Pinto Turbo Fisher Fury for sale or swap

    Hi Chaps

For sale is my Fisher Fury Spyder, running with a turbocharged pinto engine. I will consider a part exchange for a classic Subaru STi – see further details later in this advert!

First off, I will try to avoid too many 'nostalgic' comments and keep this description as factual as possible, but if I do lapse on occasional, I apologise! I really never thought I would sell this car! However, the time has come to part with it, mainly because of the racing I now do, I am just not using it enough!

In addition to the description below, there is a nice two page spread in PPC (Practical Performance Car) issue 39, July 2007 which shows the car quite nicely and in particular the engine which is the most 'unique' aspect of the car.

The car runs a pinto turbo engine running at either 7 psi, which is how I run it most of the time or 11 psi when I want a bit more power! I toyed with putting an R1 engine in there for a long time (even had one in the garage) but I couldn’t bring myself to do it in the end. I love the torque of a car engine (I do get the whole bike engine piece as I race a Fireblade powered car) but wanted the power to have some real punch, which is why I installed this turbo engine. I am pleased that I did as this car now has truly epic performance. Its not mad power numbers and the chassis set-up puts it down on the road in a very impressive way. The torque is staggering meaning that overtaking just requires a prod of the throttle and no gear change! At 7 psi it has 152 RWHP and at 11 psi it has 170 RWHP. The car was on a rolling road so these figures are 100% genuine. I have the printout to prove. It also fuels correctly on either boost setting and has no lean spots anywhere through the revs.

The engine - Its pretty much a complete Ford Cosworth bottom end with cossie pistons and rods but retaining a pinto crank which is plenty man enough for much bigger power figures than I could ever see me running! It has an alloy sump and high pressure oil pump. The head is a big valve pinto head with the usual sort of spec/components used including double springs etc. I have never seen any markings on the cam so it is of unknown origin but is not ‘Himalayan’ in profile as with forced induction you don’t want (need) high lift long duration cams. Overall compression is around 8:1 which still makes it driveable ‘off boost’!

The turbo is a T3 on a pinto Janspeed manifold (Hens teeth are easier to get hold of). It runs with a front mounted alloy intercooler and alloy and Samco pipe work. The turbo force feeds a pair of sealed twin 45 Dellorto carbs (can’t beat the induction noise) which in turn are fed by a high pressure fuel injection loop (cosworth pump) and a rising rate fuel pressure valve which increases fuelling to the carbs as the boost rises. Management is from an escort RS turbo ECU which controls ignition advance/retard dependant on boost pressure. As it’s a small turbo, it spools up very quickly producing usable boost from 1800 rpm upwards and there is little discernable lag. Also, with such a light car, it pulls well off boost anyway! It has a bailey dump valve although I have a re-circulating bosh one should the buyer prefer. The car has Omex sequential shift lights and it also has a rev limiter as well. For safety, this is set at 6500 rpm. In reality, with the way the shift lights are set and the low down torque, I never see the north side of 6k revs as there is no need. It also has that lovely muted turbo burble and can be induced to ‘pop and bang’ in an almost ‘provocative’ way as you pass through the villages on a blat! The noise really is quite intoxicating!

The car itself - It’s a standard Fisher Fury Spyder with a Le Mans bonnet and aero screen. It runs a live axle with a 3.89 differential. I have an RS2000 live axle with a 3.54 Diff which the buyer can purchase separately should they wish. Between the engine and axle is a type 9 box with a short shift kit and a heavy duty clutch. It has four pot Willwoods up-front and will still take 13 inch wheels for track use and if ‘un-sprung’ weight is important. It will be supplied with either 15 inch Oz alloys with good Toyo T1R’s as per the pictures or with either 14 inch minilights with used AO32 tyres or last option with13 inch Ford Laser alloys with new AO32 tyres. The other wheels and tyres are available to the buyer by separate negotiation. It has a full set of white faced dials and a separate boost gauge. It has leather or suede Mountney wheel, the buyer which I will include FOC for the new buyer to upgrade the rear brakes should they wish. I never bothered as the drums were fine. In fact, with the bias bar on the peddle box, I had very little brake effort on the rear with a heavy front end bias which suits my driving style.

The car/engine has been exceptionally ‘cosseted’ and has always been warmed and cooled correctly and is only run with Valvoline Racing Oil. The oil and filter have been changed every few hundred miles. It’s always also run on high octane fuel to prevent any hint of detonation.

The car is a used car. It has stone chips across the whole of the front of the car and down the side pods. However, it does present itself well although I was planning to re-site the turbo and fill in some of the holes in the bonnet. Aesthetically it was my intention to have the bonnet re-sprayed this coming spring to ‘freshen’ it up!

All in all, the car is in great shape, attracts a lot of interest at shows etc and is just that bit different! Even long motorway distances are ‘reasonably’ comfortable tucked down in the seat the airflow from the aero screen is just over my head and ‘tickling’ it along in fifth at 70-80 mph it returns quite respectable fuel economy.

I am after what I think is a very realistic £5,800. I am not inclined to take offers on this. I think that if the car doesn’t sell at that price, I’ll keep it! Broken it would be worth quite a lot more, but breaking it would really be a shame!

I will be happy to consider a part exchange deal with a Classic Subaru STi, R or RA or special edition, 2 door etc. Happy for a small cash adjustment from me for an exceptional or unusual Scooby! I’m after a standard performance car not the sort that has ram raided Halfords! My car is very realistically priced/valued and I would expect the Subaru to be valued in a similar way.

If interested, call me (Harvey) for a chat! I’ve probably missed loads so any question, please call 07880 701554.
