What rev counter are you trying to use? Normally if its an old style tach that got its signal from the points then I fix is sometimes to run that blue wire through a relay coil and then to the tach input - other wires to tach are normally 12v ign live and a good chassis earth. There are signal conditioning 'boxes' that replicate the above - Emerald do one.

If it has a wire for the rev counter...presumably you connect this to the rev counter ?

Or can you explain the problem better ?

A tacho marked on the face with letters rvc should work withe MBE if it's marked RVI it won't as that's for points style ign system. If your particular on type of rev counter used the likes of mgb/ triumph dolomite will work. An old RVI can be converted as stated to work.
