    Rebuilding granny rear calipers

ive just rebuilt a set of granny calipers, the handbrake mechanism works spot on so i didnt dismantle the inside of the piston. when ive wound the piston back in, it goes all the way down then just spins continuously. when i pull the handbrake mechanism the piston moves up then back down when the mechanism is released.is this right? my friend says his calipers when u8sing the handbrake mechanism cause the piston to ratchet out. is this correct or should the piston simply move up then down? any help much appreciated

your calipers are fine, they dont ratchet out like an automatic clutch pedal or handbrake adjuster in a drum. its a different design, the piston has to move in and out otherwise when you let the handbrake off the piston would just stay where it was instead of releasing the pad, ive overhauled stacks of these calipers and they all do what you describe. fit em and dont worry. just line the piston notches up before you fit the pads
