    Plumbing in car heater

    Hi guys,

Needing to fit a heater a original one has been removed including the pipework. My question is plumbing it into the coolant system. I was looking at T-ing it before and after the water pump with a shut off valve but have concerns that the engine may be starved. I don't want to remove cyl head to do work and take it off the usual port which has been removed too. The inlet/outlet would be 15mm so my thinking it would be okay as long as the position of the T is good.

    Others done this?

Teeing before and after the pump won't achieve much - you need hot water from block to heater and return back to pump for re-circ.

Ah okay, back to the drawing board then.

So just to check, where is the outlet for the heater on a 2 litre block? Pretty sure it has been removed.

    Thanks

Mine was out of the inlet manifold into the heater matrix then out of the matrix back to the water pump.
Pretty sure that's the norm... Running twin 48's btw, so no auto choke mechanism or anything like that...

    Hi Rob,

I expected the outlet to be off the cyl head same as my old Chevette. Is it likely that my inlet manifold for the 45's has a water jacket too? There is a plug near the rear. pics below.

    No.
The water outlet comes out of the middle of the inlet manifold below the centre mounting bolt between Number 2 and 3, under the web on your manifold.

The plug you're referring to is a vacuum take off for a servo. My manifold's got 2 vacuum take off points, one at number 1 and one at number 4.

    Thanks Rob,

Wondered if this might be a vacuum. I'll have a look underneath later on.

See here - http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthre...to+overheating - post #11 - seems a sensible alternative if DCOE's fitted and improves block water flow - bonus!

Thanks Katana, I had a quick read over that thread, now even more confused ha. Had a look at the inlet manifold, looks like there is a blanking plug. How do you remove it? Will it be a reverse thread? I'll attach a pic soon.

Is your water pump take off for the heater matrix blanked off too?

I'm not sure, expect so. Where will it be in relation to the water pump? This engine was built about 6 months ago, all new to me! Escorts too. Still trying to upload pic of plug on inlet manifold, need to resize image.

I can't make out what that photo is, the hole does't look big enough for for a water take off. Is it a blind hole? if it goes into the waterway in the head you should be have to poke a piece of wire in to see.

Looking from the front of your engine at the water pump the heater pipe fitting should be to the left hand side of the pulley near the alternator adjusting strap.

Here's a library pic of pump - the heater pipe outlet is obvious - http://www.burtonpower.com/media/cat...Water_Pump.jpg

It would be rare to find DCOE inlet manifolds to have water jackets as its not a performance enhancement - more of a hinderance being cooler air is better! Some Lotus Twin Cams etc. may have had water jacketed inlets but they were for the road where seem as better for winter running!

Sorry, change of subject, needing a pin connector to wire up fuel gauge on instrument cluster plug. Anyone got some spare or know where to get them? Struggling to find them on eBay.

Are you talking std / Sport / Ghia / RS Escort gauges? If so they are fairly bespoke so won't find aftermarket - I found someone willing to split a plug apart to get one connector and wire. You might (if you are handy) make one up from brass or copper sheet and hot-melt glue it into the plug for retention?

Yeah it's the Ghia cluster that has been fitted. Found that out on here, thread with PDF showing the alterations for the connector plug. Perfect detail! Good forum!

Really! Rubbish I thought they would be standard old school ford fitment and still be available. It's just the one I need for the fuel gauge. I'll see if the previous owner has any lying around. Could try and make one up, don't see it being that difficult. Found a device on eBay for matching all senders and gauges, including option to reverse the reading. Not cheap at £50 but like to use original cluster gauge if possible.

Yeah not sure what I was thinking when I said water jacket! So had a look again tonight, small outlet on water pump is piped up as a recirc by the looks of it. Followed pipe, goes round the back of the block to inlet manifold (as per previous pic, upward connection).

All I should need to do is plumb the heater in to the loop, correct?

    Inlet - Inlet manifold
    Outlet - Water pump
