New to forum and New mk1 escort Cosworth owner :)

    Hello everyone!
Move just bought a half finished mk1 escort project! Car is in very very good condition never been welded no rust! Been stored for over 30 years!
Its got a cage in it and a 6 link axle, I’m not massively clued up on them by any means but seems a good deal!

The rear suspension Sion set up is confusing me it’s got the 6 link watts set up, but it has two sets of springs? One set is on the turret bilstein cool over and the other set are at an angle?
Ive never seen anything similar or a reason to have 2?

Odd add a picture but I’ve no idea how lol!

    Thanks in adance!

Not at the moment, but it seems a strange set up. As it also has been turreted with bilstein cool overs. Then the two other springs and dampers.
than it has the 6 link set up as well.

It may be my eyes deceiving me, but that doesn't look like an Atlas either.

No It isn’t it’s off a scimitar, but I’ve read up on them and they are still widely used and everything I read say they are bullet proof!

Apologies if this is a dumb question but have you asked the previous owner?
Can't really see what the angled ones are achieving at such an acute angle!
    Highly bizarre

The rear is bizarre in several ways, it is as though the previous owner has gone a bit OTT. double callipers on the rear ?? with vents and only M16 callipers on the front also the seirra callipers may not bleed very well swap them over so the bleed nipples face up. Also not sure what the second springs/dampers are for though.

Everything looks to be very over engineered which is isn't such a bad thing but that rear axle setup must weigh a ton. Scimitar/salisbury axles are supposed to be heavy to start let alone with all that kit on it.

The Scimitar axle is the 4HA which was also fitted to some Jaguars of the late 60's early 70's. It was a popular conversion for RWD Rally cars of period. There was a massive selection of ratios available right down to some very low ones as the axle was also fitted to some dump trucks that were used on building sites.

From memory the hubs were a taper fit onto the halfshafts and if they were n't torqued up correctly the hub would come loose and knacker the pair of them. A lot of competitors discarded them because of their weight in favour of the more expensive Atlas.

Overly engineered....and badly engineered. As you say those Sierra calipers will never bleed at almost upside down and almost looks worse with rigid pipes going to them ? I'd guess maybe someone has thought they need 2 calipers, one for normal brakes and another for hydraulic handbrake ?

Lots of nice work done to it though, just poor choices/design. In case it was some sort of endurance machine, which has some redundancy built in in case of failures ?
