Cylinder head temperature <> water temperature

Graham has taught me that my blacktop 2.0L Zetec does not have a traditional water temperature sensor but an cylinder head temperature sensor. http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1368602

Why in the first place did Ford make this change?

I am going to fit an after market ECU, so this ECU needs to deal with these different values, or I have to fit a traditional water temperature sensor.
Since I am building a kitcar using this engine, I have all the freedom in the world. Wouldn't it be cool to show this temperature!
What range of temperature can I expect? 0 - 230 *Celcius?
    What is normal operating temperature?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

not quite correct, they have both, the engine ecu looks at the coolant temp sensor to control running, the head temp sensor merely provides the ecu with addition info for engine protection, for instance, if the water pump failed or all the coolant leaked out, the coolant temp sensor would not relay an overheat situation, but the head temp sensor would.

from your perspective you need only worry about a coolant temp sensor

    Hi Graham,
Thanks again for your answer. So it is protection only.

In my case, there is no water coolent sensor. I have to buy and fit one, probably in the thermostat housing.
But still I am interested in the temperature range. Everybody has a water temperature gauge, some people also have an oil temp gauge. Nobody has an cylinder head temperature gauge!

the thermostat housing is the correct place for a water temp gauge. most engines do not have the facility for a head temp gauge, you can only have one in a engine designed to have one, without a lot of research and testing you wont know what temp is ok or not. most late fords have them, but i dont know about other makes of car
