    Correct radiator mounting

    Hi guys,

Just need some help mounting a radiator. I want to mount the radiator low. There's enough clearance at the bottom - so that's not going to be a problem. My question is, is the radiator filler going to be too low with respect to the water ways on my Duratec engine.

Here's some pics with the radiator just mocked in place.

where you have it it should be above the highest point of any water way in the head, but probably not by a lot.
if your going with that it may be best to fit an expansion bottle, so you can brim the rad with coolant, and its got room to expand then the draw the coolant back in as it wants, thus you wont need a air space for expansion at the top of the rad

Doesn't look like there is any expansion headroom in that rad at all so NEED's a external expansion tank / bottle?
Could work as is, if you use Evans Waterless Coolant - it doesn't expand.

Thanks for your replies guys. I used Evans in my last project and I really like the stuff - was planning to use it here too.

With waterless coolant there is no expansion and no header tank needed I guess. My main concern, was that the filler on the rad be higher than any internal waterways in the Duratec. I'm not sure if it will be in the location I've mocked it up in.

Also, has anyone got any opinions about rubber isolators at the mounting points?

Height wise its marginal as you say but any head water galleries 'should be' cast at least 3 - 6mm below the cam cover face so maybe ok. I always rubber mount alloy oil coolers but have retained direct normal std mount in my Escort - now you've got me thinking - alloy doesn't like high freq. vibes! But as my car only goes backwards and forwards, in and out of the garage - not much chance of them LOL!

Thanks for that. If I mount it so the filler is in line with the bottom of the cam cover I should be safe.

I never thought of the issue of high frequency vibes when it comes to alloy rads, but its a good point. I was mostly thinking that alloy expands at a different rate to brass or steel as it heats up.

Would have thought so! Slightly oversize mounting holes would allow a bit of room for expansion - I used 8mm holes for M6 screws - penny washers give added support.
