    Twincam Anti Roll Bar Issue

    Hi everyone,

I have installed at twincam anti roll bar (rix engineering) on my Mk1 escort. The mounts I have used are the weld on 'early typ twincam' from stage1 motorsport.

Looking at the struts, they are significantly far forward in the engine bay (around 2" from where they should be).

Does anyone have any measurements between the bolt holes between the cross member and the weld on anti roll bar, so i can check they are in the right place?

Or am I meant to use a wedge of shims to push the struts back?

Unfortunately, this website will not allow me to upload photos

    Many thanks

    Jamie

A twin cam roll bar by design will pull the struts forward. I am away so cannot measure but they do look a little bit odd at first. You can adjust by packing large washers on the roll bar in front of the tca but it is really for fine tuning.

I use a double width kit so cant really say about weld on mounts.

Thank you for the quick reply. I think there's something wrong because the edge of my spring is in line with the wing supports.

I don't suppose you have any photos?

I'd say the roll bar is wrong-the proper early mounts will need the proper period rollbar-not an aftermarket one 'based' on a real one-the Rix one would need the corresponding mounts to fix the problem or source an original rollbar-easier said than done as lots of folk say twincam rollbar but they often are not. Trevs stuff is designed to fit original Ford parts. I also have the early weld on brackets-and an apparent twincam rollbar but have yet to try and fit them.

I think it best not to weld anything in until you have driven the car. I believe pulling the struts forward will add more castor/self centering but will make the steering heavier.

You are correct in saying that the TC anti roll bar needs the appropriate mounts to get the right castor. The best way to check it is to get the car on level ground a get a castor gauge on the strut. You can then move the strut back to the desired setting by washers or re welding. It's a bit fiddly but well worth the trouble.

Re: Twincam Anti Roll Bar Issue

Thank you for everyone's input. It appears mexeco is correct.

Trevor from stage1 provided me with some measurements from an original twincam... Mine are in exactly the same position.

He also said I need the Gartrac standard twincam anti roll bar, he has fitted these many times with this setup.

I will update when I get one of these next week! Someone is bound to have the same problem as me in the future.

Thank you for the photos! That's great, exactly the same as mine. I ended up keeping the Rix anti roll bar and trimming the front arch to suit. Steering feels great.

Apologies for the late reply. Only just sorted it out!

Too much castor & you'll need arms like Goliath to steer the car, let alone the lack of positive feel in the steering.

There is a limit as to how far to push the struts forward before it gets very wooly.
    IMO

I will second this statement. It's a fine line between to much caster an just right

not sure why you need to trim the arch unless you have far more castor than me.

Re: Twincam Anti Roll Bar Issue

I have bubble arches on the front with 8J wheels, so the wheels only just caught the front lip on max bump.

Steering doesn't feel too heavy, although the tyres are new so there is a little bit of wax preservative on them still.

A good starting point for Castor is 3 degrees on an Escort.
