I revamped the mechanism on my Mk1 Cortina. It might be the same (or similar enough) to the Mk1 Escort to give you some ideas.
This is a Mk4 Golf wiper. Brand new on eBay - mine was about £25. The motor mounts to the wiper mechanism using the same mounting plate, but I needed to drill all 3 holes again. Here's the tricky bit - you need the holes drilled in exactly the right place so that the wiper parks in the right place. This took quite a bit of fiddling, measuring etc.
With the motor taken care of I also need to pay attention to the linkage. This is the linkage mecahanism from the Cortina. its 50+ years old and the joints are all loose and wobbly.
I used JB weld to get the mountings bosses to stay firm in place.
this is the rotor arm from the original Ford motor. with a bit of tiling its mounted on the Golf motor.
Here you can see the 3 new holes drilled for mounting the Golf motor. (smaller holes are the new ones).
using new shiny bits from the owners club its mounted back on the car.
This is a work in progress. At this stage I can wire it up temporarily to a battery and (depending on the terminals of the motor used) I can get all 3 speeds and intermittent. The wipers swing perfectly now. Before, the wiper used to stop at the top, pause for a moment, then swing back down. This was due to the slop in the linkage - I guess all old Fords suffer from this, but my Cortina now wipes like a modern car!
What's left to do is wire it up properly to a switch, but that should not be too hard. Hope this helps you out.
Hi I'm needing the spivit/SPINDLE washers and nuts that you posted a picture of with the words from the owner's club, could you please give me the contact details of where you sought them from? Thank you
