    Hammers, which ones

Now i like a good hammer, years of battering various bits of aircraft into place, have given me a love of hammers.

However i need to branch out into the more delicate and dare i say it specialised forms of hammer.

I have a french car (i can hear the boos already) that needs some dents taken out, and rather than just go for the filler approach, i thought i would practice taking some dents out of it first and then if i feck it up, filler it .

So what would you guys recommend, i have spotted these so far.

Any help guys would be appreciated

    Re: Hammers, which ones

I know if I had ones with changeable heads I would just lose the heads.
I would go for the others, but personally prefer wooden handles, no real reason why though.

Ah good point, i am very adept at losing tools in the garage, thankfully not lost anything at work.........yet.

Just wondering now if the range of heads and dollys would be enough?? Still as i haven't got any any more clue than what i have read in a haynes book of body work, it probably wouldn't matter

    Re: Hammers, which ones

I am obviously more experienced than you, but only because I actually have some
I've not really any more idea about how to use them.
I would say that if there is a job you are doing where none of those dollies suit, you just use summat else. A piece of bar, lump hammer head etc. Just make it up.

    Re: Hammers, which ones

i have admired your range of hammers (carefully placed in a few of your pics) for a quite a while
I'm kind of going for the thump it till it looks right, a method i hope will yield some results, whether the results are good or not, will be debatable .

must say i agree with dave, i have quite a few hammers, some with steel shafts, nylon and others composite, but the wooden ones feel best in use, dunno why though......

    Re: Hammers, which ones

I have read this thread and unbelievably i can offer advice on this. I saw a youtube vid of this Australian bloke removing dents. Check and you'll find it. He used the dollys that were roughly the same profile as the panel and then a thing called a slap stick to remove the dents. This wasn't a hammer but a flat piece of metal about the wirdth of a hammer that was angled slightly to make a raised handle. The theory is that when knocking out dents you tap around the dent where the metal has warped and NOT the dent itself. This tool allowed him to tap both side of the dent unlike a hammer which taps in one spot. So with the dolly inside the panel (under the pushed in bit of metal) and the stick on the outside it's relatively easy to form the metal back into place. I almost want a dent so i can have a go!

What you need is a set of these bad boys Click. They are called shrinking slappers but if you are going to search the net for slappers let us know if you find something interesting.
