Mk2 - Speedo cable to Type 9 & Fuel Gauge Wiring

    Hi guys,

Just registered. Bought a 4 door mk2 Escort with a few mods. The speedo cable needs connected to the type 9 box. As the engine bay has been de-cluttered of cables and wiring, the guy I bought it from said it is best to drill a hole in the tunnel and take it through this way. Can you comment please? Is this the best method or is there a better way? Is it a standard mk2 cable I would need for fitment? Does this fit the box?

Also the car has a race fuel cell in the boot with a sendor fitted. I wondered if it was possible to connect this up to the cluster gauge? Or would I need to install an aftermarket gauge. Guessing the standard gauge wires up to the pin connector...Need to get a workshop manual for wiring diagram.

Few other things on the list but they can wait.

    Cheers,
    Allan

Hmmm - if its was so easy to go inside and down tunnel - why didn't he do it? He He He! Seriously though to keep it all inside will need some fairly acute / sharp bends behind the clocks although dropping it through the tunnel adjacent to the firewall would make sense.
It is likely the fuel cell sensor won't be calibrated to the Ford gauge but if you are electronically minded adding / halving resistors could get it functional!

    Thanks Katana,

Yes drilling the tunnel was on the cards. He had it priced by the garage that setup the carbs £300 which I thought seemed a lot! I was wondering what other options there are, like taking a reading off the diff or disc or something but would need calibrated properly. And no, ha I'm not very electrically minded so guess using the cluster fuel gauge is a no go. Someone said I could connect it up and see, no harm done but wasn't so sure.

A set of gauge pods might be the answer! Help hide the crack in the dash.

The sensor is just a basic variable resistor and is a single wire connection to the gauge - the gauge gets its power from the voltage regulator on the back of the clocks, the sender is earthed through the tank metal....... so try connecting it all and see what happens - from faded memory empty resistance is about 40 ohms and full is about 245 ohms - if the sender gives this range it should work !........ maybe LOL!

Haven't come across an aftermarket fuelgauge sensor with the same resistor values as the original item.
Empty resistance is approx. 75 Ohms, full is approx. 12 Ohms.

Thanks fellas! So chances are the sender won't be a match. How difficult is it to change resistance to suit. How do I know what the sender is rated to?

Probably as easy to just get new sender and gauge as matched pair - too many potential combinations out there to try them all.

Burton power do a 90 deg adapter for a speedo drive if that helps any. Or look at god speedos no need for a cable then.

Hi again, so what else do I need to connect up the speedo to the gearbox? Found a similar thread on here which listed the longer cable for type9 on eBay. Wildo mentioned the 90 degree adapter. Is this all? What about the ratio, will it read correctly?

Mk2 - Speedo cable to Type 9 & Fuel Gauge Wiring

There are Speedo cables exactly for this. If you want to route it the normal way you won’t need the 90 deg adapter. I thought wanted to hide the cable ?

And the longer cable is generally recommended for cable through bay whilst using a Pinto - extra length avoids melting cable on ex. manifold. A std length cable should easily reach the g.box if avoiding the bay!

Hi a, yeah I'd like to hide the cable but just wondering if its worth the cost and hassle of drilling the tunnel. Okay think I will just drill the tunnel and use the shorter std cable, keep the bay tidy. Is that the best place to buy on Ebay? That guy had the shorter cables for sale too.

Re: Mk2 - Speedo cable to Type 9 & Fuel Gauge Wiring

    Happy New Year everyone!

I finally got a look under the car, where the speedo cable connects to the box. It is lower down than I thought, not in line with the tunnel. A direct point coming from it would cross above the exhaust then where would you route it? I read that the cable must be straight at the box or it can pop the circlip.

Any idea? What do others do?

Re: Mk2 - Speedo cable to Type 9 & Fuel Gauge Wiring

I have already bought the standard shorter cable for it. Suppose Burton might swop it if I use the longer one and go through the bay, then more cost for the 90 degree adapter. Nothing is simple...

Fitted speedo cable to box last night. I just pushed metal end on to the drive. Circlip is flush to lip on the housing but cable is not exactly tight to the box, bit of play between metal cable end and box. Looks like circlip is on correct as housing is tapered but should this be a tight fit? If so maybe need to get it up on ramps at a garage, get them to look at it.

Just for anyone reading this. The play between cable and gearbox drive is apparently normal - Wiggle room.

Also I found this on Ebay, gizmo to match resistance between fuel gauge and sender. Not cheap! but looks like a good piece of kit! Comes complete with a fully detailed pdf manual to set it up. Will report back once I get it wired up and calibrated.
