Re: 105E ANGLIA 1.6 OHC build
i thought the propshaft off the escort would have been (plug and play) with the 105e but quickly noticed because im running a type3 gearbox 3 inches had to come off the prop .....here is a look
-
Re: 105E ANGLIA 1.6 OHC build
after welding ,grinding , we now have a prop that fits
-
Re: 105E ANGLIA 1.6 OHC build
you cut the prop in the middle? thats a bit scary, cutting at an end is much less likely to give massive vibrations due to out of balence
-
Re: 105E ANGLIA 1.6 OHC build
cheers graham, lol @ scary (dont remind me).........but in respect to that question ,yes ( i cut the middle with good reason)......didnt want to disturb the weights , in the middle is nice and hollow / ...i used the wrap technique to mark the circumference and also marked a reference line down the middle of the shaft to help ensure the weights are in the same location ....then i made a rough cut and used a grinder to meet the circumference marks... ...then joined the both pieces ....hopefully it doesnt feel too shoddy but i think i did my best

Re: 105E ANGLIA 1.6 OHC build
on the left is a standard escort shaft, on the right is my modified (shorter) shaft as im running a type3 gearbox in my 105e
-
Re: 105E ANGLIA 1.6 OHC build
yellow marks the cut area boys ....lets hope i dont get a shaft clobbering , although i did make sure my mig welder was sizzling crispy ......limited shudder if none would be nice

Re: 105E ANGLIA 1.6 OHC build
i think you made a serious mistake cutting in the middle , how do you know its now still strait ? should have ground end welds and cut after pulling the yolk out i think.

Re: 105E ANGLIA 1.6 OHC build
Surely the propshaft will require balancing anyway after modifying. You need to get a dial gauge on the middle of the prop and check the run out is within tolerance. Shorting at one end of the shaft would have been the best option.

He's got a spare there in case

Re: 105E ANGLIA 1.6 OHC build
@ alladdin #i used my eyeballs mate lol ....that is the common method , but i did find a video on youtube with this guru and he showed me a backyard method (simple way) to keep things straight and balance .......before i made the cut, i marked a center line down the middle of the propshaft (full length) ......then i used cartridge paper to wrap the shaft tight and used a black marker to mark the circumference .......note ...i did not try to cut directly on the circumference mark.....i made a rough cut before the circumference mark and then ground around the pipe until there was no black marker visible on both ends (spot on)......before i joined the shaft , i made sure that the( center line marks) i made line up on both pieces ........( the center mark or line) helps you keep the shaft basically as it was before you cut it.......then i welded things together , it might not be a 100% perfect but it shouldnt feel like a mini earthquake by the looks of it !

Re: 105E ANGLIA 1.6 OHC build
@ forest_rallying.....that is true ,but i wanted to cut the shaft without having to re-balance it .......the way i did it shouldnt mess with the factory weight setup ford originally intended ......the middle has zero weights and is nice and hollow .....once the center line marks ( line up) nicely after you cut , tack weld ,weld ,and your shaft should be backyard approved =) lol......as langlia said ,ill find a spare if i dont like how it feels =)

Re: 105E ANGLIA 1.6 OHC build
@ langlia ......i can tell your a nutter like myself mate by that smirk on your smiley face lmaooo #cheers......need this old gal moving

Re: 105E ANGLIA 1.6 OHC build
point taken , i would be gutted if it feels totally wrong but hey , considering i dont have the money to make the machine shop , milton or wilwood richer a little home remedy will do.......thanks on the luck too, ill need it =)......all i used was a hax saw blade, cartridge paper, a black marker, my shit eyes, mig welder, home made grinder out of mini motor, and those YouTube tips lol .....looks good tho and my weld area is flush ,you couldnt tell where i welded if i painted it
