Re: welding on and off days
Welding is a skill that takes years to master and even good welders have bad days. Best advice is make sure you are in a comfortable position and if it doesn’t go to plan, chuck the whip or sort it with the grinder
Practice is the key

yeah been there done that, these days i adjust my technique as much as the machine, cheaper machines tend to be more temperamental, voltage in the national grid can vary a bit from day to day, that probably makes a bit of a difference too, as no doubt does temperature and humidity

I know what you mean. On a bad day I just walk away. I get this when I'm using TIG and MIG.

Temperature makes a massive difference when welding and so does your attitude towards it... put the gun down and walk away as we just get more frustrated...we all have a off day

worth checking all connections tight too - plug / fuse and if your competent then check the contactor inside too.

Drafts and wind can be a problem, they can blow your shield gas away from the welding pool, resulting in a bad weld.
I usually save critical welds for first thing in the morning too, when I'm a bit fresher.
