Due to some damage previously I have just rebuilt my Quaife HD SC Type 9 gearbox. New baulk rings, blocker bars, bearings and seals.
Initially it all sounded fine when idling in the shed but half way through a recent tarmac rally it started to make a loud rumble when idling. It did this also just before the recent rebuild. If I press the clutch in the noise stops. Sounds like it is coming from the front area of the maincase but is hard to pinpoint.
To me it seems like either the large bearing on the input shaft or the release bearing on the end of the concentric clutch slave. I am leaning more towards the latter.
Plenty of oil in the box. Release bearing was not new but was in great condition at time of rebuild. I DO NOT use the rubber covered spring that sits on the slave behind the release bearing as it was too hard to install (pushed the release bearing off the slave when reinstalling the gearbox). Maybe this is part of my issue as the release bearing is not 100% tight against the clutch fingers but then is it supposed to be? Having it pushing against the clutch fingers means it is spinning all the time (at 8000rpm!!).
Thoughts on the noise?
