Ford Taunus TC2 - now Trackday car

    Hello peeps,

I want to let you know I have dyslexia so if my sentence structure sucks then you guys and gals know why that is. (because some times peeps think i can't write. And I hate peeps that laugh about my writing, its hard enough)
I will try to let somebody rewrite my stuff here
So.. I wanted to show off my race car to everybody here and keep a sort of history of everthing for myself to.
And because I live in belgium not alot of peeps gonne see this car or me.

I have a sort of car history on my site
www.autosport.arieke.be but that is in dutch so you won't have a clue of what I write.

    So a couple of years back (autom 2007) I bought a 2-door 1979 Ford Taunus 1.6 with a crappy 70hp engine.

After alot of done work in my car.

like painting wheels, painting the whole car

    and stickering

We had alot of problems to make it fit nice on my car. It didn't work so we took them off and spray-painted it!!!

    Fitting a 32/36 carb

Fitting a new cam (kent cam Fast road)

The last new thing I got are ... and hope to get more advance with my Fast Road Cam

    twin dellorto's!!!

But there is alot of other stuff done like putting a tacho in my car (didn't have it standard), welding my diff, made a semi custum exhaust (spaghetti wasn’t on it when I bought it), making a close ratio steering (like escorts 2:1 steering)

Putting the battery, water for windows, and a aluminium fuel tank in the boot of the car.

The dent in my car is from the first race I did that year
and no it isn’t a 1.3 that year I had only a standard engine and the last race I had a Fast Road cam in it (didn't drive with dellorto's yet). and it was slow

So I raced with this car 3 times in 2008.

But in 2009 I will race 7 time and maybe same track days on circuit of Zolder.

If peeps are intressed you are all welcome to come and watch me on the following days (this is all in Belgium haha...):

    • Saturday 28 februari 2009 Maasmechelen;

      Sunday 26 april 2009 Arendonk;

      Sunday 31 mei 2009 Arendonk;

      Saturday 11 juli 2009 Maasmechelen;

      Sunday 23 augustus 2009 Arendonk;

      Saturday 19 september 2009 Maasmechelen;

      Saturday 17 oktober 2009 Maasmechelen.

    Building a 2.1 Pinto engine

The car is at the moment slow(errrrrrr). So it needs more power. And I could only use the engines that were originally made for the car. So I’m stuck with a pinto or a 2.3 essex engine.
A essex would be better? Maybe? But I got a 205 pinto block from 89 lying in my woodshed. So yes, it’s going to be a pinto.

So it’s now 2009 and I started building (ordering the pieces). We will start building the engine on the 8 of february 2009. One of my friends will help building the engine as a school project so ...

    So I ordered these parts:

KENT CAMS ADJUSTABLE ALLOY CAM PULLEY
KENT CAMS SUPERSPORTS R CAMSHAFT KIT (HT1)
    INLET VALVE 1.750" (44.5mm)
    EXHAUST VALVE 1.500" (38.1mm)

    ACCRALITE FORGED PISTON 94mm
FARNDON EN24V STEEL H SECTION CON ROD, 5.060": COSWORTH YB + ARP bolts
    HIGH PRESSURE/HIGH CAPACITY OIL PUMP
FLYWHEEL BOLT CAP HEAD M10x1x30: COSWORTH YB
    WEBERS 45 (x2)
INLET MANIFOLD SOHC PINTO 2xDCOE 1.15"
PIPERCROSS KK600 CARBURETTOR BASE PLATE: 2xDCO/SP
PIPERCROSS KK600 DUAL AIR FILTER ELEMENT: 40mm HIGH
AP RACING CLUTCH KIT: SOHC PINTO 215mm
    REV LIMITER

I orderd more stuff, like bearings and seals and so but this stuff is nicer.

I will update this when we start building the engine and afterwards, fitting and racing the engine (with the car). Or just when I change some stuff or ...

    Hope you'll like it!!!

    Arendonk 28 september!!!

So after my first race (19 juli 2008)

I got alot of advice from people there. (I raced with standard car with cage. Nothing more.)

We put the battery in the back of the car, a aluminium fuel tank with a electric fuel pump.

And finally i got a better suspension. adjustable spax suspesion, we cut a bit of the rear springs so the rear of the car is a bit more to the ground.

    We lighted the bonnet.

Friends of mine helped out with this part

Everybody told me you NEED LSD!!!

So, i have more the one axles lying around (think atlas axle)

So I got somebody to weld the diff. And believe me its alot better with this car. The first race i had diffeculties with the car straight, but now it drives alot better and loads of grip (it work with the 1600 S pinto engine 90hp)

    @ Arendonk!!

They had remade the track (evening it out) and dropped loads of water of the sand. So it was a mudd pool.

(the voice is the friend with blond hair, hes working on a rallycross car since august 2007 and hasn't yet)

So check out the Races (all HD)

I did finish this race, my exhaust came lose so we needed to mend it. We did ...

Finally, and exhaust came lose again But i finished

Next update will be when i get all the parts for my engine.

    Re: Other ratio Steer colum

    After driving on arendonk,

I have experienced that I must turn alot on my steering wheel. Thus I was looking for a short ratio steering stuff. Escort have this, Unfortunate the one from a escort didn't fit in my Taunus.

    Therefore no short ratio steering?
After looking around we have found something. A piece that your put between your steering colum and the steeringwheel.

After many machining we fitted the stupid thing in its place. The steeringwheel ain't complete center but that won't be a big problem.

    Here some pics

This is the standard steering colum

Its the blue thing. I dont know the name in english. the standard ratio is 1:1 now it its 2:1 I don't have servo so i think its loads harder for turning that wheel.

here its fitted in my Taunus,

The 9th of february we should start building the 2.1 full race specs pinto engine for this taunus. Still looking for a bigger radiator for the race engine. Maybe a polo rad or the golf radiator, some say a 240 volvo rad will be good.

    Hehey! Nice Taunus!
I hope you will finally handle with it and kick some opponents!
Btw, you've fitted SPAX shocks.. and how are they? Are they worth anything? I'm building a '72 Taunus TC1 for drifting so I should care about suspension))

    Re: Ford Taunus TC2 Rallycross

Me? Actually if it wasn't a question directed to me, I'm sorry and stuff and stuff.. But if it is for me, then: I'm going for Nissan 200SX IRS including subframe and partly the 200SX floor to fit properly. I can't decide what to do with the front, I can build a custom front suspension with A-arms like GT40 used, but it'd take time and I don't want to lose this season.. But I'm also going for 200SX hubs on the front to keep the 5x114.3 wheels everywhere.
    Sorry for stealing your thread.

At the moment they are better then i expected. On the front hard and loser on the rear. Had the car setup hard all around and had less grip so, we set the spax on the rear a bit softer and way better.

5 link? I think its now 4 link? The 2 that hold the diff box? And the spax connected to the trunk and the 2 other, that connect my rear end to the car.

    Whats 5 link?

I will write this weekend a status on the pinto 2.1 engine build. The people that are doing the engine, are now 2 weeks busy on my engine. Thay really want to install a big as pinto exhaust manifold. But funds are runny low.

(they said, we will install it and you can pay us over 2 months when my funds are a bit back. verry nice actually)

It goes good with hard shocks and not so hard springs when rallying, all jumpings become pretty smooth!
Hehe, by the way, if your common guys are crazy enough, you can swap the cylinder head with Cossie's one. Yeah, the turbo cossie's one. It shouldn't be a problem to bolt it on and build a good 16 valve N/A setup, for example, on 2 twin webers.. but you should care about compression ratio as on every turbo engine it is low for good N/A tuning... well, as I said, as they are crazy enough to deal with such way of projects..

    Re: Ford Taunus TC2 Rallycross

Have a question, hope that somebody will answer. I have install a BMW E34 2500 radiator. It fits it works, but there is NO room for a altinator.

So Can I Race on my battery?

    I have a 50Ah / 440A battery.

    What electrics on my car?

Rev limit, fuel pump, Tacho, watertemp gauge, oil temp gauge, oil presure gauge, fan for engine, fan inside. Car at full power, screen whipers.

The engine works for 40 min or so ( 30 min standing around warming up and 4 min full throttle.

Would my battery last that long?

No 16V? Ah.. okay, my bad.
Emm.. I'd say for me, I hate Panhard rods.. they turn differently..
Probably you can move the alternator to another place, racing on a batter isn't good. You should have alternator..

A friend of mine is a mechanic from historic le mans race team. He advised me that i get a better panhard. So i came up with a system that i can bolt on an extra panhard rod. So next time i race i can remove it.

With bolting on i can change the strengt from the panhard rod so its adjustibel

He ons said to me, when i started racing and it was a wise answer.

Adjust your old car with new stuff and change it that the new stuff fits on your car.

    Building the engine

    Hello,

i'm doing a big update, been working on my car, the 5 students that should rebuild my whole car but they failed.

    What they did,

    Head,

They ported and flowed the 1600 head, did it to a local shop, to do some machining so the head could use 45mm inlet and 38 outlet valves, and he also installerd bronze valve guides.

Afterwards they adjusted the compression room from the head to 11.5. Thay also installed a HT1 kent (kit) and new camshaft bearings.

    Block,

The bored it out to 93mm pistons, and installed them to.

My standard crank, they sended it to a other shop for balancing, samewise with the flywheel. They flywheel lost some weight. it was 9.1kg and nog its 5.6kg.

So, thats what they did, and thay only had 5 weeks to do that,

What they normally had to do is, Install they engine, put the head on, make a exhaust for my car, put the webers on it and tune the engine, But they didn't

So i did al the hard parts.

My car had a running 1600 eninge and was oke, I got my car back after 5 week, engine in car no head. No gearbox on it, no exhaust, so lots of work still to do.

    Re: Ford Taunus TC2 Rallycross

So I got my car back ...

    Day 1,

Putted my car on a brid, but didnt have much time,

So, i just put some new oil in gearbox and done.

    a nicely done engine, ...

    A 4 speed gearbox from a 2 liter pinto primary shaft is 1 x 23 splines. So a type 9? in a car manuel its a Type B so ...

    Day 2

I did some more work, installed new engine rubbers. A friend of mine helped out so i didnt have to install the gearbox alone. (its fairly heavy ) We mounted they flywheel, with cossy bolts, clutch and pressure plate. And gearbox went in. installed the propshaft and adjusted they gearbox so it works. So thats done,

    Here some pics

    New and old rubbers

    Me pulling bolts on strengt.

    Using my dads torque wrench.

    Day 3

On day three we had a big shitty problem. We mounted they head on the engine, got the belt on and nothing hits (at the moment) engine turns nicely (with wrench on crank)

So that done, we started on the exhaust.
I bouth a Big exhaust, Ashley exhaust manifold: MK2 escort 2.25" bore. The students told my that they will make it fit. But they didn't. They problem we had was ...

    First some pics

Normally there should be a big wing sump but that went wrong so i'm stuck with my origenal sump.

    nice but ...

So the exhaust doesn't fit. My day was a over, didn't touch they car for couple days, they we had a other go. Pics will follow.

    More pics to come. ...

I did, the fucking idiot who put the oil filter on, forgot to place the rubber between the filter and block. If i see that guy i bash him.

    How stupid can you be???

It stopped leaking so that was the problem...

But i cant get the engine to start on the starter motor. (standard starter motor) and i have a CR from 11.5 When i jused the starter with 24V. Then it does 1000 rpm (with no spark plugs) but when the spark plugs in, the engine does (300rpm) But I dont think thats enough to start the engine. I think i need to buy a edge starter engine from burton or so. But not sure ...

I have a little movie from the first time we started the engine (we did it couple more time so, this is the first movie)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj5KakbVgLYYouTube - Taunus Test Rit 1 New.

The engine still needs jetting and more running in. And then the fun can begin.

hope for lots of bhp ...

so, the engine went to stefco for tuning and it died. The guy got the engine to work verry fine, was fast. And it blew up. I have a hole in my block. As big as a euro piece. I never lost that much money, didnt even had that much money. And now al lost.

I will update with pics on saterday.

    My f*cked up 2100 Pinto

Here is the update about my broken engine ....

Somehow the alternator bracket broke off.

This look like pieces from a valve, not sure because, it could be from the piston, i had simelar crap in my air filter, luckelly my webers aren't damaged.

    What a f*cking big crack

Whole that piece is kept at place with the head bolts, I think it will brake off when the head is off the block ...

This crap came all out of the sump, no water on the radiator, but i can see why.

I can tell, the fourth piston is totalled, the block also, I don't feel like taking it apart, when i do, i will post pics ...

That looks nasty. You should take it apart anyhow and try to find out what caused the problem so that hopefully it does not happen again.

My first high power engine broke in spectacular form, the rally car actually went on fire from the oil coming out of the cover and onto the hot exhaust manifold. Turns out I was running too much compression for the pistons in the engine and the piston ring lands broke. Luckily the fire was not too bad and the car got back on the road again quickly. Ilearned a lot from that engine.

    Re: Ford Taunus TC2 Rallycross

So a little update, front axle is done. Rear axle will wait, because i'm not sure of it will cope with the power of the other engine.

old engine (the 115pk efi pinto) (think its also on flywheel)

And pics from the new engine (the rs2000 16v engine with 177hp on flywheel)

This is the old front axle, with saggy springs almost 30 years old.

And here the newer front axle, with new springs and new poly bushes. And if possible a second anti roll bar. But that depends how easy its to fit.

Empty engine but, has to get a repaint in white.

All elektrical wireing is removed from the car, that will be work for a couple weeks. Going to make own stuff, with nice box en lighter.

The front points where the axle is bolted on to.

    Left.

Seems to be still fairly good.

    Right

this side needs rewelding. Hopefully its easy to mend. That will be maybe some work for the weekend.

    Till next update.

    http://www.youtube.com/user/Ariekebe.../0/uOPlAwbEUmc

We Got the RS2000 16v engine in there. (the seller had a dynosheet with 176hp and 205 Nm, Regroved RS2000 cams, Standard bore, twin 48s and custem exhaust ford RWD conversion). So the Tina wil be lots faster used to have the efi engine 115hp?)

We used a BMW rad and mazda fan and it does the job well.

What was done over the winter? The new engine, Custem engine and gearbox mounts, Custom exhaust. 60mm tube with standard box, Front axle rebuild, new uprated springs, all polybush, spax adjusteble dampers, close ratio gearbox and short steering. ratio 2:1.

So this weekend it will be the first race. Friday some testing by a friend at his home. Saterday some testing on the circuit and yes, Sunday. Time to race!!!

    Still to be done,

I want to custum tune the camber on the front axle, we have some idea's but if anyone has any let me know. Want to keep the front axle.

And a lighter flywheel for this engine. Anyone an idea??? Please let me know. Was going to use pinto flywheel but needs redrilled then.
