2.8i cologne turbo.. where? who? how?

Hey guys, i was looking to potentially turbo my capri, but i'd prefer to stick with the v6. I know and understand turbo's. But i just wondered if anyone did a proper kit for the capri's any more, like Turbo Technics used to.
I've searched the net and come up with nothing, i've looked for second hand setups to try and get one and replace the turbo etc.

Basically, where could i get a kit from? What machining would i need to do? What parts would i need to change/replace?

    Any help appreciated!

    Cheers people

    Hello,

    I am making one.
    There are 2 ways!

    Turbo technics or custom.

I am making it custom. There is a lot of info on my resto thread.

You can also ask if something is unclear.

    Cheers

Re: 2.8i cologne turbo.. where? who? how?

    Yeah, cheers Morcheen.

I basically wanted a bolt together kit like Turbo Technics used to do, they don't seem readily available second hand these days although ebay is reputed to have seen a fair few. I haven't been able to find one yet.

Also, would you have to upgrade fuel pumps and ignition and change any sort of engine management. I've never had a close up look at a turbo cologne v6 so i have no idea how it all fits together.

One the other hand, the other option is to go the custom route, which is a strong possibility but how would you tune it? I understand how a turbo works, but i hate electronics.. would i be better off staying away from a turbo? lol

    cheers

Your turbo setup does look like a Turbo Technics kit, exactly the same manifold as my brothers XR4i TT,got the same piece of tube thats been welded to the turbo snail as well.

Do you guys know if the TT setup was just a bolt on fitment? Should you run low compression pistons with that turbo setup?

Like i say, i know how turbo's work and what they need but I've never actually fitted one

might be easier to drop a 24v in, gives you over 200bhp straight away.

i dont want to go 24v route in fairness. everyone does that. I'd prefer to stick with the cologne, at least service parts and repair parts are cheaper!

Thanks for that page though, at least i know i need to save about £3k for it

I made a cast iron turbo manifold for the 2.9. Might help if you wanted to go that route?

well i've been doing some looking around and asking questions and apparently doing a custom turbo setup isnt too difficult and a fraction of the cost of the TT setup..

So i'm just looking into what turbo to use and getting a manifold fabricated

Re: 2.8i cologne turbo.. where? who? how?

i'm going to custom build a twin turbo setup as well. probably run twin T25's. Cheap enough to buy anyway. Then comes all the interesting fabrication work..

Might be a while yet though. The restoration of the capri is soaking all my money up

I'm using two gt28r (one for ~310hp) turbo's, bought them new, 1440e for a pair (around 1325£). Fabrication work rules, I hate all the rust work with the chassis, thank god is done now

hi all ive been reading throught this forum and im aslo looking to turbo my sierra xr4i, it seems easy enough to make manilfold for turbo, but the biggest problem i can see is the distributor tt made there own or fitted a different module to it ,any ideas what can be done with this, other than buying one from tt at what price i havent found out yet, plus is there anything else special in the tt kit

The only thing "special" about the TT dizzy/module was the advance curve. Nowadays engine management is so cheap so it's usually best to just go programmable ignition and fuelling, That way you can make a 3D advance curve to exactly suit the engine.

    Megasquirt is one way.

You beat me to it Gustaf mentioning the TT dizzy and the alternative. Best direction is EDIS-6 along witha piggy back ignition module. I'm none the wiser with Megasquirt, but is Megasquirt for EFI applications? I'm aiming for Megajolt on my XR4i,as we know that distributors cause spark scatter

Re: 2.8i cologne turbo.. where? who? how?

In my modest opinion the Turbo Technics kit is nothing to write home about, still makes use of one of the quite restrictive exhaust manifolds. And the other manifold, the one which holds the turbo is nothing more than a bottleneck.

I always believed that the large turbine housing A/R .63 for the T3 on the TT kit was to compensate for the restrictions of the manifolds and not to accomodate the exhaust flows of the 2.8 cologne engines. There are many engines of larger displacement that use a quite smaller turbine housing with excellent results.

What's left of my TT kit still lays around and I do not plan to use it for my next Cologne turbo project. Custom turbo headers should help the siamesed ported heads breathe better IMHO.
