 2nd in class behind a Lotus Elise (59.26s) but enough ahead of Steve's Mk1 (60.56s), so I went for it again, got a good start (2.33s) and was even quicker to Triangle (23.24s), kept her nice and tidy round the next 2 bends and up the straight, but possibly braked slightly early into Fallow and crossed the line in 59.95s, slightly disappointed but at least it showed the previous run wasn't a fluke

The Lotus and Steve both went a little slower as well, so I was still 2nd in Class

Also out was Stuart Stelling in his lovely Beige Mk2 RS2000, running consistent 63s runs on Dunlop X22's. After seeing me fit some new Avon Slicks and go a lot quicker, he was curious to see how much difference they made, so he fitted my old slicks for the final run and was happy with how the car felt except for a slight bit of understeer and did a 64s

The 2 stunning pics below were taken by Craig Cooper who always comes along to help out Stuart - the pics are taken at Museum, a hairpin left just over a crest and are very interesting as it doesn't feel like DVY's at that angle inside the car

The couple of pics I have of Fly round this corner just show a lot of drifting but maybe they're taken a bit further on

So after a very good day, it was time to load up and head off to Dave's for the night before the Mid Speed round on Sunday

    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Stage Car - DVY

    Loton Park Sun 17th May

Sunday started off dry but heavy showers were forecast so it was destined to be an interesting day. There were 11 of us in the class, Steve, Stuart and myself, together Karl Stevens' Mk2, a couple of 205's, an MR2, a Lotus Elise (a different one to Sat) and Mid Speed contenders Peter in his CRX, Sarah Bosworth in her Lotus Elise and Tony Hart in his very quick Renault 5 Turbo who beat me frequently last year and has already scored 3 class wins and broke the Class record at Croft at Easter

1st Practice - I thought I'd try and get a quick one in to start the day off well while the track was dry, and 61.17s was a lot quicker than the rest, Tony trying to learn the track having only been there once before in the wet and Karl trying out some new Avon slicks - 8.2" on the front and massive 10" on the rear - and some new HiSpec 6 pot front brakes which were locking up a lot

I was also having a bit of trouble with the fronts locking under braking so I adjusted the bias a couple of turns before the next run

2nd Practice - By this time there had been a long heavy shower but luckily we had an early lunch break for the local Church Service and the track was drying well with only a few damp patches left as we lined up for this run. Worried that it might stay like this all day, I had a bit of a go to see how much grip there was and got 64.73s

The sun was out by now but I wasn't sure how long it would last, so before the next run I removed the passenger seat and plumbed in fire extinguisher to save some weight and wound even more brake bias to the rear

1st Timed Run - Off the line pretty well in 2.37s, keeping my foot well away from the clutch when changing up, hung on round the long left hander at Loggerheads, put 2 wheels on the grass on the right to get a better line into the next left onto the straight 2 Triangle, which unsettled DVY slightly and as I came round Triangle I wasn't sure that I was any quicker than Saturday so I decided to try a bit harder up the hill - after getting round Keepers, up into 3rd then 4th just before the kink on Cedar straight, I kept her flat over the crest 100m before the open HpL at Fallow and only braking at the 50m board, by this time the shift light was on in 4th

I thought for a moment I'd left it too late as everything locked up and twitched both ways under braking (the commentator said it was a brave manoeuvre ) but we got round Fallow in 2nd and blasted up to Museum and over the finish flat in 3rd, for an amazing time of 59.36s

When I checked the splits later I had been ahead at Triangle with 23.14s but it was the late braking that made all the difference

Tony had gone up in front of me and did an impressive 59.57s on what was only his 2nd dry run at Loton, so I just had to wait and see what Karl could manage (his best time last year was 59.19s) but he never appeared at the top. When we got back to the paddock, he was there already, having locked the fronts under braking for Triangle and nearly gone straight on into the tyre wall so had taken the short route back to the paddock

2nd Timed Run - By this time the next heavy shower had arrived and everything was soaked and a lot of competitors didn't bother with a second run, Karl was worried about his brakes and Tony decided it was more sensible to head home and even Sarah said we were "daft" as Stuart, Steve and myself lined up in our Escorts to entertain the crowds, along with the MR2 for the last run, Stuart and myself still on slicks while Steve had fitted his A048's

Trying to be sensible, we all still had some big slides, I nearly went straight on at Triangle with everything locked up, just managing to stop at the last minute, find 1st and head off up the hill, the 3 of us set similar times of 79s

So a cracking day and maximum points for the championship

Meanwhile Dave was out on his first proper Hillclimb in his 1600cc Colt, finishing very well in 4th behind a lot more powerful cars (the Roadgoing Class is up to 2000cc and allows quite serious engine mods), not having any worries about the weather as he drives the Colt every day

And finally the in car video from both days, with a proper mount this year

Looks like doing the back-to-back weekend appears to pay off for the MidSpeed round on the Sunday. Well done on the very rapid time. Did you see the S2000 that went off at Museum? Ouch.

It gave me a head start on the Sunday, unfortunately the next Mid Speed round there is on a Saturday

It didn't work for the S2000 though - he won the class on Sat but went straight on at Museum into the tyre wall on the second run - it looked just cosmetic but there was some extra camber one side so he headed home

Yes I'll be there, be good to see you out again

Just got to change the axle before then so I won't run out of steam down the pit straight as they're running the long course both days

    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Stage Car - DVY

Pembrey Summer Sprint Weekend 5th & 6th June

It certainly didn't feel like summer when I arrived at Pembrey last weekend but at least it wasn't raining

This year they were running 1.5 laps both days with only one practice run so there wasn't much time to relearn the track

Sat practice - As the track was dry I went out on the rally slicks and set a respectable 130.52s, not far off last year's PB of 129.78s, the longer gearing definitely helping down the pit straight

Sat 1st Timed Run - After getting a tow start from Matt Hillam when the starter went clonk , and a brief shower that left some damp patches on the track, I was ready to go. I started off sensibly but knowing this might be the driest run of the day, pushed a little too hard round the long left hander by the paddock and had a big moment when the back stepped out suddenly and then went the other way (Glen got most of this on video ) but managed to keep pushing for the rest of the track to get 130.08s so I was happy with that. The only other car in class (a 2.0 Mk1 Golf) was a few seconds back on 135.41s

Sat 2nd Timed Run - I fitted the spare starter and everything was working properly again, but during lunch it had started raining steadily, so it was onto the wets. While queueing up for the start, there was a strange intermittent rattling / grinding noise coming from DVY, which I discovered was the fan. Didn't have time to do anything but with the cold weather it stayed cool enough. I had a steady first lap, trying to work out how much grip there was, braked far too early for the hairpin at the end of the pit straight, but pushed a bit harder on the second lap and got 141.46s

Windy and Matt were out in the Rally Car class along with the familiar 2.3 Cossie powered Mk1 Escort of Mike Griffiths.
On the first runs, Matt did an impressive 122.84s while Windy and Mike went 7s or 8s slower than their practice times, leading to questions over the timing equipment. After talking to the CoC and Matt's generous agreement, they were both allowed re-runs, Windy getting 123.55s and Mike just squeezing into the lead with 122.68s. This was enough for the class win after the rain arrived.

After a sleepless night in the tent due to the constant rain(but dry and warm at least), I had a quick look at the fan which had slipped off the spindle, so I put it back on and tightened up the spindle screw as much as possible and hoped it would last the day.

Sunday practice - It was still raining so I went out again for another sensible lap, tried to brake later for the hairpin, but it was too late and I went straight on, luckily onto a large run off area, before getting back on track with a time of 138.43s

Sunday 1st Timed Run - The rain had finally stopped and it was probably dry enough for slicks, but not wanting to chance it I left the wets on and had a clean run to 132.00s. The Golf was back on 138.17s and there was also a 205 in my class who'd cut out over the finish and wouldn't restart - he got 148.66s

Sunday 2nd Timed Run - The sun was out and it was actually warm, so the slicks were on and it was time to see how fast I could go. I managed to get a good run, getting most of the corners about right including Honda which leads onto the pit straight, and finished with a time of 125.24s

The Golf did 129.13s and the 205 didn't make it out

In the Rally Car class Windy had set some amazing times in the wet - 130.64s in practice, but in the Timed Runs could only manage 124.21s

Matt and Mike were flying again, but Matt lost out again by a fraction setting 121.37s to Mike's 121.19s

Next event is a rally at Caerwent for the first time in a couple of weeks

    Re: GavinR's Mk2 Stage Car - DVY

    Midsummer Caerwent Sun 21st June

After a few late nights, Dvy was back to rally car spec

Cath was co-driving again and arrived on Sat in time for us to drive Dvy to scrutineering (its only 10 miles) which was passed without any problems so we signed on and got the roadbook, so we could have a good look at the stage maps that night - I'd never been there before and although Cath had done a few Endurance Rallies round Caerwent that was off OS maps. The stages were all 10-11 miles with no lapping - Caerwent is an old military munitions dump so there are a lot of roads in a small area

Sunday we arrived early to get a good spot in the crowded service area and snoozed for an hour before getting ready for the start

Stage 1 - I'd decided to start off on some old Matador slicks as the first time round I was just being sensible, but these did not work that well, locking up frequently under braking, but we got round without any problems, keeping away from all the kerbs and not being caught by the car behind

Stage 2 - A repeat of Stage 1 but I swapped to the medium and soft Hankooks and Dvy felt a lot better, more stable under braking, and our time was 31s quicker

Stage 3 - I wasn't sure if the rear tyres would last the day, so I bought a couple more off Steve Harkness Tyres and put them in the van ready for later. I was trying a bit harder now, getting the feel of the place, but braked too late into a T-right, sliding to a halt about a foot before the kerb straight on, so had to back it out before carrying on. Then with 3 miles to go we went across a short section of gravel, back onto tarmac with a couple of wiggles, arriving at a hairpin slot right a bit fast, so I tweaked the handbrake and we drifted gently sideways into the kerb on the outside - instant rear puncture
We made it out on the remains of the tyres, losing about a minute in the process, but no other damage was done and we fitted one of the new tyres in service

Stage 4 - A repeat of Stage 3 and everything went well, I didn't touch the handbrake once and avoided all the kerbs. After this Stage we were lying 32nd and 11th in class out of the 100 or so cars that started

Stage 5 - I woke up a bit for this one, remembering most of the sections by now, except for one bit I remembered too well, previously we had done 90 left, 100yds slot 90 left, this time it was 90 left, 200yds slot 90 left, so when I turned left after 100yds I was confronted by a couple of no entry signs and some tape, with Cath shouting Not that one, the next one! but I was quickly back on track and we set a decent time, moving up to 28th

Stage 6 - A repeat of Stage 5 and I went the right way this time, going 9s quicker with 15th quickest time for the stage, up to 26th now and 9th in class

Stage 7 - The last one of the day and we wanted to try and make up a couple more places, but half way through I came out of a corner and the engine started misfiring, switching to the second fuel pump didn't help so we did the last 5 miles on 3 cylinders, losing about 1m 30s this time
Back in service I removed the plug leads to see which cylinder wasn't firing and one came off in my hand, leaving the metal tube on the spark plug, so that explained the problem

A few more cars retired on the last stage, so we didn't lose any places, finishing 26th overall and 7th in class, might have been 20th without the problems, but we were still happy and had a very enjoyable day and plan to go back there again when we can

Next event is Shelsley Walsh on Sat 4th July, assuming I've sorted out some new ignition leads by then (I haven't managed to find my old set yet and my attempts to repair the broken one have not been successful) - unfortunately Dvy runs a coil off a Peugeot/Citroen which has different connectors to most so they have to be specially made, the current set were done by Magnecor in 1998, but I'm sure it'll be ok
