Cosworth rear brakes onto Atlas axle?

Hi, our rally Escort currently has XR3i front brakes at the back, on a wide fully floating Atlas axle. We have a hydraulic handbrake with cable set up (not ideal!).

I'm sure I read somewhere that rear Sierra Cosworth calipers will fit the same brackets that mount our XR3i calipers.

Does anyone know if this is correct, or will we have to fit new mounting brackets?

    Thanks

    Phil

Don't know the exact answer but you may also need to consider which brakes and the offsets to the disk etc. XR3i fronts are vented. Sierra cosworth/ sierra callipers are not. from memeory Sierra saphire 4x4 rears are vented though and are a similar in design to the sierra so the mounting points should be the same but maybe the centre line to the disk may affect where the brackets are mounted etc. You may have to suck and see on this one depending which brakes you go for.

I can measure a calliper for you if want as i have some old ones lying around waiting for my atlas axle build.

A quick measure i get 92mm from centre to centre on 10mm bolts. From memory when i bought my axle it did previously have xr3i calipers fitted so the holes could be the right distance.

That's great, thanks for the information.
Am I right in saying that the 2wd cossie had solid discs, and the 4wd vented?
We run vented discs with the XR3i calipers at the moment, but solid discs will be more than up to the job. Are the cossie discs a straightforward fit.
Maybe we can use the 4wd calipers with our XR3i vented discs?
    Thanks for all your help.

Re: Cosworth rear brakes onto Atlas axle?

Normally with an english axle an i assume with a standard atlas using sierra calipers you use mk3 fiesta or escort mk3 front solid disks. The driveshafts have to be machined slightly to fit into the disk. also i do not think there is a cosworth caliper as such it is just the same as the sierra one (except price).

With a cosworth 4x4 caliper it may be possible to use the the xr3i disc but you will need to check the thickness and also if the diameter is similar. The last issue i can see is getting the centreline of the disc and caliper bracket to work. you may be lucky and they match up or it may need shimming or moving to match.

Having a fully floating may also affect what disc can be used, but escort mk3 one are pretty cheap to buy and try.

Megatron on here has an atlas with vented disks have a read through it may have some info in.

Thanks again wildo, I really appreciate all your help.

Great build Megatron. As with so many build threads on here, I've picked up loads of great ideas and tips.

I'll now start looking for some Sierra calipers etc.

Re: Cosworth rear brakes onto Atlas axle?

From memory, XR3i vented discs are 24mm thick and Cosworth vented discs are 22mm thick
    Solid discs are 10mm thick
XR3i discs have a greater depth than Cosworth vented discs
The Rally Design website is a good reference for disc dimensions

Sierras and Scorpios had rear discs, only the 4x4 Cosworth or all Scorpio estates had vented discs
Both the calipers and mounting brackets are different for vented discs due to the different thicknesses

I have XR3i rear discs and calipers and at some point I'm planning to fit a second set of Cosworth vented calipers to use for a cable handbrake only - the mounting brackets are the same
XR3i calipers have bigger pistons so are more effective

    Thanks
    GavinR
